Audio Fidelity loss converting Thunderbolt 3 to Firewire 400?

I have successfully gotten both of my old firewire audio interfaces (PreSonus Firestudio Mobile & Focusrite Liquid Saffire 56) communicating with my 2018 MacBook Pro by converting Thunderbolt 3 --> Thunderbolt 2, Thunderbolt 2 --> FW 800, and then a FW 800 --> FW 400 cable that connects to my interface.

I'm noticing a fairly significant loss of fidelity on the audio played back through the interface. Is this something others have experienced? Is the signal getting squashed somewhere in the adapter chain? Is there any way to correct this? Thanks!
