I am running 10.5.8 on a MACBOOK AIR and want to erase everything and upgrade to 10.6.
Can I do this successfully using an iMac on my network to run the DVD, as the Air does not have an optical drive.
Early model Air; 1.6 GHz Intel Core Duo; 2 GB 687 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Connect MacBook Air to a network that has either:
a) a PC with optical drive. PC must be Windows XP or Vista. Or,
b) a Mac with optical drive that is running OS 10.4.10 or later (OS 10.5 or OS 10.6 preferred), and the Mac is not newer than mid-2010 (Snow Leopard installation will probably not work from newer Macs).
Use Apple's "DVD or CD Sharing" or "Remote Install" software to install Snow Leopard. Full instructions can be found on the Snow Leopard disc.
On a Mac with optical drive, open the "Installation Instructions.app" inside the "Instructions" folder.
On a PC with optical drive, the Snow Leopard disk has two programs... one called "Remote Install Mac OS X.exe" which allows MacBook Air users to install OS X from the PC's optical drive. The other program is "DVD or CD SharingSetup.exe" which will let the MacBook Air use the PC's optical drive.
Use an external optical drive attached to the MacBook Air. The installation "should" work from the external drive.
Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8GB in size. Use Disk Utility to erase the flash drive and reformat as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". Then, on a Mac with Optical Drive, use Disk Utility to RESTORE the Snow Leopard disc to the flash drive. Connect the flash drive to the MacBook Air. Restart the MacBook Air and hold the OPTION key. Select the flash drive to start up from. Now, you should be able to install Snow Leopard.
TIP: Consider doing installation of Snow Leopard on a separate partition from your current OS 10.5.8 installation. That way you can start up from either OS.
