Problems connecting two LG Ultrafines with new 15 inch MacBook Pro

It also appears that the MacBook will not charge via the Thunder bolt cable if the USB-C hub is being used for other peripherals (e.g., charging my iPhone). Considering that Apple unveiled the new MacBook Pro, showcasing a setup with two external LG Ultrafines, it's pretty disappointing that these basic functions don't work seamlessly. When you also consider there very high price for these items, it's not really acceptable. The monitors are beautiful (when they are working) - but I'm waiting to see if Apple fixes these issues fast - otherwise the monitors get returned. Apple Support don't know anything about the problem because it's too new.

The display finish is similar to Apple's latest MacBook Pros - clear, glossy but very little reflectance - the best of both worlds. Connected to my 2016 MacBook Pro with its native USB-C connector, the display is stunning. Another surprise? The built-in speakers on this monitor are amazingly clear, loud, and good quality, unlike most monitors. You can even feel the bass (to some extent - don't expect miracles). Now for the downside for all who had *hoped* they could connect this to older Macs with adapters. You can't. The specifications are very clear - this monitor requires a Mac with a native USB-C connector. Apple's Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter doesn't provide DisplayPort pass through. And third party USB-C to DisplayPort 1.2 connectors don't handle the 4096x2304 resolution of this monitor. The monitor is simply not recognized by older Macs.

Internal display speakers sound ok but aren't great. Display looks awesome (zero stuck pixels and no other visible flaws I can see).

I tried various adapters to get it to work with different external monitors. I tried to use a LED cinema display with a number of DisplayPort adapters and none worked reliably. I tried a number of displays via the HDMI adapter and was disappointed with the quality of font rendering. I tried the ACER KMIPUZ USB-C 2560x1440 display and was disappointed with font rendering and how it behaved when waking from sleep. If you are used to external monitors on PCs, note that Macs need a lot more pixels to get the same visual quality because windows renders fonts differently (much more crisp) than Macs do. It took me a lot of research to figure this out. I was worried about the LG UltraFine 4K because I thought it might not be big enough (the 5K is not supported on the MacBook). However, I am VERY pleased with the LG 4K. The font rendering is perfect. It does everything you would want it to do regarding sleep. It even wakes up when I hit my Logitech keyboard! You can take a sleeping closed MacBook and plug it in to the USB-C and then hit an external keyboard to wake the system without opening the MacBook. The display is so crisp that you can get by with a smaller screen than you might expect. A+

You can attach accessories to the back of it to make a docking station setup for anything you would connect to it when in a desktop mode. Unfortunately it utilizes USB C instead of Thunderbolt 3 so the back ports only support USB 2.0 speeds, but it being USB C instead of Thunderbolt 3 adds compatibility with the 12 inch MacBook. The speakers are better than the ones built into the notebooks but they are not as good as dedicated speakers and this monitor does not come with the webcam. All things considered, this is a fantastic product and if you don't have a desktop but have a MacBook, this is the way to go.

I bought a *full-fledged* USB-C cable from Belkin, which is not cheap, but seemed to greatly improve the sleep/wake issues over the included USB-C cable. 2. A software update from LG (via their LG Screen Manager software available from their website) that seemed to coincide with the 10.12.6 MacOS Sierra update on June 19, 2017 has also seemed to make it run smoother. Setup notes: I also bought an HDMI<>USB-C adapter for a second, non-retina external monitor and just plug the power cable into the back of that. Both monitors work well concurrently in concert with my late 2016 MBP w/ Radeon Pro 460. Hope this helps someone else out there.
