Is it possible to connect a new IMAC Thunderbolt 3 port to a Firewire 400 audio interface?

I have seen there is a:
-Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adaptor
-Thunderbolt 2 to Firewire 800
-Firewire 800 to Firewire 400 (which I have)

Will this work?

Yes, it will work. You will indeed need both the "Thunderbolt to Firewire 800" adaptor, and the "Thunderbolt 3 (USC-C) to Thunderbolt 2" adapter.
I have 2 external drives (one FW 400 & one FW 800) daisy-chained to the new iMac's Thunderbolt 3 port.
It's a costly solution having to buy 2 adapters to accommodate Apple's two different sized thunderbolt ports, but this does get the job done.

  • peace,

i made my fireface 400 (firewire interface work)
with the AKiTiO T3T thunderbolt 3 to thunderbolt adapter and the Apple thunderbolt to firewire 800 adapter (400 is practially included with the firewire cable you mentioned) set in daisychain.

it all works except that the interface needs its own power-supply because via the adapterchain it doesn't get enough power.

the adapter is quite expensive but it works.
