    Melty Cord

I've had this power cord for two years and suddenly last week the cord got so hot near the power block that it melted a hole right through the casing. I immediately got some electrical tape and taped it up tight to keep it all together but I knew I would have to replace it soon. I noticed only two days later that it was getting hot again and had melted the electrical tape and the casing was coming apart like butter. Now I have to spend $80 of a cord that should last as long as the computer. C'mon, apple. Fix this, please!

    To the 'Geniuses' in California

Sick and tiered of Apple behaving as if these very poor excuse for charges fall apart because of the supposed abuse that us consumers use them when they know that we all have the same complaint therefore the problem is with the design/manufactures!! I am inclined to think its the design to be honest! Fix up Apple or you'll find us all switching over to the dark side, and it wont be because the software is better it will be because you couldn't bother to sort out better quality chargers!!

If I could give it less than 1 star, I would.

Whatever Apple has changed with their adaptor design, they need to reevaluate and go back because there are some major flaws. The first cord that came with my 2008 Macbook Pro (a "T" style magsafe) lasted over 3 years and the only reason I needed to replace it was because the pins in the connector were no longer connecting properly.

I will now be forced to purchase yet another of this "L" style adaptor because of frayed wires near the connector to the computer. It will be my THIRD. In less than TWO YEARS. The first replacement lasted maybe 3 months. The second was doing fine for a year and half - until the plastic casing inexplicably burst and exposed the internal (fraying) wires.

Is Apple fricken serious right now? Is it playing a joke? Is it giving me the veritable finger because it knows I'll have to shell out another astounding $80 BECAUSE I CAN'T USE MY COMPUTER WITHOUT A POWER CORD??

This is ridiculous and infuriating, not to mention dangerous - Apple, you need to get your act together and start LISTENING TO YOUR COSTUMERS.

    Poor engineering

I've been through two of these power adapters. Good thing I bought Apple Care. Very poor design. I simple sturdy piece of rubber or plastic around the base of where the cord to the computer comes out of the adapter would solve countless problems. Better yet, engineer a removable portion so only a small cord needs to be replaced, not the whole adapter.

    Cable Breaks

The cable brakes and there is no way to fix the cable. Get ready to spend $80 a year on power cables.

    Poor Quality and Expensive

I have had several Mac's and laptops. Laptops that are over 4 years of age now are still alive. The Macbook Pro's Magsafe Power Adapter dies after a year more or less. In my case, it's about 17 months and I cannot charge my Macbook because of wires that were loosened. Whatever cover these wires, they are of POOR quality.

VERY DISAPPOINTED but I have no choice but to buy another one or at least a replacement of better quality.

What will it take to fix the strain / fray issue once for all?

Seriously, look at the 1.5 star rating and number of people buying new power adapters at 80 bucks...Why does such a good product have to suffer this one fallacy?

    So sad.

This charger has broken for me twice in the last 2.5 years. It would spontaneously stop working (the light would not turn on), probably due to a faulty connection at the head or damage in the adapter body. It's not a problem with the wall plug because I've tried replacing that. It's ridiculous that now I will be buying a third charger-- at this rate, it'll soon cost me half of what I paid for the macbook pro! Is this your business plan Apple? because it's not cool. I love your products and always expect great quality, but these chargers are killing me... DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!!!!
I wish there were such a thing as zero stars.

    Weak charger

RIP to my charger. Apple, you need to figure out a way to make this last FOREVER! This charger lasted me 3 years and just went out on me today. Now I have to go to your store after work and throw $$ at you. Thanks.

Another one down, 2nd power adapter to stop working

Yea this is the second time that I have had an apple power adapter for my macbook pro's die because of frayed wires and starting to "catch fire" (i.e. smoke and brown marks around the base where the wire goes into the main cube.) Only option is to buy another one (thats probably refurbished) and hope it doesn't do the same thing in a year.

    Strain issue still not solved

I had the same issue of strain/fraying and dicolouration in the wire at the connector points, due to overheating. The damage is not due to mistreatment. The product has only had extremely careful use. The cable has only been stored in loose loops, with the end points especially protected from strain.

It is a design issue, and by now it has been very well documented by users. Similarly to the T connectors, these L connectors should be recalled, and replaced free of charge until a more robust design is developed.

Will they ever get it right??

I have been using apple laptops for over 12 years. In that time I've had 5 powerbooks/macbook pros (between work and personal). I have NEVER had the original power adapter last the life of the computer. In fact, I don't think I've ever gone through fewer than 3 power adapters with 4 of these computers. One macbook pro was stolen, so I didn't have time to get to #3.

12 years. 5 computers. The design of the adapters has changed at least 3x, but the problem hasn't been fixed (there was the spaceship one, the first magnetic one, the second magnetic one, then I guess they went back to the first mag design). Will you ever get this right apple?

I'm on my way to the apple store to purchase adapter #3 for my mid-2010 macbook pro. I feel robbed. At least Apple gave me the second one free, so they will have only stolen $160 for this computer, so far.

Can I give no stars? Cord Is JUNK!

If I could have selected no stars I would have.

The same problem that everyone else is having has happened to me in less than two years, and it would have been sooner if I didn't start taking my iPad around with me for the past year. What a horrible rip off. I can buy a quality 100' extension cord at Home Depot for under $80 and this little cra*py 6' charger cord with an equally cra*py 85w transformer, that heats up like crazy when I charge, costs the same amount? My HP charger lasted the whole 5 years that I had that laptop and I traveled a lot more with that computer. I'm torn. My hard drive on this MBP just crashed last month, now my charger won't charge, this is not what I expected when I switched to apple.

    Disappointed.

5th magsafe power adapter in 6 years for me

They are awful, 12-14 months tops, usually the wires inside that detach, but this time around its the actual mag part, think it may be the sprung contacts as you can wiggle it to work but if you move you machine it stops charging. What is it with apple and chargers? we have a retina ipad which only works with a specific combination of charger and wire, any other wire(the same wire, the one that comes with it or with an iphone) and it just connects and disconnects the power constantly beeping, oh and airport plugs blow up.
Whats more amazing is they never do anything about it, they changed the magsafe adapter to a right angle but it still breaks where it meets the transformer, it does make me angry, ever time i have to buy on i think about dumping apple.

    Need Improvement on Design

I think there could be improvement on the design. I really wish there was a T shape adaptor to plug in. Since this is an L Shape adaptor, I can't connect an ethernet cord while charging my laptop because there is no space. Makes no sense. I sometimes need to do battery consuming projects while connected to the internet, so I really wish Apple would offer a T shape adaptor for my Mac Pro.

Besides that, my last charger lasted me 4 years, which is pretty good.

    Burnt-out power adapter

Not only am I a long-time devotee of Apple products, an AppleCare customer and an owner of several Apple products but I have also never had cause to complain about any Mac product previously.

However, I am decidedly unimpressed by the build quality of these MagSafe Power Adapters.

The adapter supplied with my MacBook Pro lasted barely a year and had not been either heavily used or used in a non-standard manner which might have caused it to fail (e.g. yanking it hard, stretching it, spilling liquid on it, etc.). On the contrary, it had barely been moved from my desk and I had always taken considerable care with it.

One evening, whilst typing a report, I heard a strange 'bang' sound and instantly noticed an unpleasant burning smell. I looked at the power adapter and saw that not only had the cord frayed so as to reveal the wiring within close to the connection with the MacBook Pro but also that the cord itself showed clear signs of having been scorched along its length.

If I'd left my MacBook Pro unattended, I believe that this could have caused a fire.
