The USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter lets you connect any Mac with a USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) port to an HDMI display, while also connecting a standard USB device and a USB-C charging cable.

This adapter allows you to mirror your Mac display to your HDMI-enabled TV or display in up to 1080p at 60Hz, or UHD (3840 by 2160) at 30Hz. It also outputs video content like movies and captured video. Simply connect the adapter to a USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) port on your Mac, and then to your TV or projector via an HDMI cable (sold separately).

This is the accessory you've been dreaming of. I've tried different monitors. I've tried different HDMI cables. Nothing seems to help. This thing is incredibly frustrating to use. If you do decide to call support, expect to be on the phone for an hour only to be told "try plugging it into another port" on your single port usb-c macbook...

Apple even lists a few drives (including their own SuperDrive, pre 2011) than don't work with this adaptor, but there are more that don't work - both for storage OR Time Machine (!). This is really bizarre since the other USB-C to USB-A adaptor WILL work, but since this adaptor doesn't supply power to your MacBook, it's not a long term solution. In the instances where the Multiport adaptor DOES work with an external hard drive, it can experience drastically reduced speeds and randomly unmount the drive. The straight USB adaptor, with the same drive, does not show these issues. I can't believe Apple put this on the market without 1) more rigorous testing and 2) with this serious an issue. Having an external hard drive work with your laptop is a pretty important requirement. Terrible, terrible piece of equipment. I was an Apple employee and have worked with Macs for decades. This issue was diagnosed with a genius at an Apple Store after we went through several Multiport and regular USB adaptors, and then followed up with additional testing at home. Apple should be ashamed.

Apple support tells me that the USB-C in 2017 Macbooks are not designed to work with monitors that don't support the DisplayPort(TM) standard. It seems strange that Apple would produce an entire line of laptops that only works with a select few displays. A more logical answer would be that the USB-C port is under powered. I've had some success using an HDMI amplifier with this dongle, but it doesn't work in every case. Either way, Apple needs to solve this problem. Maybe create a dongle that pulls additional power from a separate USB-C port. Then again, after Jony Ives' "Apple hears you" comment, I suspect accessory makers are holding off to see if Apple reverts to an old port standard.

It does not charge. The HDMI port rarely works. You cannot connect a USB-C mouse and USB keyboard simultaneously.

TRASH - HDMI flashes or doesn't even work

I hooked a Samsung 4K display and it constantly flashes. I connected my Sharp TV and it didn't work at all. This $89 piece of trash is going back to Apple.
