Yes, I use the Airport Extreme with a Netgear AC-1200 range extender, model EX6150. However, it will have an unique network name and you will have to switch networks unlike the new Mesh systems.

can airport extreme be a server running Mac OS Server
I want to build a website offline so I can teach myself before going online.
I have a Mac Pro late 2013. I know my server will get large in size so an external drive is preferable.- Asked by Callum W from Perth

AnswerWhat do you mean "can AirPort Extreme be a server"? The airport extreme itself can not be a server. Its a router. But the Mac Pro 2013 you have can be a server and you would connect that directly to the AirPort Extreme and OS X server will configure the AirPort Extreme automatically for whatever services you want on the server.

The one that they are showing above your question is a newer model than we have but I don't know that it would be an issue.
