I purchased an Apple TV in 2010, have there been any significant improvements to the hardware since then?

Yes, the current 3rd generation Apple TV supports 1080p video whereas the 2nd generation only supports up to 720p. They look exactly the same, but the model numbers and order numbers are:
2nd-gen: A1378 - AppleTV2,1 - MC572LL/A (released September 2010)
3rd-gen: A1427 - AppleTV3,1 - MD199BZ/A (released March 2012)
3rd-gen Rev A (current): A1469 - AppleTV3,2 - MD199LL/A (released January 2013)
There is no difference in functionality or performance between the two 3rd-gen units. You can check your version by selecting Settings > General > About.
