    Yes! If you have an optical drive and at least 1GB of RAM, you can install Snow Leopard on a "totally-erased" hard drive using the retail disk.

  • This was a WELL-used 2008 laptop computer I could not bare to seeing go to waste, so I replaced its dead optical drive and top case. With a fresh/successful 0S X 10.6 Snow Leopard installation this potential "doorstop" will now be something I can use for laptop experimentation. Thank you to the Apple community for its helpful replies!
