You need Snow Leopard to get the Mac App Store, which is how all later versions are delivered.

Your Mac must have an Intel processor to go past OS 10.5.8. If it has a PowerPC processor, OS 10.5.8 is the furthest your Mac can go.
Snow Leopard (OS 10.6.6 - OS 10.6.8) introduces the App Store app, which is needed to download and install later versions of the OS. Once the App Store app is on your Mac, you can update directly to any later version of the OS provided your Mac's hardware is supported by that OS. In order to get the App Store app on your Mac, Snow Leopard needs to be installed first and updated to OS 10.6.8.
Yosemite (OS 10.10.1) is the OS version currently offered through the App Store. For versions of the OS that are not found in the App Store app (such as OS 10.7, OS 10.8, OS 10.9) you may need to go to the online Apple Store to get (purchase?) a redemption code that will let you access these OS versions through the App Store app.
