In using the Apple Pencil now for a few months I have found that in fact, it does turn its self off after a certain amount of time. If you leave your iPad pro's blue tooth on and do not use or move your Apple Pencil for a while it will "go to sleep", once you pick your Apple Pencil up or bump it, it will wake up and reconnnect. However if you turn off your iPad pro's blue tooth when your Pencil was still awake and connected, it seems you have to reinsert your Apple Pencil into your lightning port to reconnect it.

  • No - there isn't a way to turn it off or put it to sleep, and it'll continue to lose power even if you're not using it. (Disconnecting it from Bluetooth might alleviate this, and it's easy to re-pair if you do.) That said, it's quick and easy to power back up. A few minutes plugged into your iPad's lightning connector will get you powered back up, no adapter/scramble for an outlet required. You can also use it while plugged in - just use an A/C adapter with a longer cord and the little male-to-female plug adapter that comes with the pencil.

If all else fails, it DOES work as a regular, piece-of-plastic stylus even when the battery is dead, so as long as you're not using it for touch-sensitive graphic work, you should be fine if it dies.
