  • Overview

The USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter lets you connect any Mac with a USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) port to an HDMI display, while also connecting a standard USB device and a USB-C charging cable.

This adapter allows you to mirror your Mac display to your HDMI-enabled TV or display in up to 1080p at 60Hz, or UHD (3840 by 2160) at 30Hz. It also outputs video content like movies and captured video. Simply connect the adapter to a USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) port on your Mac, and then to your TV or projector via an HDMI cable (sold separately).

Use the standard USB port to connect devices such as your flash drive or camera, or a USB cable for syncing and charging your iPhone, iPad or iPod. You can also connect a charging cable to the USB-C port to charge your Mac.

This is the access If you'd like to spend 80 bucks on an accessory that will cause your external monitor to blink on and off all day long... look no further!!! This is the accessory you've been dreaming of. I've tried different monitors. I've tried different HDMI cables. Nothing seems to help. This thing is incredibly frustrating to use. If you do decide to call support, expect to be on the phone for an hour only to be told "try plugging it into another port" on your single port usb-c macbook...

      WARNING - Bad Hardware

Apple even lists a few drives (including their own SuperDrive, pre 2011) than don't work with this adaptor, but there are more that don't work - both for storage OR Time Machine (!). This is really bizarre since the other USB-C to USB-A adaptor WILL work, but since this adaptor doesn't supply power to your MacBook, it's not a long term solution. In the instances where the Multiport adaptor DOES work with an external hard drive, it can experience drastically reduced speeds and randomly unmount the drive. The straight USB adaptor, with the same drive, does not show these issues. I can't believe Apple put this on the market without 1) more rigorous testing and 2) with this serious an issue. Having an external hard drive work with your laptop is a pretty important requirement. Terrible, terrible piece of equipment. I was an Apple employee and have worked with Macs for decades. This issue was diagnosed with a genius at an Apple Store after we went through several Multiport and regular USB adaptors, and then followed up with additional testing at home. Apple should be ashamed.

It doesn't affect usability but it is annoying that $80 dongle is not performing up to pair. So for the reason of sloppy QA and high price, I will take away 2 stars from a perfect score.

About 75% work fine, but I've had one outright failure and many others not working fully, with some combination of HDMI, USB3.0 or power input not working. I have two on my desk at the moment with non-working HDMI and am trying to get the firmware upgrade to take - yes, these things need firmware upgrades. Both adapters have gone through the installer without error, laptop rebooted (seriously, Apple, what do I need to reboot the entire laptop for??) and then immediately asks me to upgrade the firmware again. The sad fact is, you need these adapters to do anything useful. We've bought much, much more sensibly priced ones on other sites but found them even less reliable. It's worth noting, the USB-C port on these adapters is designed for power exclusively - you cannot plug a USB device into this port, which seems a silly oversight especially for the 12" MacBook (all our devices are 4-port MacBook Pro's however). When they work, they work like you'd expect from Apple, but the quality control is awful and for a device that lets you do something essential, the price is through the roof.
