do i need to upgrade to leopard before i upgrade to snow leopard first?

No. You just need to install Snow Leopard. Snow Leopard simply requires 1GB of memory and an Intel processor. It does not need Leopard already installed. (Lion requires Snow Leopard and at least 2GB of memory and certain Intel processors.)
I upgraded to Snow Leopard directly from OS 10.4.11. [Although I did the upgrade to a clone of the hard drive partition with OS 10.4.11... that way I had a "dual boot" system and can start up in either Snow Leopard or Tiger (OS 10.4).]
