Any time you plug a new external hard drive into a current Mac it will ask you if you want to use it as a Time Machine back up. You say "Yes". It will format the drive (the G Techs are already good to go) and start the back up process. The first back up will take a LONG time because it copies EVERYTHING on your computer. Make sure if it is a laptop that it is plugged in. Later back ups only take a few minutes because they only copy new files. If you are doing critical stuff (say for business) you would want to back up every day. I back up once a week.
It is VERY important to have all of your data backed up-I just can't stress this enough!

Plug it into a USB port. Open up time machine (or you may be prompted when you plug it in the first time) and select it as your time machine drive.
