A bit disappointed in the performance.

I purchased one of these to replace an AirPort Express when I moved into a larger apartment, as the Express was only 802.11n and was having some trouble reaching the back bedrooms. In the 2 & 1/2 years I owned the Express I never once had an issue or had to do a thing to it. I can't say the same about the Time Capsule. I keep running into issues where my devices show full Wi-Fi signal strength but webpages or whatever won't load. Once I restart the Time Capsule the issue fixes itself for a few days but then it re-appears and I have to restart again.

In addition, the range isn't what I expected. My place is only about 1100 square feet but I'm still having trouble getting a good signal in areas furthest from the router. This may be due to the construction of my building (I'm on the 30th floor of a high-rise, so it's all steel and concrete), but like I said, my place isn't that large.

As far as the time machine backup portion goes, that seems to work okay. I have not had any issues.

Did I really just buy a $300 router?

To the best of my knowledge this device has literally NO way to access the hard drive. For anyone who, you know, actually wanted to use any of the 2TB hard drive. No way to back up my iPhone, Or iPad. Apple, you have to be kidding me? The only thing this product does is work with time machine to back up my macbook. Which is nice, but I can do that with a much less expensive external hard drive, that actually functions as an external hard drive. I didn't even investigate beforehand to see if these things were possible, because I thought it was just common sense. So disappointed in this product.

Great Router - Range is terrific

Our home is about 4K sq ft...perfect range throughout!!! This even gives a nice signal around the perimeter of our home! Very impressed.

    Not functional

As a router it is very good. As a storage device - backup for laptops, mac mini, etc. good. Not good for backups of mobile devices. Mobile devices only sync to iTunes on laptop or Mac. Process of creating shortcuts or extensions to a location on the network on the Timecapsule is futile since the links go bad and are later unrecognized. Constantly corrupts those backup files for mobile devices - iPad and iPhone. Home sharing music from here is ridiculous process: laptop must be on somewhere in the home synced to this music library. Only then can Apple TV find the music library in my computers. It can't just find the library as the Timecapsule can't complete the function of home sharing the library itself. Previous mac minis could be converted to TimeCapsules....think Apple should consider merging/consolidating the time capsule/router/apple TV all into one device with better gaming function. iTunes should sync to this again when back on your "homenetwork" on all devices. It should allow for the personal home cloud and their apple cloud to work seamlessly.

Believe earlier reviews - the hard disk can die quickly

Less than 2 years old, hard disk dead. Many others have the same problem. Bad apple this one. Router good but don't waste your money for storage/back up.

Airport Time Capsule, and Extreme-Set-Up Is Just Too Easy

I've been sitting on an Airport Extreme for half a year not wanting to update all the devices on our system. (9-Apple TV units, 1 smart TV, 7 Airport Express units driving speakers & printers, and 4 Nest CO & Smoke detectors, and one nest Thermostat).....

Decided to plug in the Tall extreme and do it tonight...

Guess what? Set-up was only one step....

    1) Plug it in, and Airport Utility asked, "Do you want to replace Airport Extreme (flat) with Airport Extreme (tall).." ...... I typed "yes", and in about 3 minutes it said.... Connect cables from Air port Extreme (flat) to Airport Extreme (tall) and showed me a picture of both units onscreen...... and it said.... "transferring settings"...........

I made the ethernet cable switch from the old extreme to the new extreme, , and I didn't have to touch another device on my network..... Easy, easy, easy........ And while my Airport Extreme (flat) would often drop devices off the network, and I had to reboot them.... The new (tall) Airport Extreme handles them all, and I am back to running sound to all the speakers in the house that are connected to Airport Express (current generation) units...

    Wow... too easy!

    Awful

This is the first apple product I have ever bought that doesn't cooperate with all of my other apple products. If iPhone and iPad backup can be made on iCloud, how come it is unavailable on Time Capsule?!?! Why can I not save my most important data like documents, photos, movies on time capsule HDD and share them with my other devices? Why there are so many limited options for this product?

To sum up: high price for a pretty product with poor and limited possibilities. I cannot understand why they don't implement simple software to their own products.

Apple please make apple great again and start doing software right.

    Saved my bacon (twice)

Has to be said, these Time Capsules are invaluable when all else fails. Although 99.9% of the time, your mac book will be stable and problem free, when a Macbook dies it dies hard. For example, just spent the last 22 hours restoring a full backup (which was taken automatically earlier the same morning), after my Macbook Pro failed to restart after installing the Sierra update and booted into command line. Without the Time Capsule I would be heartbroken right now.
This is the second time the TimeCapsule has saved my life. My first Macbook Pro was STOLEN! Another situation when your TimeCapsule will save your life too. JUST MAKE SURE YOU HAVE BACKUPS BEFORE DOING UPDATES, AND A SPARE DAY TO RESTORE IT !

    Nothing compares

I have tried many wireless routers and nothing compares to the time capsule. Amazingly easy setup, outstanding reliability, and if that isn't enough it also backs up you're Mac automatically everyday. Is it a little pricey? Yes. I'd pay double the price to not deal with the headache of other routers that have to be unplugged and reset constantly. Another amazing product by Apple!!!!

    Wouldn't recommend

Love Apple, love Apple products. I've been using them professionally and personally pretty much my whole life. I believe that I haven't felt the level of frustration and disappointment with another single product, not only with Apple, but with much of the technology I use. The AirPort Time Capsule has failed on many different levels and now the hard drive has died. The throughput on it has pretty much killed my fast Internet connection. Now, I've wasted many hours troubleshooting a failed hard drive . . . hard drives fail . . . it happens. But, it seems to have happened to so many people, I have to question Apple's choice of hardware they put inside it. We pay a premium to buy Apple product, we expect more. Not only has it failed, it's virtually impossible to get to the drive to replace it. It's slowly becoming a $300 paperweight . . . steer clear of this one. Apple, shame on you!

    Terrrible

Fails to work with my existing cable modem, purchased it last year to automatically back up my iMac computer, sadly it needs to go. Total waste of money and investment. Why can't Apple make it right w these airport time capsules is beyond me but its sad to have loyal customer be constantly disastified with their products, especially rubbish like this

    Pretty terrible

If you like products that fail a lot due to development negligence, this purchase is for you. Geniuses at the Apple store are extremely far from their label. One asked why I would try to use an old Mac Mini as a Time Capsule. Geniuses these days are glorified hipsters getting through school and born again coffee connoisseurs... but all of this is besides the point. Please don't purchase this product if the majority of your intent is to store data. You will lose it. Twice I have lost it. And twice, the geniuses have had no solution and STILL try to sell me a $2000 metal computer in place of a Time Capsule. I'm moving on to Seagate. Stick to desktop computers, Apple.

Can't connect - extend existing network

Wanted this to store my music to access wirelessly, but it won't join my existing network, forces you to create a new network. I don't need a new network.

    Eh?

I have mixed emotions about this. It does my backups just fine but as a WiFi router my old sysco router runs circles around this. Since I've hooked this up streaming movies on my TV from other apps it won't show them in HD due to bandwidth. Either that or it just buffers constantly. I never had these issues with my old router. I guess if it isn't broke. Don't try and fix it. I wanted to love this but it frustrates me in times where I really want it to work.

    Beware of disk failures

this is my 2nd TC device. Each has failed in the first two years. The disk died on my present device after 1 year. I have one of almost every apple product which mostly work well. But I think this device seems to be flawed. And of course working with apple stores to get it replaced is a real pain. I would recommended a NAS or OS X server solution instead.

Maybe i've expected too high for this product from Apple

I'm kind of Apple fan boy, happy with all of its products I've used so far expect this TC.
Primary reason I decided to buy TC is to back-up my data: especially photos for which I traveled and spent a lot of time as it's my hobby.

Unexpectedly, my TC worked for just over a year, then, began making a loud noise and overheat. Finally stop working expect still making the loud buzzing noise.I did not purchase Apple Care as I believed that kind of product was designed for long term usage and for sure not to be abused. it just sits on a desk and does its thing. This product should last longer than a year especially for more than 300 sgd.

However, I still don't mind, went to service center, check the status. I won't still mind giving like 50% of brand new price to get it fixed (without losing my important data). Guess what, service center just replied in polite manner that they can't do anything expect exchanging the device (1 for 1) at almost 90% of brand new price. Frankly, I'll still pay for this price if they can recover all my data and exchange new one. Suggested that I can go for 3rd party service center. Normally I choose apple, pay for higher price as I don't want to get frustrated by these 3rd parties, well...well...

Now, it seems like I don't have any option other than to showcase this TC on my desk as a decoration. Definitely, not worth the money and worst APPLE is not reliable for this product, Apple doesn't take any responsibility for this product literally. You're set on your own.

Best wireless router/storage device I've used to date, highly recommend!

I have been through quite a bit of wireless routers over the years from D-Link, Netgear, Linksys, Cisco. These routers would work for some time but then would eventually start failing and required reboots fairly often. I moved from a two story home to a three story home and wanted adequate wireless coverage. Immediately after moving to my new home, the wireless issues started. After quite a bit of frustration, I decided to try the Time Capsule since I use quite a bit of Apple devices. I set this unit up over a year ago and have not had to do much with it since. I have rebooted it only recently for a firmware update. This unit is a work horse and maintains wireless coverage and connectivity throughout my home without issue. Having the ability to manage the Time Capsule from my iPhone, iPad and other Apple devices is a very nice feature. The Time Machine backup feature has been used on many occasions to restore an entire system back to a new Mac device. Having peace of mind knowing that your systems are always backed up and can be restored with a click of a button is just priceless. It is basically a set it and forget it type of system. You set up your wireless network, set the Time Machine options on your Mac devices and you're done. My only regret is not having this unit sooner. Frustration and hassle could have been averted many years prior.

    not to recommend

After 2 years my TC 2TB stopped to boot/work. Seems that the HD got some problems so the wifi part will also stop to work. Apple takes a huge amount of money for repair and I have the feeling this product is not made for 24/7 use.
Buy a "normal" airport and use standard backup solutions. I still see a point using airport as a router especially if you want to extend your network, but the use of time capsule is just wasted money.
    // a very disappointed user
