    Junk, pure junk.

    • Written by John W. B from Los Angeles

Hey Apple, I love your products, but why can’t you make a power cord that lasts? I’ve had to replace the power cable 3 times, once every 3 years... And, what worse, you don’t offer the computer, magnetic charger end of the 85w MagSafe Power Adapter... It peels at the magnetic end ...

How about a power adapter that lasts longer than a year?

    • Written by Shawna C from Portland

You don't even deserve one star. This is an annual purchase for me and it seems like I am not alone. Apple can do better.

    Concerned and Unhappy

    • Written by Morgan W from Fayetteville

I have 2 MacBooks that need these: A 2011 and a 2012 model. They are currently sharing whatever charger I have that works at the moment because they are constantly melting over many years and many purchases and it just hasn't proved worth it to constantly have 3 (one for each computer and a backup). I've also had one that just stopped working before it ever got the chance to melt (because they always do without fail). It's only a matter of when. The part that is the most likely part to melt, the section of cable right below the connector, is also the only part that isn't removable or replaceable.

With the lack of OS support now for my 2011 and presumably soon my 2012, I am nervous that at some point access to replacement chargers will become a real issue if Apple decides to drop this product with no other working options going forward. Because other than this, my computers work great and I don't see them breaking down or losing functionality any time soon. The only issues I constantly have with them are the chargers, which I have to replace with the frequency of about every 1-2 years (and they WILL NOT last that long without strategic use of some electrical tape EVER).

    Pros:
    - The computers these are made for are the preferred models I own since I can open them up for RAM and hard drive problems with little interruption in my work week and additional costs of service. I did buy a second one and continue to put up with these chargers, which I constantly use and need for work. Otherwise, I would not put up with them at all.
    - The magnetic connector prevents damage to the computers themselves, the most valuable part of these purchases
    - When they do melt, they don't immediately stop functioning.. which buys me some time to patch or replace

    Cons:
    - It's a considerable and ridiculous expense to keep replacing these
    - Will not survive regular use without tape. It just won't. The cables WILL start tearing.
    - Electrical hazard also to your home, pets, and nearby valuables
    - Sometimes they just quit working without getting to the point of tearing
    - These have always been bad products with no improvements in lifespan in the 8 years I have owned them
    - Traveling with these cables further shortens the life of them, which is kind of the point of a laptop. I never unplug the one I use at my home desk. Guaranteed disaster. My travel adapter stays in my bag and is the one I use the least as a rule.

    shocking quality

    • Written by Carly G from Norwich

for such a price and charging an expensive machine, i bought my mac book 2013, the laptop is hardly moved and used on top of a desk most of the time, chargers the same always plugged in same place not really being moved, i am on 4th charger now, they break at the wire laptop wire to box joint, exposing wires, also the box gets so got i worry it will explode or cause a house fire, how can such a company create poor chargers that feel like they will cause a house fire, scared to charge it when not at home

    Needs new engineering design!

    • Written by Geri W from Sugar Land

This is my third power cord. They last about a year before fraying at both ends with ordinary use. I even covered mine with electrical tape when purchased to improve its resilience but it made no difference. It's very frustrating.

I agree with all previous reviews I've seen that rate this product poorly:
Apple, you need to redesign this accessory to match the quality of your other superb products. At minimum the cord needs to swivel at both ends and needs to be made with a better protective covering that does not disintegrate with ordinary heat generated by the electrical current. It may be user friendly with the capability to wrap the cord for easy storage but it's not SAFE for the customer or our laptop devices.

    Rubbish cables, aren't they?

    • Written by Robert G from Minster

As a sound engineer and professional performing musician, I travel a lot with a lot of cables. I have instrument cables and power supplies that have toured all over the UK and Europe with me since 1998. Yes, instrument cables that are more than 20 years old... and in perfect working order.

I have two Magsafe Macbook adapters. One never travels, but just has the connector available to plug the Macbook into on the desk. Never gets pulled, twisted, tangled, trodden on... unlike those cables I mentioned above. I'm on my THIRD home adapter since 2013. The sheathing splits, tears, and finally disintegrates completely. I've tried preserving one a bit longer by using shrink-wrap over the first tiny split. All that did was make it split where the shrink-wrap ends instead.

The travelling adapter is carefully transported in a metal laptop case, loosely coiled in a bag. It will last less than a year before there are multiple splits in the sheathing. Total and utter RUBBISH for a professional product.

There is NO excuse for Apple's adapters and cables being so poor when my other, far cheaper adapters and cables last twenty years. I'm sick of spending £80 over and over again.

    Trash chargers

    • Written by Ryan M from East Grand Rapids

It is absolutely absurd how expensive these chargers are for the quality, mine literally broke sitting still. It is not the quality you would expect out of Apple product much less a 80.00 dollar computer charger. You would be better off buying a knockoff online. Apple needs to fix this.

    Utterly Ridiculous!

    • Written by Kathryn R from Riverview

These chargers are $80 each. I've had my Macbook Pro for three years and gone through FOUR CHARGERS! That's absolutely ridiculous. There are so many bad reviews on these chargers due to their horrid lifespan and extreme price and yet Apple seems to do nothing about it because they do not care. Some of us (a majority) cannot afford to buy chargers like they're candy.

    Third One Now!

    • Written by J G from Cross-in-Hand

Just ordering my third charger now due to failure in the same place, where the lead exits the step down box to go to the computer. The first one lasted five years, not bad. Second one 6 months! And that was with VERY light gentle use. It didn’t have exposed wires like the first, but started to see sparks where it was shorting under the wires insulation. I couldn’t continue to use it after that incase it set the house on fire.
All chargers were authentic Apple chargers.

    Great computers, bad vital accessories!

    Lasted only 2 years

    • Written by Joshua M from Kent

As a dedicated Apple consumer, I am disappointed in the lack of longevity of the power cables. There is no reason for an $80 cable to be broken after 2 years. Both this cable and my lighting to USB cable for charging my iPhone have ripped. Apple, please listen to your loyal customers and make better cables.

APPLE IMPROVE THIS PRODUCT, PLEASE! SERIOUSLY, PLEASE FIX IT!

    • Written by Laura D A from Grain Valley

Yeah, here I go again buying another POS power cord for my MacBook Pro. They say 3rd time's a charm. Apparently not, as this will be number 4. It is ridiculous how poorly made these cables are. It is ridiculous that Apple has not corrected the design flaws that are blatantly obvious. Then again, all one needs to do is read the reviews for this product to see changes need to be made. I baby my power cord because I'd much rather spend my $80 on something else. I'm disabled and bed bound so my laptop goes nowhere, except from my bed to my lap then back to my bed, period. And I make sure the ends never bend. So this time, it freakin frays in the middle of the cord? WTH? I now have a foot long area in the middle of the cord where I've had to use electrical tape because the cord is splitting and fraying. There's no reason my cord should wear out. Did I mention my laptop doesn't go anywhere except from my bed to my lap then back to my bed? Oh, right, I did, I just thought it worth mentioning again. Apple, I'm tired of buying these cords and spending $80 a pop for the whole cord when all I need is from the adapter to the laptop. I really, really do NOT need another wall to adapter section. If I could donate that portion to charity I would, but there's obviously no need, as the market is already flooded. APPLE IMPROVE THIS PRODUCT, PLEASE!

    Rubbish Quality.

    • Written by Loke C from VICTORIA PARK

The charger cable only last for 2½ years before it starts to fray like it's been abused when in actual fact that it's only been on the desk most of its life.

I can literally see it fray itself from NOTHING DONE TO IT.

Support says it "Normal Wear & Tear".

Right. It break downs from being on the desk. I can literally count the number of times that I have actually moved the charger with 1 hand.

$120 for this kind of 'quality'.

    Always falling out!

    • Written by Susan A S from Nome

I typically only bother to write reviews when I feel something deserves 5-stars, but am compelled to write this negative review because this is such a simple design flaw; even more so for a company that prides itself on good design! I appreciate the magnetic end, and I've not experienced any fraying, but the dang thing falls out with just gentle moving around of my laptop on my lap. I just can't believe Apple can't do better. The design for my older Mac Book was far superior. I thought by now, after all these reviews, that surely Apple would be offering an improved way to connect the 85W power cord to the laptop.

    Embarrassing Lifespan

    • Written by Melissa P from Lewisburg

Very sick of these chargers overheating and fraying in the exact same spot. I try my best to take care of them, but the reality is that they are not designed to last for more than 6 months to a year. Since I have to constantly replace the charger, I'm going to buy from a cheaper brand instead of Apple in the future instead. It is not clear to me why Apple hasn't corrected this ubiquitous problem, unless it's truly just to make more money?

    Apple Power Adapter Broken Again!

    • Written by Terrie H from Heath

I am so tired of replacing my MacBook Pro and iPhone power cords. Apple should be ashamed of providing such defective accessories. I refuse to shelve out $80 bucks again. I bought my first Macintosh in 1986 and have been a loyal Apple customer since then. It will be painful, but when this cord finally dies, I will divorce Apple after 32 years. I am done with you!.

Why has this not been improved?

    • Written by Amy S from O'Neill

I just bought my fourth power adapter for my MacBook Pro. The longer I've had my computer, the shorter the life-spans have been for the replacement chargers. This last one only lasted 6 months, if that. The cord frays at the same, super-dangerous spot coming out of the adapter every time. But, at $80 a pop, I have to keep buying them to run my machine.

Cheap Cord; Easily Breaks; Too Expensive

    • Written by Gregory G from Bridgeville

Ridiculously expensive for a product that you will most likely need to replace 2-3 times in the lifespan of your MacBook Pro as I have. The insulating sleeve for the wiring is so weak.
