Can this drive be used by two computers at the same time
Instead of using the second port for daisy chaining im wondering if you could use it to connect to a second computer and use both computers with the one device. For instance, an iMac and Mac Pro.

Best Answer:Very unlikely. But if both computers have Mac OS X 10.9, you may want to connect the iMac to the Mac Pro using a Thunderbolt cable, and create a Thunderbolt network bridge. Then, you connect the drive to the Mac Pro and share the drive with this network.
If you do not need the speed, you can buy a NAS instead.- Answered by Tommy R from Montreal

can this be hooked up to a network

AnswerYes and no. It's not an "NAS" (Network Attached Storage) device, so it can't just be connected directly to the network. But you can attach it to any Mac and turn on File Sharing in System Preferences and the drive will then be available to other computers on the network.

Answer
Not directly - the drive is not a NAS system it has no independent ethernet or wireless interfaces. The only way you can share it is to share it through the Computing device i.e. macbook, mac pro, imac that it is connected to.

How closely matched does a replacement drive have to be? Can a drive be identical in size but different speed (access time / rpm)?

AnswerBeing as this is either configured as RAID 5 (factory) or RAID 6 (user) you need to make sure that the drives are identical. Using non spec, non enterprise grade drives compromises the integrity of the RAID. Using a RAID 5 configuration, you can rebuild the RAID if one disk fails. It takes about a day to rebuild the RAID. If you lose another drive while rebuilding the RAID, ALL of the data is lost. RAID 6 allows for a 2 drive failure, at the expense of capacity. The best bet is to order replacement drives from Promise.

Is it easily portable? I need to work from two locations - 70 miles apart. I would not want a NAS because of the small bandwidth and transfer cost.

AnswerDepends on what you mean by portable. It's pretty big and pretty heavy but is transportable ( as opposed to portable)

Answer
The R8 ships with all 8 drives in place, that's why you choose to have either a 24 or 32 TB version. It may change depending on the batch, but mine came with eight "Seagate 3TB Performance SATA 3 Hard Drive ST3000DM001 7200rpm". The 32TB ships with 5400rpm drives, so is a little slower.

Is this able to be used with a Macbook Pro?
I'm looking for maximum storage, and I'm looking into buying a Macbook Pro, and I was just wondering if the Pegasus is able to be used with it.

AnswerThat would depend on which Macbook pro you have. If your macbook pro has Thunderbolt port(s) then yes, the drive has 2 X Thunderbolt 2 ports and it is backwards compatible with Thunderbolt 1 so as long as you have a thunderbolt port on your macbook you can use this drive.
