If your Mac is supported by OS 10.6, then first install OS 10.6, followed by software update to OS 10.6.8.

Once OS 10.6.8 is running, the App Store app will be on your Mac. Open the App Store app and search for OS X. The most recent version of OS X supported by your Mac should be available.

From OS 10.6.8 you can go direct to any later version of OS X that is supported by your Mac.

PS: Firefox is very versatile and recent versions will run on most versions of OS X from OS 10.6.8 onward. Try installing FireFox with OS 10.6.8 to see if you get the most recent version of Firefox.

Each version of Safari on other hand is limited to minimal range of OS X versions.
