It's a new high-speed interface which does two things. It replaces the mini Displayport connector (although, since it has the same physical connection, it can run most displays using a mini-Displayport to HDMI/DVI/VGA adaptor). It's also daisy-chainable to other Thunderbolt devices such as a storage array for fast external drive access.
This gives Mac laptops and iMacs, for the first time, a faster connector than Firewire 800. This is very useful for professionals who have high bandwidth needs (e.g. video editors).
