Is this required to connect an existing Thunderbolt display to the new MacBook Pro? Does it pass the USB and ethernet data to and from the display?

Yes it is required, and yes it will enable the use of the display, audio, camera, microphone, USB ports, and ethernet port.

An adapter is required. It can be this one or a third party adapter. USB and ethernet data will pass through the adapter.
