Answer
You can mount is as a drive in Finder and so in turn can back it up using one of the commercial online backup providers (Crashplan, Mozy, Amazon, etc.)
Or if you have access to, say, a friend's network use free tools such as Rsync (I use the DropSync GUI, available from App Store) to automatically back it up.
I use both of these options for my critical data - cloud backup (guaranteed but slow) and Rsync to a Mac Mini server at a friend's house. -

Does the AirPort Time Capsule (2013) allow USB or Ethernet-connected drive to be used as part of the Time Capsule functionality?
Would like to explore connecting a USB-drive-enclosure and/or an Ethernet-drive-enclosure to allow more backup space to be available to users on my home network. Even if this would supercede the internal drive, I would find it preferable to other options like SLUG or FreeNAS which can be cheaper but potentially less-reliable.
For example, an Ethernet-capable NAS of, say, 10TB could be connected to one of the Gigabit ports, but would the AirPort Time Capsule (2013) recognize it as an extension of the internal storage, and therefore part of the Time Capsule storage media used for native Mac backups?
If there's not a way to do that, how arduous or risky is it to move the existing backups from the Time Capsule's internal drive to an external drive (ex: Ethernet-connected NAS) to free-up space on the 2TB/3TB internal drive, without corrupting the contents of that internal drive? Is there a way to initiate the move from within the Time Capsule itself, and thereby avoiding downloading/uploading all of that content over-the-network (to/from the PC) unnecessarily?- Asked by Harlan H from Mequon

What is the data transfer speed of the connection between the internal hard drive and the LAN?
If using an external hard drive connected via USB the transfer bottleneck is the USB connection:
USB 2 = 480 Mbit/s
LAN (Ethernet) = 1 Gbit/s
LAN (WiFi ac) = 1.3 Gbit/s
What is the data transfer speed of the connection between the internal hard drive and the LAN? -
Will the new Time Capsule work with machines running 10.6.8?
The product info suggests 10.7.5 and a much higher Airport Utility are required, but the info also says it is compatible with any WiFi device.

AnswerIt is possible to set up and administer the device using the Airport Utility 1.3 for iOS if you have an iPhone/iPad, once set up, all features of the device should work natively with 10.6.8 (apart from admin, which you will need the iOS device for.)

Answer
Without having more details from you, yes, you can connect to another router. You will need to setup the Time Capsule as a bridge instead of a router. This is done during normal setup.

Can this replace a UVERSE WIFI router box? We have UVERSE wifi at home and can this unit REPLACE that unit AND provide the WIFI signal ?
- Asked by Steve E from San Antonio

AnswerYes, it's compatible. You need to disable the SSID in your U-verse router. You can contact them to find out how to do this, and it's really simple. I have a successful connection both wired and wireless with the Airport TC. Once SSID in U-verse router is disabled, you will plug your ethernet on one end from U-verse router and the other end into the bottom port on your TC. Then plug the power cord from TC to outlet. Follow directions from there. All wireless devices will need reconnection to the new network. All wired devices will plug directly into TC from now on and not U-verse. Hope this helps.
