    This SuperDrive works great!

    • Written by Bradford P from Espanola

I received shipment of my driver a week ago. After a simple plug and play I was ready to go. First off I had quite a backlog of CDs to transfer to iTunes. The first minor glitch was the method of ejection, which is not on the drive. A quick search of online manuals solved that quandary. A simple tap on the f12 key releases the CD smoothly and silently. I've already, in three days, imported over 75 discs without a single hang up. Mind you, these discs were in every quality grade imaginable. The small size of the drive is appreciated and being able to burn as well as import makes its versatility a real plus. I know that I could have bought a less expensive drive but I trust the Apple brand and I love the way it looks with my Mac mini in their brushed steel cases. Definitely a five star purchase.

    BURNED OLD CD'S FLAWLESSLY

    • Written by John G from hartwell

I almost didn't buy this because of the negative reviews. I specifically wanted to use it to burn my old music cd's into my iTunes library. I have my old original Metallica, Motley Crue, Van Halen etc. cd's from my late 80's metal days and figured it might be problematic but everyone of them burned flawlessly! If that's along the lines of your intended use GO FOR IT! AWESOME DRIVE!

    Happy with the Superdrive.

    • Written by Theodore O from West Winfield

First off I wasn't happy that the new iMac didn't come with a built in CD/DVD player. Secondly, after reading the reviews I was frankly stunned that they were so negative. I called my go to guy at the Apple Store and asked his opinion about the Superdrive. He said that he'd never had any problems and was surprised that the reviews were negative. So, I ordered one. Out of the box it has functioned as it should. I've had no issues with speed, hanging up, ejecting the discs or copying files. Still not happy about having to tie up a USB port, but it works smoothly and recommend it. I wonder how many people who wrote the negative reviews bought their versions somewhere other than an Apple Store.

I'm not sure why there's a lot of bad reviews on this product, but I've had mine for almost 4 years and it works like a dream. I haven't had any problems with this device and it's worth the money.

Had mine for around 18mo, no problems.

    • Written by John B from WHITTIER

Works fine, no issues with reading/burning DVDs on my 15" MBP Retina. It definitely doesn't work well with cheap DVD blank media, has to use B-grade or higher. Can't use it with a hub, must be plugged in directly. Overall, a solid little box that does its job. Low review ratings are confusing as it's rated well elsewhere online.

    Impressed

    • Written by Donna K from Phoenix

Was worried after reading the reviews but over the last 2 days I've watched a movie, downloaded 6 photo back-up cds and imported about 45 music cds with not a single issue. Complaints about no eject button is easily accomplished using the eject button on my keyboard or the onscreen eject. I am happy!

    Works As It Should

    • Written by Larry T D from Lake Wales

I was reluctant to purchase this drive after all the bad reviews, however I'm happy to have ignored them. Had it for three months or so and it operates perfectly. I've burned both CDs and DVDs flawlessly..never a problem. I do admit to using name brand disks..never bothered with the discount stuff. Also never experienced an ejection problems as so many complained. I use the keyboard ejection key as well as 'command e'. Also I've dragged the desktop disk image to 'trash'. Neither method has ever failed..not once. No problems and if forced to have a USB drive sitting on my desk, I want it to at least match my equipment...this one looks great as do most Apple products. Oh yeah..playing prerecorded disk, movies, etc. is also perfect.

    It works for me!

    • Written by Sheila K from Saint Maries

In spite of some of the bad reviews, I wanted to give the Super Drive a try. I received it on a Monday afternoon and by Thursday afternoon I had successfully ripped 201 CD's. The ONLY issue I had was that it balked at trying to eject a CD with a paper label on it. I was wary of ripping it in the first place, but it worked. I would not use labeled discs in it in the future. I am thrilled that I was able to rip my whole collection so quickly and easily. I have also been able to burn CD's with no problems. I hope it continues to work as well for me.

    Works great!

I recently replaced my 2010 MacBook Pro with a 2018 MacBook Air. I've used my Apple USB SuperDrive to burn CDs and to import CDs into iTunes & it's been working great, at least as well as the built in CD drive in the Pro. I don't understand all the bad reviews; it works great for me.

    No problems here

    • Written by Teresa T from Quincy

I purchased the Apple USB SuperDrive despite the less than enthusiastic endorsement of some users.

To date, I've experienced no problems with it whatsoever while playing movies (which is my main purpose for buying it). Quite literally, plug and play without drama or poor performance. Recommend if you need for play back. For more advanced usage, read other reviews to get a better idea.

Reads and writes CD and DVD

    • Written by Wise Y from New York

I used the USB Superdrive on my MacBook Pro 2014 and on my MacBook Pro 2016 using a USB C to A converter. It works fine. If you want to read CD's or DVD that were written to by other computers or you want to burn either CD or DVD's, this device will do it. You have to be patient because it doesn't read or write quickly. On the other hand, it is very reliable and hardy. I had another one that I used for many years but misplaced it and therefore had to buy this one to replace it. You can play commercial CD's and DVD's but be careful because some CD or DVD from a different regions of the world will not play on your computer and, although you can shift regions, you can only do it a few times. I have used it to read my music CD's into iTunes and played movies from DVD.

Preforms exactly as it is meant to

    • Written by Sadie S from Middletown

My father bought this superdrive over 3 years ago when he bought a mac air. It has been used many times since then and still works as if it were brand new. I use it to watch DVDs and it works like a charm. It is fast and the small size makes it easy to use on the go. I am hoping to purchase two soon- one for me and one for my sister- due to the exceptional quality. Unlike many reviews, my experience has been awesome. There have been no problems such as the disks getting stuck, loud noises, lack of functioning, or anything else of the sort. I highly recommend this product, especially to students!

    Excellent Drive

    • Written by Bryce F from Elgin

I went for this drive because it matches the aesthetics of my other apple products. I've had it for about 4 years and have only had one problem, admittedly it was probably my fault for putting a disk in there that was in less than stellar shape. Overall flawless AND pretty. I've imported over 100cds with this thing and it's still going. I only wish it was a bit faster.

    Good product, minor (ejection) flaw

    • Written by Marton C from Huntington Beach

The Apple USB SuperDrive works as intended. It can read all kinds of CDs, DVDs, DVD movies etc. It also acts as a CD/DVD burner. After months of using one, I finally can give this review. It works well enough, but has one minor flaw. It seems that certain CD discs have a hard time being "ejected" by the drive. It may possibly depend on the brand of disc media being used, I think. My theory is that the mechanical power of the drive might not be strong enough to force CD discs out all the time. This makes sense since this SuperDrive is just powered by the tiny USB cabled power coming from your Mac. The drive itself does NOT have any internal power supply.

The workaround is simple. Just use gravity, pick up your SuperDrive and tilt the front end (the one with the slot) facing 45 degrees downward, and then try ejecting the disc. With the help of gravity, you are helping the drive to "spit out" the disk. Just make sure your ejected disc doesn't go falling down onto the floor.

Maybe a future firmware can be issued to help with this problem? Anyways, that's the only thing close to a "flaw" on this external drive. Otherwise it works as it was intended.

    Exactly What My Mac Needed

    • Written by Ross C from Woodland Hills

Apple is not shy about charging exorbitant prices for some accessories. Having paid $30 for many cables, adapters etc., $79 seems like an absolute bargain for a sleek drive like this. It plugs in, does what it's supposed to do and has the expected Apple fit and finish. I'm skeptical of reviews that say it worked for a day then quit, yada yada... I've had more Apple devices than I can count and anything like that is a rare exception that is always easily remedied and often either user error or a system conflict of some kind.

    Great Drive

    • Written by Gary S from Slinger

i was hesitant to purchase this storage drive based on some of the reviews I read online. But i did go ahead and purchase this about a week ago, and so far I am very pleased with the performance of this drive. I've burned a CD, reviewed some old CDs I had in my files and installed the 2016 Turbo Tax software. Everything worked well. I will caution you that the User Guide provided doesn't provide much information, but the online prompts given by the drive work well. I would definitely purchase this drive again and recommend ito my friends and family.

    Perfect!

    • Written by Anneke V from Petaluma

I purchased it at the online Apple Store and it was delivered in one day. Free shipping. The packaging was great. The box was encased in a layer of foam. I plugged it into my MacBook Pro Retina 2015 and the DVD automatically mounted. It's a tad noisy but I stopped hearing the hum. It all just worked.

I was going to buy it on Amazon for $2 less, then I read an Amazon review stating that the drives sold on Amazon weren't genuine Apple SuperDrives, so I went back to Apple.com.

I was able to get all my pre-sales questions answered by chatting with Apple. That interface too was very Apple-like. Simple, nice to look at and easy to use.

I'm glad I spent the extra bucks to get a genuine Apple product and encourage you to do so if you have a new SSD Macbook.
