is the charger the same for ipad and iphone?

Can I use the same cable that came in the iPad box to charge both my iPad and my iPhone 4S? They appear to be the same, but I want to make sure.

Despite so many people on this forum saying yes, those people are actually wrong.

The correct answer is No, the charger plug is not the same for the iPad and the iPhone. The CABLE is the same - that is the cable is a USB to Lightning/30 pin connector (depending on the model of iPhone/iPad you have) however the wattage of the iPad charger plug is higher than that of the iPhone plug.

Therefore, you can use an iPhone plug to charge the iPad although the iPad will take longer to charge, however it is not recommended to use an iPad charger on the iPhone. You will burn the battery of the iPhone out by using an iPad charger plug to charge an iPhone.

In summary, my advice is use the correct charger for the correct device.

  • As the other comments say, yes, the chargers are interchangable, but you might want to keep an eye on your iphone for overheating if it's using the ipad charger. My wifes iphone battery just had to be replaced and the technician said their were "bubbles" in the burned out battery. She uses our ipad charger with her phone sometimes. I never use the ipad charger and have never had any iphone battery issues.
