2.4 GHz slows speed down at a very inconsistently

It took me a while to finally review this product because I wanted to fully troubleshoot it and I liked the network accessible disk storage for my Mac and backup feature. In the end, when I think about it, it’s not worth the price tag.
Basically like the title says, if your devices connect using the 2.4 GHz frequency, you’ll notice your internet speed going up and down not even close to your speed if you connect directly to your ISP’s equipment. We’re talking close to 0.9 mbps... this has been observed with multiple modems now. One way to go around it is to separate the 5Ghz frequency and connect to that. The limitation to this is that 5ghz is very short range. I tried to look online when I first got this device and couldn’t find anything if anyone else has had this issue. Until last night. Look up an Apple discussion thread number 8427625. They tried to troubleshoot this deeper to no avail. Now I’m convinced this is a product issue.

    Good Stuff

Plugged the provider’s modem into the unit via Ethernet cable. The wifi signal is strong enough throughout the entire home. I have 3 external disks that are shared by the family for backups. Was installed in 2013 and it has worked flawlessly since.

Amber light all the time and fan whining

After 18 months, the box is stuck on Amber light and the fan whines all the time. It is provided poor and unreliable wifi. I had an older airport from 2002, it still works. Shame the newer product is substandard.

I can't fault this product in anyway. I have had this product for years and it's amazingly reliable with good strength Wifi throughout multiple large houses. If you are in the Apple ecology, you'd be wrong not to buy.

    Better than other Wi-Fi Routers

This Apple AirPort Extreme is a Smart Wi-Fi Router which is better than other Wi-Fi Routers by brand name is ASUS, D-Link, Linksys, NETGEAR, TP-Link, and other Internet Technology Systems....

However, the other Wi-Fi Routers are not as good as this Apple AirPort Extreme due to defective; dropped Wi-Fi Signal; slowed speed internet; Wi-Fi Range too far into Very Large Home Size; and not working properly that I read their product reviews into Other Shopping Online Websites like Best Buy, Costco Wholesale, Fry's Electronics, etc. and their product reviews were written by other people whose they were NOT happy about their other Wi-Fi Routers could dropped Wi-Fi Signal....

Sorry for that inconvenience about other Wi-Fi Routers have a lot of problems!

Probably the Wi-Fi Range of this Apple AirPort Extreme is about AC2600 (Wi-Fi Speed) for Very Large Home Size; just compared to NETGEAR Wi-Fi Routers instead of Wi-Fi Cable Modem Routers...

I have been dealing inconstant wireless speeds throughout the house with my Comcast supplied router recently. I read the reviews on the apiroort extreme and figured I had nothing to loose trying it out being that all the items in the house are Apple products. It has only been a few days and I am so impressed on how it has solved my slow wireless speed that I wanted to share this positive review. Not only has it improved my wireless speed by
It was so simple to set-up from the IPad - just amazing!

Constantly drops the signal. Requires a reboot every 2-3days.
Very disappointing everything else in the house is Apple and works fine.
This isn't worth the time to throw it in the trash.

Best Wi-Fi Router I've ever owned

So sorry to hear that Apple is discontinuing the Airport Extreme. I've had the current model since 2014 and have had excellent coverage and speed. It just works...and works well! Please Apple, reconsider refreshing the line...I know you could do wonders with a Mesh product!

    Best router

I’m going on 3 yrs. no issues at all. Love it. I’m surprised with the negative comments. I’ve read the negative and positive comments before buying it, and I decided to take that chance. And I’m glad I did. Not disappointed at all, not one issue. Working flawlessly.

    Beautiful, Expensive and Fragile

I love the Apple ecosystem and am a fan. However in all honesty, I have found Apple products beautiful but fragile having gone through 2 Airport Extreme routers, 4 Airpot Express Base Stations and I am now on my third MacBook Pro. If I was convinced that the Apple software infrastructure (Unix - based) was superior, I'd throw up my arms in desperation (I hate Windows). Not one router/base station has lasted more than two years. I am now seriously considering moving away from Apple routers and base stations. Apple needs to get a grip! Their products can't be expensive and unreliable!

    Do not buy! Poor quality.

After 2 years, my Airport Extreme started to fail. I purchased a new one and that was dead out of the box. I exchange it for another one and that one failed after 3 months. I highly recommend Netgear’s Orbi router system. The WiFi signal and strength is amazing and way better than the AirPort Extreme. Also, Apple is officially exiting the wireless router business and selling off its remaining inventory of Airport products.

I can’t believe it still works!

I have literally had my AirPort Extreme for about 10 years! I stream run Xbox one online shooter gaming, no problem. 10 years later .1 router. 10 years. I run XB1, 3 phones, 2 tablets, one laptop. Oh yeah and my neighbors apartment too! Like all their phones, smart tv .... 2 apartments with a 10 year old router. Honestly if it’s true I understand why Apple might not do networking hardware. They are too good at it. The product life cycle is so long it is not good for them. What’s the longest you’ve had a phone or a mobile device last? I’m gonna say, no where near this router. Apple products are always worth the price. I had an iMac go for 7 years. It still works but runs too slow, but like the router it’s 10 years old!

10 stars and a 'save the airport extreme' appeal

Have owned several routers, but the Airport Extreme shines bright. Highly reliable and never had an issue with my 2 units ever. Recently came to know that this line is being killed. Can anyone at Apple explain clearly why networking is not important anymore? Apple- you are loosing control of the end user experience- to speak nothing about privacy issues. I understand if there is a replacement line or an upgrade but this move stinks of profitability concerns. If that is the case there are a dozen accessories in the store that can go away to make room for airport. Do you guys lack the technical chops to build a next gen router?- thats hard to imagine - there are so many challenges in networking still left to tackle for home and business.

Love this Router! Near flawless performance and reliability

I have had my AirPort Extreme for almost 4 years. Very happy with it.
I am sad that Apple will stop selling this product, and updates
will be limited if not ending. :(

    Great Product, Hope for Upgrade

Many of the one-star reviews are confusing to me because I've had my time capsule and airport extreme for years without having any issues. I bought the airport time capsule when it first came out--never had a single issue of dropped connection or failed hard drive, and still don't. I even have the newer airport extreme now because I've moved into a bigger place--the coverage has improved with a consistency in reliability. Perhaps those who have written bad reviews failed to update their firmware or use the airport utility to configure their devices? I don't know, but these work well and I hope apple upgrades them to compete with newer technology.

    Awesome and Easy

Been using our first for over 7 years. Got a second 2.5 years ago to expand network to a roaming network. We've had full coverage (upstairs, downstairs, and basement) without a speed issue since.Only time they haven't worked flawlessly is because I didn't notice that they needed a firmware update. And even then they were working fine, just not great. Easy to set up, configure, and control ... REALLY easy. Wouldn't get anything else.

    Useless product. Save your cash

This product is the worst purchase I have made from Apple. It drops out, over heats and makes loud noises. Your better to invest your hard earned cash into a real router and not this piece of junk
