With this adapter, can you have the MacBook charging while at the same time outputting video to an external monitor?

So I am thinking the power adapter would connect to the USB-C port on the adapter to charge the MacBook and at the same time the external monitor would connect via the VGA port.

If I then want to connect a USB flash drive or USB mouse, I can connect that to the USB port or USB hub which would connect to the single USB port.

Also, is the USB version 3.0 or 2.0?

Presuming you are referring to the new 12in. MacBook, the answer is yes. You may use a, rather pricey 79$ multi- adapter. Your options are: 1) USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter; and 2) USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter. The former gives you HDMI, USB, and charger. The latter, VGA, USB, and charger.

  • Yes, you can use all three ports at the same time. The UCB-C port is used to charge the portable Mac, the HDMI cable is used to output video to an external display/TV, the USB port is used to connect to USB-A (some people call this the standard USB type) devices.

The USB Port on the adapter operates at USB 3 spec.
