Unless you have created an install USB drive, or have an image of the disc, you will need a disc.
(For instructions on installing from USB drive, search for "Install snow leopard without dvd" on internet.)
Since you reinstalling Snow Leopard and therefore already have a license, try borrowing a disc from someone, or have them send you a .DMG file of the disc. Otherwise, you will need to purchase again.
[I believe that starting with Lion (OS 10.7) Apple created a recovery partition from which one can reinstall the OS. Hold the OPTION key when starting the Mac. If a recovery drive is present, you can start up from it. Details on another method involving holding CMD-R during startup can be found by searching for "Reformatting Mac OS X without a recovery disc or drive" on internet. ]
