Yeah, here I go again buying another POS power cord for my MacBook Pro. They say 3rd time's a charm. Apparently not, as this will be number 4. It is ridiculous how poorly made these cables are. It is ridiculous that Apple has not corrected the design flaws that are blatantly obvious. Then again, all one needs to do is read the reviews for this product to see changes need to be made. I baby my power cord because I'd much rather spend my $80 on something else. I'm disabled and bed bound so my laptop goes nowhere, except from my bed to my lap then back to my bed, period. And I make sure the ends never bend. So this time, it freakin frays in the middle of the cord? WTH? I now have a foot long area in the middle of the cord where I've had to use electrical tape because the cord is splitting and fraying. There's no reason my cord should wear out. Did I mention my laptop doesn't go anywhere except from my bed to my lap then back to my bed? Oh, right, I did, I just thought it worth mentioning again. Apple, I'm tired of buying these cords and spending $80 a pop for the whole cord when all I need is from the adapter to the laptop. I really, really do NOT need another wall to adapter section. If I could donate that portion to charity I would, but there's obviously no need, as the market is already flooded. APPLE IMPROVE THIS PRODUCT, PLEASE!

    Here we go again...

    • Written by Miroslav D from Montreal

It does what it needs to do.

But once the cords break… had to buy another. *sigh

Great (not so great job) Apple.

    Rubbish Quality.

    • Written by Loke C from VICTORIA PARK

The charger cable only last for 2½ years before it starts to fray like it's been abused when in actual fact that it's only been on the desk most of its life.

I can literally see it fray itself from NOTHING DONE TO IT.

Support says it "Normal Wear & Tear".

Right. It break downs from being on the desk. I can literally count the number of times that I have actually moved the charger with 1 hand.

$120 for this kind of 'quality'.

    Always falling out!

    • Written by Susan A S from Nome

I typically only bother to write reviews when I feel something deserves 5-stars, but am compelled to write this negative review because this is such a simple design flaw; even more so for a company that prides itself on good design! I appreciate the magnetic end, and I've not experienced any fraying, but the dang thing falls out with just gentle moving around of my laptop on my lap. I just can't believe Apple can't do better. The design for my older Mac Book was far superior. I thought by now, after all these reviews, that surely Apple would be offering an improved way to connect the 85W power cord to the laptop.

    Embarrassing Lifespan

    • Written by Melissa P from Lewisburg

Very sick of these chargers overheating and fraying in the exact same spot. I try my best to take care of them, but the reality is that they are not designed to last for more than 6 months to a year. Since I have to constantly replace the charger, I'm going to buy from a cheaper brand instead of Apple in the future instead. It is not clear to me why Apple hasn't corrected this ubiquitous problem, unless it's truly just to make more money?

    Apple Power Adapter Broken Again!

    • Written by Terrie H from Heath

I am so tired of replacing my MacBook Pro and iPhone power cords. Apple should be ashamed of providing such defective accessories. I refuse to shelve out $80 bucks again. I bought my first Macintosh in 1986 and have been a loyal Apple customer since then. It will be painful, but when this cord finally dies, I will divorce Apple after 32 years. I am done with you!.

Why has this not been improved?

    • Written by Amy S from O'Neill

I just bought my fourth power adapter for my MacBook Pro. The longer I've had my computer, the shorter the life-spans have been for the replacement chargers. This last one only lasted 6 months, if that. The cord frays at the same, super-dangerous spot coming out of the adapter every time. But, at $80 a pop, I have to keep buying them to run my machine.

Cheap Cord; Easily Breaks; Too Expensive

    • Written by Gregory G from Bridgeville

Ridiculously expensive for a product that you will most likely need to replace 2-3 times in the lifespan of your MacBook Pro as I have. The insulating sleeve for the wiring is so weak.

Second one to fail, no matter how well I look after it.

    • Written by Lyndsey Y from Wigan

After 18 months my second charger has split where the thin cable enters the converter. I couldn't have handled it any more carefully than I do, well aware that they might as well be made out of jelly.

The previous one lasted 4 years so it seems they're getting even worse, not better. Come on Apple, look at the reviews on your cables - they're all rubbish. Do something about it!

    Same old story

    • Written by Neil S from London

Absolute disgrace. I've owned one MacBook Pro and really love it, but now had two MagSafe cables fail in exactly the same place - They always break at the end where the cable joins the connector. And £70 for a new one?! It's a total scam really. On the last one I bought I managed to extend the life of the cable a bit more by wrapping insulation tape around the cable. Somehow it STILL seemed to break. I'll be trying the cheaper knock-offs on Amazon now. I can buy three of them for the same price!

I'm about to purchase my 3rd power cord. I ruin NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING..my car is a 1998 BMW Convertible which still is in showroom condition because I keep it that way..I do this with everything I own. This, however is a piece of garbage as many have said it frays at the base of the cord then splits..It's DANGEROUS..wouldn't you rather have us put this money towards new products ? Just my 2 cents

    Ridiculously Frail

    • Written by mark R from Fayetteville

Just bought my FOURTH adapter. Clearly, at $80 it's a recurring stream of revenue for Apple. The only way to ever not break it, is to put it in one place and never move it. So, basically you might as well own a desktop. Between this and the iphone power cords that fray every few months, I'm not interested in ever buying another laptop or phone from Apple.

    Yet another one!

    • Written by Antony G from Iver

I love these supplies so much that I just can’t stop buying them. Lucky for me they only last about 1 year!

I have lost track of how many of these supplies have died on me, the wire always breaks just before the MagSafe connector. My family has 3 MacBooks that use MagSafe 1, and one MacBook that uses MagSafe 2. Maybe Apple should do some sort of special offer, maybe buy two get one free, or get one free after buying five.

My 2011 MacBook Pro is still going strong, but I have spent a fortune on new supplies for it.

Kindly design a new charger for all of us because clearly, everyone is complaining and I am currently buying my 3rd charger. How hard is it to just make a new one?

    Enough, please.

shoddy quality + expensive replacement = Apple cashes-in

    • Written by Robert J from BLACKHEATH

as others have already stated, this adapter is overpriced, poorly made and has a realtively short life span; even when I rarely move my macbook, and hence the adapter, from its regular place of "residence". . .I'll be onto my 3rd adapter as of tomorrow.

    Replacing After 6 Years*

    • Written by Nancy H from Big Lake

Why the *? The first thing I did when I got my second MacBook Pro was tape a 2" piece of plastic straw (that I flared at the flexing end) to both the power supply and magnetic connector ends of the cord. So I've never had that frustrating problem of the cord cracking at both ends. But I think it's time to replace it because, unfortunately, I'm having to tape a number of places in between where the cord has cracked.

So I agree with the critics, Apple please fix the problem or at least lower the replacement price; and owners do yourself a favor and get some extra life out of your power supply by taking this simple, inexpensive preventive action. (I know ... it shouldn't be necessary!).

These Units Have Nothing To Do With 'Innovation' Or The Environment

    • Written by Tamas M from Sydney

These units are so poorly designed and executed that I am forced to buy a new one every year. Completely normal, everyday use, I rarely even travel with my MacBook.

    - The connection to the MacBook simply wears off within 12 months. The plastic shielding itself disintegrates and erodes over time, exposing the cabling at the connector's end of the cable.
    - The connector protrudes too much, so you can't even use your MacBook as a 'laptop'. The protruding connector itself will just pivot upwards and disconnect itself if the MacBook is in your lap/on your thigh/knee.
    - The unit is designed so you can switch the wall connection between direct to the wall, or a longer cable which is great, however the most problematic and prone-to-failure part of the unit is the cable running from the 'power brick' to the MacBook. That cable is permanently attached to the 'power brick', so just because the cable running into the MacBook has given in again, this design forces costumers to buy an entire package of:
    Two connectors
A 'power brick' with an intact cable running into the MacBook.
How are these design solutions 'innovative' or 'environment friendly'?
