If you're running iOS 6 or earlier, press the home button twice in rapid succession. A row of apps running in the background will appear at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold your finger on one of these apps until they jiggle. Then tap the red "-" sign on all the apps you wish to stop running. When you're done, press the home button again.
If you're running iOS 7, press the home button twice in rapid succession. Preview screens of apps running in the background will appear in the center of the screen. Slide each preview screen up and off the screen to close the desired apps. When you're done, press the home button again.
