    Much better design

This seems to be a much better design than the old magsafe plug. The construction is more robust, and the head/plug lies flat against the the computer so it isn't as prone to being knocked about. I have a clear hard case to protect my macbook aluminum, and i can confirm it works absolutely fine with the case installed. Still overpriced at $79, but at least its $20 cheaper than the old one.

    Try resetting the SMC

I recently bought this Adaptor because my previous one just stopped charging my (late 2008) Macbook. This new one worked fine...for two days...then it also stopped! I had read all the bad reviews but really, if you want to keep using your Macbook you have no choice but to buy a new charger. I had treated the thing like it was the crown jewels; never kinking the wires, never tugging the connection and plugging and unplugging with the utmost care so when it suddenly stopped working I knew it was not because of any harsh treatment.

For interest's sake I tried my old one again...low and behold, it worked! The orange LED came on and my Macbook started charging. This was very odd - I had tried everything I could think of to make that thing work before and nothing. So I then reconnected my new adaptor, just to see if the glitch had somehow cleared. Nope! The new one still didn't work and the old one still did.

So after a lot of googling on the subject I eventually saw a tip about resetting the SMC (support dot apple dot com/kb/ht3964). That fixed it! This seems to indicate that the problem was not with the adaptors at all but with my Macbook (or possibly the aged battery). So before you conclude that the adaptor is a faulty design (as you might do from reading some of these reviews) consider that many of those bad experiences may be similar to mine and could be remedied with a simple SMC reset.

    Why so expensive?

I was looking to buy a second power adapter since I move around the house so much, but $79? -forget it.

A tip for power supply failures

On a Friday over five years ago I went to the Apple store and purchased six MacBooks and a Mac Mini as an office file server. I went back to my office, passed them out and let my Windows IT person go. I told my staff two things. "Go home and learn how to use this over the weekend. We are converting to Apple on Monday. Second, DO NOT wrap the power cable around the supplied "wings" on the power adapter because you will eventually damage the cord. Simply wrap it in a circle around a few fingers and run the end of the connector through the middle of the loop." It's been five years and we just had our first adapter failure. So, that's my story. Don't use the foldout storage on the power adapters. People tend to wind them to tight and break the internal wires next to the adapter. This obviously isn't the only reason for an adapter failure, but I'd be willing to bet some people are causing their own problems. There is room for improvement in the adapter or you would be able to use the built-in storage without a problem. Oh, and if the green light on the adapter is on make sure it is not just the fact that you need to reset your battery. I've had to do this on two machines after a few years. Plug the adapter into another Mac (if available) and see if it works.

    Not cool...

I bought this cord in August because my cousin's cat, ate through the original that I got when I bought my macbook in 2008. I read other reviews saying that the cord stopped working after a few months of them buying it and hoped that I would have better luck. I left my computer open and not plugged up for a few hours and when I went to plug it up, there was absolutly NO charge coming from the cord. My computer is still dead b/c I don't feel like dishing out another $83 for a new cord, but I really don't have a better option because thats what Apple feels like they should charge. There really isn't anything you can do, but this is horrible

    Finally redesigned plus extra warranty!

So not a happy bunny as two of these frayed/broken but store supplied replacements with 3 year extended warranties thrown in. Apparently Apple have redesigned them back to the old T shape and are now issuing 3 year warranties as standard. Had to have the old L shape for my Macbook due to its age but at least I now have peace of mind and money in my pocket for a few years.

    Good.

Unlike most reviewers, I've never had a problem with this power adapter since I bought my MBP 13' almost a year ago. However, I must admit that.. although it fits closer to the computer and all, I miss the old block-shaped magsafe. Sometimes i have issues connecting the new MagSafe to my computer and it's extremely annoying, whereas the old magsafe never gave me any trouble. Also, the new cord has a weird feel to it, and it's extremely stubborn to wrap around the hooks or even keep the cords contained under my desk.

I miss the old magsafe. I wish they would still sell it :/

    Not bad.

I'm surprised there are so many negative reviews for this power adapter. Mine just broke after four years; the wires became exposed after bending it so much. My main complaint is the cost for replacing it.

    Better then the original design

After my dog took a run at my out-of-box adapter and it, finally, biting the big one, I picked this up from my local Apple store. A lot cleaner of a design as far as how it attaches, relatively flat and flush. Should cut down on the cord pulling out of the mag. Still warms quite a bit (same as before) and Apple has not addressed the cord-to-powerbrick attachment, so could still pull out down the road. That aside, excellent choice for replacement.
Model being used on: 2008 13" MacBook.

    Great Product, But ...

The adapter is great and I love it. But it gets scratched easily and the top of the cord near the mag safe gets broken easily! Not such great price tag, but its excepted from Apple.

    Worked well for 4 Years

I've owned my MacBook Pro 13" for almost exactly 4 years. The wire on the charger has started to fray for quite a while, but nothing too major until just a few weeks ago. A large, 2 inch hole in the covering of the wires developed. Other than that, it has been very good.

    Adapter

From reading the reviews from other customers I have found that most of the problems originate from the way that the cable protruding from the power brick frays quickly. My adapter hasn't had that problem probably because I'm very careful with it. I wrap it in a special way (I leave a loop out before I start coiling it around the prongs) and that relieves the tension on the cable. The fact that my adapter almost never leaves my room and is on a tile floor almost all of the time might also be the reason that is hasn't broken yet (tile has a higher melting point than carpet or wood so it dissipates heat quickly -->happy power adapter). I did hold back a five star review because it is really warm to the touch when it's plugged in (crossing my fingers for a design that allows for better heat dissipation in the future). All in all, TREAT YOUR ADAPTER AWESOMELY = LONGER ADAPTER LIFE. That is all :]!

    NEW Design

The new design is awesome, recently purchased another one after the first charger had frayed. Haven't had it for a long period yet, but there are noticeable differences from the other model. It does not get as hot, wires are sturdy and thicker. But the only problem with this is that I use a shell and it gets in the way of my Ethernet and firewire 800, and would have to take the bottom shell off when I have to use the firewire to log and capture.

    Thoroughly pleased

There are a lot of bad reviews for this product and while I agree that some of Apples chargers do not last as long as they should, mine have lasted for a decent amount of time. I purchased my macbook pro in late 2010 so this charger has lasted me 5 years. Taking it to school and uni and now work aswell as on holiday interstate and overseas! It has a few war wounds that are my own fault and the white plastic has come apart around the charger head, but I think 5 years is a fair effort! Especially seeing how much use and travel it has done!

Better design, but still more problems.

I had my old magsafe (the one that stuck out of the laptop) replaced with this free of charge under warranty.

The design of this is much sturdier and the magnet portion, being metal now, is much better.

There are still some problems though. If you want to sit your mac sort of flush up against a wall or have it on a lecture, so you need to spin the magnet portion around, but still require the ethernet, the firewire or the mini display port, then you're out of luck. also. try tugging the cord from behind or tugging it up away from the floor/desk. it will not come out because of the new design. the only way to make it come out is to pull to the left. The point of the magnet is so that if tripped over or caught on something whilst carrying your laptop, it will come out easily and not risk damage to either of the units.

Better, but they still need to rethink some things.

    What's with all the hate?

My MagSafe charger on my MacBook 2010 lasted 6 years of heavy use before even taking damage (pulled the powerpoint end out at a bad angle, bent a prong) and the only issue before that was a weak magnetic connection on the computer's end (fixed, FYI). What's everyone else's problem? My mate had one too, and his was fine...

Good for new MacBooks, bad for old

When my old MacBook charger eventually broke, I bought this as a replacement, however it didnt work properly and as a result had to buy a new MacBook in the end. It works great with that and this is 3 years after I got it, so overall I am very happy with it

great concept but I think it need a little more work.

I have a mid 2010 macbook unibody, I barely had the use the magsafe at all because I charge it at night and and I have a good battery all during the day. well a couple days ago it just went out. the LED light dim green regardless of whether it was plugged up or not. so I bought a new one. The new one works great but the old one (coupled with some reviews) gives me the impression that I might be buying a new magsafe every year or so. Im hoping that my assumptions are wrong.

    Improved... seemingly

I am quite pleased with the new adapter and the way it is built. The only reason I gave it only four stars is the fact that I have only owned it for a day. My previous adapter lasted only about a year and four months. This disappoints me as my old PC laptop adapter lasted over two years and only died because a puppy cut the wire with its teeth. I am hoping this new charger will be more like that one.

The reason I switched from PC to Mac was for the improved design over the hinges from my old PC's monitor. I hope to find I have made a good switch and not traded one flaw for another, or my next purchase might be a cheaper laptop with cheaper replacement adapters despite my love of Macs. This, of course, would happen once either the laptop dies or the new adapter (if it does not live up to my standards). That being said, lower the prices. Seriously, new PC adapters only cost me $20, and that was a year and four months ago. I doubt prices increased THAT drastically.

    Works for me.

I've had my Macbook for about 2 1/2 years. The first year with my charger was great, however my dog chewed it up and it eventually stopped working. But even though it was mangled, it still did the job wonderfully and it was a long while before it conked out. So I'm on my second charger and I have no complaints. I like the magnetic feature, it's very convenient... never had my Macbook get pulled with it. Also, the cord, for me, doesn't break easily - and I unwrap it and rewrap it all the time. The price is a little steep, but I can't charge my laptop without it, so it's a necessary purchase. So all in all, I am pretty happy with the charger.
