will an intel Mac run Mac OS X 10.5

Yes. As long as the Mac model is supported by OS 10.5. (For example, Macs sold with a later version of OS installed on them, will sometimes not allow an earlier version of the OS to be installed.)
I had a 2006 Intel iMac that ran OS 10.4 and later OS 10.6. I didn't install OS 10.5 due to the retail cost of that OS.
When installing, make sure you are using the retail version of OS 10.5, or, use the install disks meant specifically for your Mac model (in years gone by, the install disks that came with a Mac purchase could often only be installed on that exact same model).
