Yes.
Trying to connect to a DVI monitor. If this doesn’t work, any suggestions?
Yes you can since the iMac contains a Thunderbolt port. Note the following:
- Note that Thunderbolt ports are Mini Displayports as well.
- iMac 2011 21.5 inch Thunderbolt port is a: Thunderbolt 1 port (10 Gbps).
- The wire you're going to use is the Thunderbolt 2 cable (20 Gbps). It is compatible with Thunderbolt 1 connection, so don't worry about that part. You choose 0.5 m or 2.0 m (Apple Thunderbolt Cable (2.0 m) - White). It's also male-to-male.
- This adapter you're currently ask about (Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter) will have a male end (USB-C) and female end (Thunderbolt 2). The male end (USB-C) will go towards the newer MacBook Pros (with the new Thunderbolt 3 USB-C ports) and the female end will attach to the Thunderbolt 2 cable (male-to-male) to your iMac.
- Press Command-F2 once that's all set up.

I have a Precision 5520 with a USB Type C port which supports Thunderbolt 3 and I have successfully connected my Apple Thunderbolt display (circa 2015) to my laptop using the adapter.
trying to connect a superdrive to my Macbook Air 2019.
The Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter is for connecting Thunderbolt 2 or Thunderbolt 1 devices/computers to a Thunderbolt 3 device/computer and for connecting Thunderbolt 3 devices/computers to a Thunderbolt 1 or Thunderbolt 2 device/computer.
The Apple USB SuperDrive is a USB device. It is not a Thunderbolt device.
To connect the Apple USB SuperDrive to a USB-C port (such as a Thunderbolt 3 port of a Mac), you need a USB-C to USB-A adapter or a Thunderbolt or USB-C dock that has a USB-A port.

It works fine for me.
I use Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter together with Thunderbolt cable to connect macBook Pro Mid 2015 and the LG ULTRAFINE 5K (27")
Unclear which end of this adapter is the male and which is the female. Can I use this for target mod
Yes. The Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) end is male, the Thunderbolt 2 end is female. For the use you have described, you will also need a Thunderbolt 2 cable (male/male) to connect this adapter to your 2013 MBP's female Thunderbolt 2 port. So it will look like: 16 inch MBP>this adapter>Thunderbolt 2 cable>2013 MBP.

It would NOT benefit you to purchase this. The Samsung T5 SSD doesn't support Thunderbolt 2, it supports up to USB 3.1 (although it apparently can only go as fast as a USB 3 connection). Your Mac Pro has 4 USB 3 ports, so you should just use the USB-C to USB-A cable included with the Samsung T5 SSD.

Confirming (I bought the adapter and tried it) this indeed works
i.e. MBP 16" -> Pro Display XDR -> Lacie TB2 Rugged RAID I don't want to connect the drive directly
No, that will not work. The Pro Display XDR does not have downstream Thunderbolt ports for connecting devices, it only has a single upstream Thunderbolt port for connecting to a Mac. The 3 downstream ports on it are USB-C only, not Thunderbolt - while the connector is physically the same, you cannot plug a Thunderbolt device like this adapter and/or a Lacie Thunderbolt disk into the ports on the XDR. You can only use USB-C disk drives with the XDR, any Thunderbolt devices must be plugged directly into your Mac.
