Is the iPhone "Do Not Disturb while Driving"? feature exclusive when driving my car, or when riding in any car with an active blue-tooth system?
Today while riding in a friend's car I realized my iPhone 7 Plus was responding with "Do Not Disturb while Driving?" to incoming cellphone calls, even though I was a passenger. Was this something which happened as the driver has never linked his cellphone via blue-tooth to his car, an anomalous, one-time singular event? Or is my iPhone 7 Plus capable of sensing when I am driving, as a passenger and replying "Do Not Disturb while Driving?" via cellular i/o signal ?

The iPhone can't tell if you are driving or riding. You have to let the phone know you are just a passenger. Go to the settings in your iPhone ( I have the X model so this is what I look for on my phone yours maybe different ) When you open Settings at the top of the page is a Search Box-type in driving settings this should open the Do Not Disturb setting. In this you will find the settings your are looking for. Tap Learn More about Driving settings. In here it tells you to tap the "Do Not Disturb While Driving" measage on lock screen. This then opens the settings you are looking for-you call tell the phone you are riding and not driving and it will work like normal. If you hookup with blue tooth to the car Siri will read your email, text and let some calls through. If your car has " CarPlay" there some other setting you can set (I do not have a car that will hook to my phone), Apple (and others)does make-Hands Free devices you hook to the iPhone by way of bluetooth that you can use while driving.
