You must purchase Snow Leopard (OS 10.6) to upgrade further. Once Snow Leopard has been "Software Updated" to OS 10.6.8, one can upgrade directly to any later available version of the OS, provided your Mac hardware is supported by that OS X version.
OS 10.7 and OS 10.8 are available by purchasing a redemption code from the online Apple Store, and then redeeming the code through the App Store app (which comes with OS 10.6.8 and later) to download and install either of those versions of OS. OS 10.9 and OS 10.10 are no longer available as any Mac that can run those OS's can also run OS 10.11. OS 10.11 (El Capitan) is the latest version released and is available for free through the App Store app.
Please note: If your Mac is PowerPC-based, it can not be upgraded past OS 10.5.8.
If your Mac is Intel-based, you can run OS 10.6 and later, provided the hardware is supported and you have sufficient memory (minimum 1GB needed for OS 10.6, minimum 2GB needed to OS 10.7 and later).
To find out if your Mac is Intel-based, go to "About This Mac" under the "Apple" menu. Beside the word "Processor" look to see if "Intel" appears anywhere in that line. If "Intel" appears, your Mac is Intel-based.
