Perfect, it does what I need it to do

The Smart Keyboard is typical Apple quality, which is very high in my personal opinion. It did take me a day or so to get used to the keyboard layout, which not differing too much from a regular keyboard on a Mac - it does feel just a bit smaller. However, after a day or so, I found that I could pretty easily switch between a Mac and the iPad keyboard without having to think about it too much. I've always loved the smart case - I think it has always been true innovation on Apple's part, dating way back to the first iPad. It's pretty awesome to take a small cover and turn it into a keyboard/stand.

My only complaint is that it adds just a little bit too much weight to the iPad. I did expect the weight to be a little bit better, and closer to the weight of the iPad itself. I find myself sometimes taking the Smart Keyboard off when I go mobile, just so I don't have to deal with it's bulky/weight when I want to use the iPad in the traditional fashion (touch-based, etc).

Nice product overall but does not lay flat

I have had the product for a week, and I find that it connects easily and the keyboard is pretty comfortable for typing in what would normally be awkward situations (like sitting with the pro on my lap on an airplane.) Killer fault for me is that the key board does not lay flat on a flat surface. Seems like the weight of the pro, or some overlap in the panels, keeps the front-facing edge of the panel slightly elevated from a table top. This makes things just awkward enough to be annoying. The folks at the store opened two boxes for me, but both had the same issue. Points for the Apple folks who are clearly willing to make it right if they need to, they told me to bring it back if it doesn't break in on its own and they'll swap it out again. So, I'm trying to "train" it to set properly, but if this keeps up for another week I'll be looking for another solution.

    Loving It

This is just what I needed. I don't think I can go back to a keyboard-less life.

    - Works well
    - Easy to remove when I don't need it
    - Useful inclusion of keyboard shortcuts
    - Rather lightweight. Especially in comparison to other keyboards such as the Logitech Create

    Small but it works well

It took me a few minutes to get used to the small keyboard for the 9.7 version., but that was it. It worked fine after that and this short review is being written on the keyboard. For me its about ten times faster than using the screen keyboard and of course it doesn't use up screen space so you can see more text etc on the screen while using it. The arrow keys are also welcome, and makes editing easier than with touch.

The set up is fast, it took a minute or so for the iPad to recognize the keyboard when I first plugged it in, and the space bar is just a bit firm, but it all works fine, even with my fairly large hands. It should be useful on airplanes with tiny trays to work from, better than a surface pro for that purpose and many others. If only it included a nice way to hold the pen!

Smart keyboard not a smart purchase

First of all, I'm not even typing this review on the keyboard because it is not much fun to type on. The keys are too small and too close together and it is far too easy for your fingers to hit the wrong keys. I am a much better typist using the on-screen keyboard than I am with the Apple board. Granted, I have only had the keyboard a couple of weeks, so perhaps I will eventually get used to the key spacing. But the most glaring, and in my opinion, unforgivable problem with this keyboard is the lack of any way to enable dictation while the board is attached to the iPad. This is what I would call an incredibly terrible oversight and completely unlike what I have come to expect from Apple. To spend the kind of money they're asking for this keyboard, and then to lose the ability to dictate, is unbelievable. It's like no one at Apple seems to sweat the details anymore, once Steve Jobs passed away. It just seems like everything is "good enough" and no extra effort seems to go into making things Insanely great anymore. This keyboard is a perfect example of this attitude—a mediocre product that doesn't live up to the level of excellence we used to expect from Apple. If I were to have the opportunity to do this all over again, I would have never purchased this keyboard and I don't recommend it to anyone else, at least until they fix the glaring lack of a way to enable dictation.

    Not well made.

While I like backlit keys, etc. that come with after market keyboards, I love having an apple product made for my iPad Pro. I find it works very well with an occasional glitch. However, I have had it for less than a year, and it is fraying on the edges and the borrow corner of the keyboard is ripping apart. So now I need to wonder if I should replace with the same thing, or buy something after market.

    Difficult to use.

Ver unhappy with this product. It offers no protection for the iPad. It is difficult to attach the iPad and it falls out when you try to open and reposition,

Functionallly a great product with poor quality and execution.

This is a product that I use on a daily basis (I'm writing this review with the keyboard) and the keys and simplicity of use are great. It is easy and comfortable to type documents and long emails and anything else of length where the touchscreen keyboard becomes an annoyance. The keyboard along with the Apple Pencil (which I also use daily) were the reasons that I purchased an iPad Pro.

HOWEVER, within a few weeks of getting the keyboard, the plastic started to fray and come apart. The Apple Store replaced it for me, but didn't really want to. Now, I am about 10 months in on the 2nd keyboard and the plastic is fraying again. At $150 for an accessory to an already expensive iPad I would have expected an apple product to hold up much better. The keyboard still works, but it looks terrible and I use it in a professional environment and don't like the sloppy look. So far it still works, but I wonder for how long given the shape its in. Also, while the keyboard attaches by magnet it seems the magnetic connection is weakening too.

So, in conclusion I love the usefulness of the product, but am very disappointed by the poor quality and the likelihood that I will have to replace it soon. Given my strong view that this should have held up better and lasted longer I don't know if I will get another one when this one fails or just looks too tattered to use at work. So much for a laptop replacement......

    No Longer works

I bought my Smart Keyboard with the iPad Pro 9.7 one year ago. It's now buggy, works only some of the time and frequently get 'this device is not support' messages. Unfortunately, there is no warranty or fix. I use my iPad as a laptop replacement for work. I popped the Logitech keyboard on and BAM, works like a charm. I prefer the Smart Keyboard because it's light weight, acts as a cover and is easy to type on, but it's not very Smart.

Build quality Edges/Seams Split Or Frayed.

I don't usually bother to write reviews for products, but my disappointing experience with the 9.7in iPad Pro Smart Keyboard has prompted me to write something.

My main gripe is with the seams along the edge of the keyboard, and I'm surprised that other reviewers have not picked up on this. It can't be just me, can it?

Basically, when I hold the iPad by its sides in the landscape position with the Smart Keyboard folded behind, (I presume this is an "authorized" folding position!), the edge or seam of the keyboard has split, dented and frayed. Presumably due to the side pressure from holding the keyboard.

Earlier this year, the problem was so bad I went to the Apple Store for a replacement. I'm glad they were so willing to do this as it was within the one-year warranty. At the same time though, the guy in the Apple Store told me NOT to hold the iPad like that! Really? Yet another occasion when Apple is dictating how we should hold their product? #SmartkeyboardEdgeGate!

Following the replacement in January I have been really careful not to put excessive pressure on the seams when I use the device, however today I couldn't believe it when I noticed THE SAME WEAR is starting to happen again in the same edge position of the keyboard!

My only thoughts are to try to ask for yet another replacement, and from now on, always detach the keyboard when not in use. In my opinion this defeats the idea of having a Smart Keyboard in the first place.

2 stars because I don't have a beef about the actual keyboard feel and functionality, yes it can be a little glitchy but nothing is perfect. The lack of backlight doesn't bother me and i haven't noticed the lettering wearing off (perhaps because I'm on the replacement?). It's the poor build quality of the edge seams that's really spurred me on to write this review.

    Really disappointed Apple!

    Embarrassment for Apple

Interacting with my iPad Pro is so much easier!

This Smart Keyboard makes long typing sessions so much more enjoyable. And, I'm loving the keyboard combinations like CMD + C/V/Z and CMD/OPT/SHIFT + arrow keys! I'm beginning to use my iPad Pro more like a desktop than a tablet now. Thanks, Apple!

There is no way to stand my iPad in any comfortable viewing angles

The keyboard is OK, I do like the fact that the keys are not that rubber fake button type thing. I have tried to stand my iPad up with this case and it does not work in any form or fashion. Who does anything on their device with it sitting at a 90 degree angle? No one! I like that fact that it is slim and fits the iPad snug but I can never figure out what the to do with it while I'm just using my iPad. Even this review is typed on a Targus Bluetooth keyboard and that Smart Keyboard that is made by Apple is folded under my iPad at this time.

Not designed well...at least for the 9.7 inch iPad Pro

As a keyboard, the iPad is too heavy and causes the the keypad to tilt up, which is horrible for typing. As a cover, it can be tough to hold because of the way the keypad sits on the iPad.

    Exceeded my expectations.

I recently wanted to get an iPad Pro for school to replace my Air 2 and help with all the PowerPoint presentations I edit for my college classes. I originally just bought the Pro and Apple Pencil, thinking I could just use the Smart Cover for my Air 2 as a stand for the Pro and my Logitech Keys-to-Go keyboard like before. Thankfully, the old Smart Cover wasn't compatible with my new Pro so I got the Smart Keyboard instead. It took some getting used to the different ways you can fold it and the way the keyboard felt compared to others that I was used to, but once you do it adds such great utility and convenience to the Pro. The keys feel pretty nice and I love the sound they make when you type away on them. I like how you can easily switch from type mode to flat when you need to start writing/drawing with the Pencil. And it even has the 2 positions from the Smart Cover (The "Watch" position is much more vertical than the Smart Cover version; I'm guessing to differentiate itself from the "Type" position).

I didn't expect to like this product that much but it has been a pleasant surprise for me. Highly recommended.

    Terrible value. Poor design.

My rating: 1.5 out of 5

I only would recommend this keyboard if:
-you want to have an accessory that uses the Smart Connector,
-you just want to type in environments that have great lighting,
-are concerned with having only one side of the device protected,
-having only 3 viewing angles is acceptable, and
-are looking for a product that was made by Apple.

    Here's why:
Sure, it allows you to type. But it's not backlit. That's right. This expensive keyboard for a "pro" device was not designed to be used in all lighting conditions where you may need to see the keys (like dark classrooms, lecture halls or other places life has less than bright environments). Why would you pay over $100 for a keyboard that doesn't have backlighting?

It can only protect one side of the device. It's not designed to cover both sides. Even though Apple's website mentions it will fold into a cover, it's important to keep in mind that the other side will be exposed.

Typing on this Smart Keyboard was pleasant for me. But, others did not like the feel of the keys. I do like that this keyboard has a coating that makes it stain, water and crumb resistant.

I like to watch content on my iPad Pro and this folds into an angle for that. My experience with that angle was not good. The way it folded for watching the screen made it so that the device would topple forward if I swiped or tapped too hard.

It is also really important to keep in mind that it easily detaches from the iPad Pro. I wanted to love this accessory. But it just wasn't for me.

    Great Product I Use Daily

I bought the Smart Keyboard for my 9.7-inch iPad Pro almost a year ago after using the Keys-To-Go with my previous iPad. I LOVE this keyboard and the fact I don't have to charge anything makes my decision a better one. The keys feel natural right out of the box and feel even better now that I've been using them for almost a year. A concern for me was if I would lose typing speed, however that is not an issue at all. This is my go to device if I'm in a tight workspace or in a classroom setting where my MacBook Pro would be a bit too big. I'm at a loss at all the negative reviews of this keyboard; mine has not torn/ripped, there is no problem connecting to my iPad (since the magnets do all the work for you...in 3 seconds), and the keys haven't malfunctioned at all. I highly recommend this keyboard to anyone getting an iPad Pro!
