    Sparks & Smoke!

Apple may make some great computers, but their Power Adapters are just plain bad! I have had gone through 2 adapters within 3 years. The first Power Adapter started sparking (by the magnetic base) and had smoke coming from it. I assure you, I take very good care of my charger, making sure to never twist the cord. Mac replaced the first cord, and sent me a second a little over a year ago. Well, while I didn't see any sparks come from this cord, smoke came out the other day, followed by the plastic melting by the magnetic strip. I called Apple, and they can care less. If you buy one of these chargers, please stay by your computer to supervise while charging. It's scary to see how these chargers can be fine one minute, and a fire starter the next!

    Buyer beware

This power adapter is terrible. I have only had it for 3 weeks, and it hasn't really worked from the day I purchased it (for way too much $80). The LED light shows green even though my battery is not fully charged. My battery is at 97%, and I can leave my laptop plugged in for hours and this power adapter doesn't charge my laptop at all, the battery still shows only a 97% charge, and the LED light has been green the entire time. I am going to try to fix my old adapter that worked fine until it broke, if I can't fix the old one I am going to try to find another product to recharge my laptop. I love my laptop but not being able to purchase a reliable power adapter, from what is usually a company with reliable products, is ridiculous, and will make me think twice about purchasing other Apple products.

    Too fragile and expensive

It lasted one year and four months before fraying at the wire near the mag connector. I cut open the wire and mag end and spliced it together because throwing away all the material and spending $80+ on a new power adapter would be ridiculous. Who knows if it's safe to use it this way. It should be designed to last for at least as long as the life of the laptop.

I bought a 60W Magsafe Adaptor to replace an earlier model that died after 18 months use (too soon, I thought). The new, redesigned adaptor lasted four weeks. I replaced that one. The new one did not work OUT OF THE BOX! If this is an example of Apple quality, I will heave a big sigh and go back to PCs. If I cannot rely on my power source to last at least through one trip (or one trip to the store), then I cannot rely on Apple products anymore. Fix your products. Redesign it or find a new Chinese assembly company that actually makes things that work. For $80, you should be able to do much, much better.

This cord is great...for starting fires!

The cord that came with my Macbook has worked just fine for about 2 years (I rarely ever wrapped it up and took it with me anywhere, though), but in the past week the casing has come off the magnetic end of the plug and has stopped working unless arranged in a certain position...and this morning, it started smoking when it was charging my laptop! Thankfully I was there and saw it, otherwise it might have burned my house down! What a highly dangerous product. Apple, you should be ashamed!

    I was hopeful

I thought the design might help to make it a much sturdier product then the adapters before it. Unfortunately, I've run into the same problems that I did before. Today I'll be getting my second of the newly-designed adapters, and it brings my adapter total to 4. I've had my Macbook for a little less than a year and I absolutely love it. But I don't understand why the adapters break down so easily. I don't do anything to it, I don't mistreat it in any way. But the wires just seem to be too easy to yank out. This one needs to remain immaculate. I'll even touch it as little as I have to.

    Improved... seemingly

I am quite pleased with the new adapter and the way it is built. The only reason I gave it only four stars is the fact that I have only owned it for a day. My previous adapter lasted only about a year and four months. This disappoints me as my old PC laptop adapter lasted over two years and only died because a puppy cut the wire with its teeth. I am hoping this new charger will be more like that one.

The reason I switched from PC to Mac was for the improved design over the hinges from my old PC's monitor. I hope to find I have made a good switch and not traded one flaw for another, or my next purchase might be a cheaper laptop with cheaper replacement adapters despite my love of Macs. This, of course, would happen once either the laptop dies or the new adapter (if it does not live up to my standards). That being said, lower the prices. Seriously, new PC adapters only cost me $20, and that was a year and four months ago. I doubt prices increased THAT drastically.

    So-So Product

I've only used this power cord for a few months now so I can't really attest to its endurance or fragility. It's probably the bulkiest power adapter I've ever used. I generally use my laptop at my desk but every once in a while, I do bring it along trips or to another room. This adapter is horrible for travel. The adapter needs its own big pocket to be stored in so I'm not really pleased. MAC/Apple should re-design this product for more convenient use in mind. It's also really expensive for an adapter and for its only so-so quality.

    Works for me.

I've had my Macbook for about 2 1/2 years. The first year with my charger was great, however my dog chewed it up and it eventually stopped working. But even though it was mangled, it still did the job wonderfully and it was a long while before it conked out. So I'm on my second charger and I have no complaints. I like the magnetic feature, it's very convenient... never had my Macbook get pulled with it. Also, the cord, for me, doesn't break easily - and I unwrap it and rewrap it all the time. The price is a little steep, but I can't charge my laptop without it, so it's a necessary purchase. So all in all, I am pretty happy with the charger.

Cord just ripped off in a year!!

It is thoroughly disappointing that the wire breaks off after exactly a year of use. Because of the curling of the cord during travels, a slit formed of its own and now the inner wires have split. I tried in vain to put it back together, but looks like another 79.00 down the drain. Thoroughly aggravating and disappointing they Apple would make such a poorly adaptive product. This came with my silver macbook.

    Charging is Basic

Magsafe is like a car that steers sometimes, but unaccountably just won't other times.

I can't believe that engineering so massively incompetent was allowed to reach the market.

Works great! Love the new design.

Nice I really enjoy it. It does what it needs do to and it does it well. The new design is a lot better sleeker and safer. I find that it comes out with ease without pulling my laptop much. After reading some of the reviews on it some mentioned that it didn't do this as well as the old design I fully and completely disagree with that. It does it well keeps my lappy much safer. I had to test it when i first got it (I always test my products). I am quite satisfied with everything mac! Thanks guys you make a great product!

    Temporary solution...

Same as everyone else, mine failed at 14months. My temporary solution was as follows, though I'll have to shell out at some point:

In my case the gold pins inside the part that connects to the mac had lost their spring. They need to push-in and pop back out, to make contact with the 5 plates on the mac. I sprayed mine with degreaser, to clear some of the grit, then held it by the cord and shook it quickly. The force from shaking it forced the pins to come out. They still don't spring but at least if i put the magsafe on GENTLY it will charge.

    Great concept, bad design

I purchased a 13" macbook at Christmas 2008 and am now purchasing my 2nd power adapter for it. That's 3 adapters(includes one that came with computer) in less than 3 years!! I've been an Apple customer since the beginning and have never seen a product so unreliable as this one. The weak point is the Magsafe connector to cable connection. Both failures have been at this point.
The computer is fantastic, but the charging cable problem really detracts from it. A new design would be great.

all I have to say is I better not be charged!

I purchased the 13in macbook pro THIS MORNING!!!! The power cord was dead by 7:30 p.m. When I go back for a replacement in the morning I had best not be charged for a cord that broke after being HOURS old!!!!

    Power adaptors do not last

Apple needs to rethink the design of the Magsafe power adaptors. I have bought replacement Magsafe Power adaptors in the past because they don't always last. Sometimes 1-2 years but this recent one only lasted 3 months. At $80 per adaptor this is ridiculous. Read online, many consumers have had the same issues.

    An awful awful charger

I have owned this power adapter a month and it has already broken. Word that rhymes with duck you, apple, word that rhymes with duck you. These things are the worst power adapters on the planet. I resent being charged nearly 100 for a new one AFTER A BLOODY MONTH, one month, exactly one month people.

    Not Really Improved

I bought this as a replacement for the original adapter for my 13" Macbook, which shorted out after 13 months of regular use (primarily in house). This design is suppose to be an improvement on the original design (the cord was originally perpendicular to the Macbook instead of flush to the body) and mimics the design of the power adapter that's been used for the Macbook Air since its inception (which I've had for over 2 years and works fine). This cord shorted at the mag tip after 39 days! Do not wrap the cord around the included hooks, but instead coil it loose and secure it with Velcro. Apparently, wrapping the cord on the "designed for storage hooks" is no longer possible with the new power adapters, even though I have adapters from my much older 12" and 15" Powerbooks (2000/2003) that are still working fine and are stored in this manner regularly. This is starting to make me reconsider ever buying another Mac laptop. Having to pay $79 for replacement power adapters twice in less than 18 months is getting to be an expensive owner's tax for having a Mac.

    Very Fragile

I received my first 60W MagSafe Power Adapter with the purchase of my new MacBook. It stopped working less than a year after I bought it. I got sent a replacement as it was still under warranty. The replacement cord, lasted less than six months. I'm now buying my THIRD version of this product. If this continues, my next computer will be a PC.
