My first impression of the LG was pretty positive.
For someone who works with video all the time or with photos, editing, it's kind of nice to have.

Can this monitor do night shift and dimming in sync with a connected macbook pro?
- Asked by Charles O from Denver
- on 13/02/2018
Answer
The LG UltraFine 5K display’s Night Shift works based on the Built-in Retina Display settings dialog The LG UltraFine 5K display’s Night Shift works based on the Built-in Retina Display settings dialog (see HT207513). But this is not the case with (Automatically Adjust Brightness) option. With the LG UltraFine 5K connected to my Touch Bar/2017 MBP (latestOS/FW) there are Display dialogs for each display, but only the Built-in Retina Display has an (Automatically adjust brightness) checkbox. At the Apple store I checked an LG-UF5K display connected to a new Mac Pro as the primary/only display but the Display dialog also did not have the (Automatically adjust brightness) checkbox, so this limitation is not a function of being a secondary display. Per LG UltraFine 5K display (27MD5KA-B) spec sheet at LG website the UF5K capability is implemented. Per LG UltraFine 5K display (27MD5KA-B) Troubleshooting section of the manual macOS still lacks support. It is annoying that a couple times a day the UF5K is too bright/dim while the Built-in Retina Display adjusts. I did not expect this given Apple marketed and sold both. I have put in a feature request for macOS support. Right now this is the one daily detractor to an otherwise nice display. I did make a request to Apple to add support.

I have the latest MacBook Pro - Can I buy two and use them in tandem as a dual monitor set? Do the monitors daisy chain?
- Asked by Ryan B from New Gloucester
- on 24/02/2018
Answer
You can buy 2,3, or 4 and use them in tandem. They do not daisy chain though. The LG 4K display d You can buy 2,3, or 4 and use them in tandem. They do not daisy chain though. The LG 4K display does not have a DisplayPort output to support daisy chaining. The LG 4K is a USB-C display (USB-C with DisplayPort alt mode, using DisplayPort 1.2 (4 lanes), and USB 2.0). I don't know if macOS supports DisplayPort MST (for daisy chaining displays using DisplayPort). The MacBook Pro supports DisplayPort 1.2 which can't support more than one 4K 60 Hz display anyway. Each side of the MacBook Pro (left side and right side) can support two displays. The MacBook Pro 15 inch allows up to four 4K displays. The MacBook Pro 13 inch allows two 4K displays. Thunderbolt 3 can support two 4K 60 Hz displays from a single port using Thunderbolt display daisy chaining, a Thunderbolt 3 to Dual DisplayPort or HDMI 2.0 adapter, or a Thunderbolt 3 dock. However, I am unaware of any Thunderbolt 3 product that has more than one USB-C port with DisplayPort alt mode (required for USB-C displays like the LG 4K). It might be possible to use an LG 4K with DisplayPort only (no USB) by using a USB-C to DisplayPort cable, but then any functions of the display that require USB will not be usable (audio, brightness control, USB hub). Brightness control may be possible using an app that uses DDC/CI. To get two ports supporting USB-C with DisplayPort alt mode from a single Thunderbolt 3 port (so you can use the other 3 ports for other stuff), you need the following: 1) two Sunix UPD2018 or two Delock 89582 (PCIe USB 3.1 gen 2 host controller with USB-C DisplayPort alt mode port). 2) one Thunderbolt 3 PCIe expansion box with two or more slots such as the Sonnet Echo Express SE III, or two Thunderbolt 3 PCIe expansion boxes each with one slot such as the Sonnet Echo Express SEL (Thunderbolt 3 Edition). 3) one Thunderbolt 3 to Dual DisplayPort adapter such as the one made by Sonnet (not all Thunderbolt 3 products are Mac compatible so check the manufacturer's specs).

The only 2 computers cable of powering this 5k display currently are the late 2016 13" MacBook Pro and late 2016 15" MacBook Pro. The only other Macs capable of driving a 5k display are the Late 2013 Mac Pro and the Late 2014 27" iMac 5k and bothe these require the use of two thunderbolt 2 ports. The Dell UP2715K 27-inch 5K display is the only 5k display that Apple "official" supports for these two computers. If using a Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter, then the Mac Pro can run this monitor, but NOT at If using a Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter, then the Mac Pro can run this monitor, but NOT at its native resolution. Your Mac Pro will run this monitor at 3840x2160 @ 60Hz, as opposed to the native 5120x2880 @ 60Hz. Hope that helps.
