What a piece of ... shameful product (euphemistically speaking)

I bought 2 adapters so far and I am about to buy a third one because of the cable shielding breaking (close to the connector). It is totally unacceptable that I would have to buy a new adapter every year because the cable breaking (and this is NOT because of heavy use or abuse). Apple's business model when it comes to these kind of accessories (e.g. cables in particular) is shameful ! Their choice of materials leave MUCH to desire as it is by far the least durable among the different brand cables I own. I may be better off buying a much cheaper adapter and made out of much better materials than this piece of .. shameful product. NO, the Design is NOT everything, Apple! Durability is ALSO important! I'm glad to see i'm not among the few giving this product the lowest review.

poor quality and cost a fortune

Terrible product... the wire frays where the wire connects to the adapter unit.... charging almost a hundred bucks for a faulty product that will only just outlast Apples 1 year warranty is a disgrace. Complete ripoff

This charger is a complete and utter joke...a failure for Apple

I'm on my 5 charger...one a year since I bought my 15" Macbook Pro in 2009. Truly disappointed in the quality of this charger. The outer covering starts to deteriorate as the warranty approaches. How in the world can a company like APPLE that makes such high quality products make such a low quality charger? I have bought disposable laptops made by HP that have cords which are still working 10 years later.

APPLE better wake up and start taking care of their customers or they will start to lose market share. People won't continue to pay exorbitant prices for low quality products for very long.

Is anyone at APPLE monitoring the comments on their own online store?

With more than 1300 and all of them saying the same thing, either they aren't or they don't care...either one is a major problem.

Someone needs to wake up and realize that when people spend more than $2k for a laptop they want the little stuff to perform just as well as the big stuff.

    Really really really really rubbish.

These products are so bad, not just normal bad either, I'm talking like the most serious ultra-bad you could ever think of. Think of that and then double it a bit, even then it's not really that close to just how bad these power supplies are.

At this moment in time, yet another of these has died on me and the product was only a couple of months old. My girlfriend is distraught and this has ruined our Christmas.

    Happy Xm0ss Apple.

    A failure for apple

I love Apple products, but they have totally failed when it comes to this cord. We have had our computer 4 1/2 years and it is doing great, but we are on our 3rd cord. It has a one year warranty, but lasts about 15 months and then just falls apart.

I always encourage friends and family to buy Apple, but this power cord is definitely a disappointment. I am shocked at its poor quality. This is not up to the normal Apple standards. I am frustrated that Apple has done nothing to remedy this problem.

    Very Unhappy

Seriously. I've bought two of those cable in the last year because the small wire broke right next to the transformer. For 90$ I would expect a much better product. Why not make that wire detachable so I don't have to buy a Power Adapter every time. Im telling you, it's the last time i'm buying one of those. Change that product and make it better.

    Another disappointed APPLE customer

I've had my MBP retina 15'' for 5 months. Today my power adapter stopped working. It smells bad. Obviously something burned out inside.
In fact I am on a battery power right now. Spent over 2500 USD for this unit to have a reliable business laptop:) This is a joke. My previous HP Pavilion is still working after 7 years of use. Going tomorrow to the Apple service shop and will definitively reconsider buying any apple products in the future.
Reading here over a 1000 reviews saying this adapter is a piece of junk and apple doing nothing to fix the problem?????

    wire frayed

I was also careful and have no puppies or children to chew on the cord. My fray was also at the brick end and my computer is only 1 year old! Today when I tried to connect, there was a spark and now my laptop's fan is running hard. I might have blown my battery! On my way to APPLE store--hope fully ONLY have to replace the power adapter, but am afraid it will be a lot more than that! Terrible design!

    another unhappy customer

I've had my Macbook Air for three years and am about to have to buy my third magsafe adapter. Frayed at the magnetic end. Sad given that I don't take the adapter anywhere and never roll it up. I think that there should be a redesign and a recall. Soon...

    Unacceptable: Lasts about 2 years

Am happy to done with Dell, but one thing I can say is that 10 years later their adapters still work. The exterior rubber gets soft and frays exposing the wires, and the internal plastic tube breaks creating a potential for short circuit. I'm amazed this hasn't been recalled for issues of both safety and durability.

    TERRIBLE DESIGN!!!

I have been VERY careful with my MacBook and the power cord! No kids, no dogs! So it def isn't being chewed on and played with!! Such BS that I am now out of power because a faulty frayed wire at the base near the brick!! WHY WHY WHY can't there just be cord that can be detached from the brick at BOTH ends so that I am not wasting $80 for a CORD!! Not the brick!! That is absurd!!!! So much for a "superior" Apple product!! Haven't even had my MacBook for 2 years! VERY upsetting to have to run out and buy a replacement already!!

    Very Poor

Ive just purchased my third one of these in four years. They always come apart at the same point; where the mag safe end of the lead attaches to the transformer. They're not good enough, way too expensive and I'm bored of having to pay upwards of £65 to replace an entire unit, when it's just a cable and it's insulation that are the problem. Really bad, do something about it.

    Pathetic quality

Considering that the MacBook Pro is hands-down the best, as well as the most expensive, laptop on the market, I find it absolutely inexcusable that the power adapter cord is such UTTER RUBBISH! I've had my current MacBook for less than three years now, and in that time I've gone through two adapters and my third one just started acting up so no doubt is on its last legs. As any MacBook user knows, the problem is most often that the magsafe plug separates from the cable, and given that the cable's other end is hard-wired to the adapter, one has no option but to throw the whole shebang away and buy a new one - and the blasted things cost upwards of £60 a pop! Apple -- you really need to sort this issue out, because it's seriously cheesing off your otherwise happy and loyal customers, and you're not doing yourselves any favours by pretending that there's no problem! :-(

    Appalling, should rebrand to Mag-unsafe

Another broken charger, same problem as usual. Cable deteriorated where it connects to the Macbook, leaving exposed wire and posing a potential fire risk. So many one star reviews speaks volumes! This was my first Macbook Pro and it will be my last.

Disappointed in 85W MagSafe Power Adapter

I am now on my 3rd Power Adapter. Wires fray at the magnetic connector. You think Apple would get this glitch fixed or
do a Recall. Surely Apple Technical Department must be aware of this.

Looks like I have to replace mine again

Like Brad F said in his perfectly written review. I have to buy one of these to replace my old charger because of the frayed cable on the brick end. I know too many people who had to replace their charger for the exact same reason. Apple please look into this problem and fix it.

Funny thing about the Apple power cords

I have had 3 MacBook Pros, 2 MacBook Airs, and a MacBook (the black one). The only problem I have EVER had with the Apple power cords (whether for older models or newer models) is when I was careless enough to leave it out where my puppy could find it and chew it up. I don't understand why so many people say they are so problematical. I don't use the "wings" to wind it up with though, so maybe that is why I don't have the experience others do. I just wrap the whole power cord in loose loops--it takes a little more space in my computer bag but I've never had one fray.
