Need to spend money on making the cd drive better

    • Written by Sander J from Inver Grove Heights

1st Apple takes away the built in cd drive, and then gives us this as the only option. It NEVER plays dvds or runs discs all the way through and when it acts up, it’s a constant battle to get it to work again. Apple really needs to invest in a way to make this better for its consumers.

    not so universal

    • Written by christopher R from KIRKWOOD

Already paying a premium for the drive and then I have to pay additional $20 to be able to connect it to a new MacBook pro. The U in USB stands for universal and apple made it so their own drive can't connect to their own laptop without buying an adapter!?!?

    Should have read reviews

    • Written by Daniel H from Vancouver

Should be called Apple SuperStupid Drive. Bought SuperStupid not even considering taking a gander at the reviews because, well, its APPLE. Plugged SuperStupid into my very intelligent iMac Pro and voila! Nuttin. SuperStupid sits there and munches on DVDs like it is doing a taste test and eventually spits it out, Thank God cause the iMac keyboard can't figure out what SuperStupid is. Horrid experience, definitely not "plug and play". Please replace your CEO with someone who will fix SuperStupid and some of the other garbage that Apple has recently released.

    Works for me

    • Written by paul B from Tallahassee

I'm an audio snob so I still buy cds. The superdrive has worked for me going on 5 years and has always performed. I've transferred literally 1000s of discs to my hard drive (doing that right now in fact) and never had an issue. I'd give it 5 stars if it had an eject button on the device, but that's not a huge deal. Not sure why so many have rated this thing so poorly.

Works for a While, Then Dies

    • Written by Kyle F from Auburn

As the title indicates, this 'Super' Drive will work through playing a couple of DVDs for yah, but once get it to it's 5th, 6th or 7th go around and it'll finally die on yah.
Mine now it plays a DVD for about 5 mins, then freezes the video and audio, while the undeniable and audible 'clicking' sound makes an appearance to annoy and chuckle at you while you try to eject the DVD... but you continue to fail. After about 5 to 10 mins it'll finally give it up, and an Apple notice will appear and they'll ask 'if something went wrong' and if you would like to 'report' it. Waste of money, and certainly not Apple quality.

I wish they had left these drives in the computers.

    • Written by Laura E from Boalsburg

I have used this drive once or twice effectively, but more often than not I don't have it with me when I need it. Another big problem that I have is that it doesn't play DVDs from other regions. Finally, it's difficult to remove the disc, since although you can unplug it from your computer to cut the power, you can't remove the disc except connecting it to your computer and having your computer eject it. This is a problem when you insert a disc but the computer won't recognize it. Definitely not satisfied for the cost of this device.

    Worst Apple product

    • Written by Mirza N A from Huddersfield

Tried unsuccessfully to use this SuperDrive, it failed to work, even with Apple Support.
When connected via USB to iMac, it fails to be visible on the Desktop. Apple support asked me if it had a separate power supply.
It is sold with the caption it can read and write cds and dvds, which is not possible.
I would not recommend this to anyone. I also tried YouTube instruction videos to get help, but no luck.

This SuperDrive has been a real workhorse for me. I thoroughly recommend !

    • Written by Debbie A from Austin

I've had the SuperDrive since 2015 and read many hundreds of dvds with it. Occasionally a disk gets stuck, but I think it's because of the software using the drive or the occasional bad disk, not the SuperDrive hardware itself. It's very easy to remedy - just unplug it, reboot, then reattach the drive. I do think a manual eject on the drive would be a good design improvement. Anyway, I'm buying a 2nd SuperDrive just in case Apple stops making them in deference to internet download technology.

    So sad

    • Written by Anna Marie R from Ferndale

This really is a lemon. And just when I had old movies transferred to disc and now I can't see them because this darn machine doesn't work and there is no way to eject the disc.

    Terrible product

    • Written by Fred D from Sarasota

I recently bought the apple super drive and used it successfully just once. The next time it would not recognize my DVD and would not eject it. A repair store was able the take the drive apart to retrieve my disk but the drive only made grinding noises when I plugged it in later. I called apple and after half an hour identifying that it was indeed an Apple product, they could only direct me to yet another repair shop. Not worth the effort.

    Super Drive?

    • Written by Roberto B from Altadena

Took back last nite. Drive took 5 minutes to read 5 photos on DVD took only 3 minutes to read 50 photos on my old 2007 iMac drive. Sad that Apple would make something this bad. Took 3 taps on eject key to get disc out. Looks nice.

    What's Up?

    • Written by Marion L S from Louisville

I've had this SuperDrive and have been using it heavily for a long time. It has never missed a lick. It is great. I couldn't be happier with it. It's a workhorse and totally dependable. I'm not sure how to account for all the bad experiences that others have had with this model of drive, but I have had a purely positive experience using it. I can only relate my own experience, which has been purely positive.

Ate My Dvd and Won't Return It!

    • Written by William H from Crete

Inserted a DVD-RW disc into Superdrive. Device not recognized by Disk Utility. Can't eject since it's not recognized. Twenty minutes on phone with Apple Care, no luck after many SWAG's. Finally he tells me 'it only reads discs, can't burn them'. He didn't read the Apple website selling the device. Now a trip to the 'Genius Store' where they will rip it open and take out the disc and hopefully tell me what will work in the device.

Don't buy unless they prove it works at the 'Genius Store'

    Apple SuperDrive

    • Written by Brian U from El Dorado Hills

I was a little leery after all the negative reviews but found the drive performed well. An eject button should be added to rate it five stars. The drive did fail to eject discs when the keyboard command was used on several occasions, but the HELP instructions to restart and hold the mouse button down always ejected the disc during startup.Apple should work on getting the EJECT function to work on command.

    Slow and unreliable

    • Written by Robert P from Penrith

I've had this for a couple of years, and I have several occasions where it wouldn't read the whole of an audio CD. The local Apple store tried other ones from stock with the same result, yet the CDs read fine on my 14 year old Apacer Disk Steno. It is also disappointingly slow. Expensive, waste of money.

    Not the best

    • Written by Robert V from Curdworth

I expect Apple to be the best. I bought this product 3 years ago and now conclude that there are much better options. It looks like an Apple product - smart and sleek - but it doesn't work to my expectations. It is very sensitive to the slightest mark on a disc. It refuses to download - and hangs so that the only way to eject is to switch off and restart the drive. It also does the same on play. No amount of cleaning makes any difference. These same discs play well on my other independent equipment (Hifi,DVD/BluRay) drives. When it does work it is ok. Note that it also doesn't do BluRay video.

    Super pleased!

Brought this yesterday, already had the adapter necessary to link up to USB-C. No problems, uploaded 25 CDs straight to iTunes. Okay, expensive I suppose but if it works, I don't mind!
