is it still limited to 16-bit/44.1khz from the optical output?

It doesn't have optical. I've had no trouble streaming audio at 24/44 and higher.
Airport express and extreme both transmit over 2.4 - 5 gHz, 802.1x etc.- Answered by Bill B from Red Oak
