poor design, broke in a year

Yes Apple, we know it looks pretty when it comes out of the box, but the lack of proper strain relief leads to a broken, wire exposed cable within a year. Also, the white rubber & plastic never stays clean and bright nor looking nice with normal use, and within a few months is dingy gray and all marked up.

For once, truly awful design and poor quality from Apple. Yes, really.

I have three Macbook Retinas in the family. All three have these power supplies. Prior to this, I had Windows laptops for over 20 years. No power supply ever failed. *All three* of these have failed. In their extreme cleverness, Apple have created a thin low voltage wire with soft outer cover. Feels great, like all Apple products (though I don't feel my power cables very often). But it rides up the wire, and bunches together, and eventually tears open, revealing the wires. Ultimately, after about 12-18 months, they start to short out. Come on Apple! Get your act together and re-invent this so that they last longer than 10 minutes. I'm happy to pay Apple for better products, but paying more for this garbage is insulting.

    Awful

I have had to buy two (NOW THREE) of these chargers in the past 2 years. The charger design is awful. The cord is far too thin and not nearly as durable as other apple products. It heats up to an extreme temperature. I have spent over $180 repairing something that was never my fault to begin with. Very unhappy that I now have to go and fork out another $80 for my THIRD charger.

Had to buy 2 already since I bought buy macbook 2 years ago...

Everyone has this issue. Most of my friends have had to replace their chargers and I know people who have switched over to PC laptops for this specific reason.. :(

Works Great for just over a year

Then like every other user on here the cable tears, I could tell it was going to do it for about the last 6 months as it kept sitting itself at one point where it began to curve the wrong way. Sure enough it split and now I need to find £65 for another rubbish one, they could at least acknowledge it is terrible and sell it about the £15 mark!

Frayed cord - same problem as everyone else.

Have to buy a new one because the cord frayed and there is no alternative.

    CONTANT TEARS

I have to say this is one of the worst chargers i have ever come across in my life. I have gone through 3 chargers at the moment (looking for a 4th currently!!) all have have torn due to wire strain at the exact same location. After the first charger, I have been very careful in looking after the charger making sure its delicately handled to limit wire strain but the charger doesn't last longer than 1 year on average. Absolute joke, Im sick of paying for replacements.

Fire the designer of that thing

My next Mac I will buy when this disaster has been fixed. Unbelievable trash. It disconnects all the time (!) and working with a laptop on your lap while charging your machine is impossible. Darn. I hate this thing. The old magSafe was great. Bring it back, please.

    Every 6 Months

Fine if you don't "use" your macbook but I do and have consistently gone through a charger every 6 months almost 3 years. The cable is just too weak to handle regular wear and tear, which is unacceptable in my opinion. I use my laptop at home and at the office, moving the cord and machine at least 12 times per week. Do yourself a favor, spend the money and buy a backup, you'll need it.

Not durable; runs way too hot

You would think that Apple would eventually realize and rectify the issues with their power cables for MacBooks, but yet another generation of laptop is accompanied by the same lousy cable design. Having owned 4 apple laptops in the past, I am cognizant of the need to be gentle with these cables; even so, this cable already needs replacing after just over a year of use. It wouldn't be so aggravating if the flimsy cables did not cost a ludicrous amount of money to replace. Also, the brick heats up to about 200º during normal use. 1 Star awarded for the magnetic-release (definitely the high point of this cable), 0 stars for just about everything else.

    DESIGN FAIL

The charger won't stay in place. Any movement will get your laptop disconnected. This will happen a least 20-30 times a day if you like using your laptop on your laps. The whole experience of using my Mac is suffering from this problem. Magsafe 1 was awesome, Magsafe 2 is definitely failure. I can't believe Apple didn't conduct the proper usability testings. It's such an obvious design flaw :(

Completely overpriced for the lack of quality

Like many other people it seems i have also had numerous mac chargers die on me. £65 is awfully expensive for a chargers, especially one that has this many problems.

    Apple over-engineering at its worst

I have bought 5 of these in my lifetime, only 2 are still safely operating. They don't stand up to normal life usage. There is a computer inside this power supply that adjusts the voltage upwards to increase the power output when it detects certain models of Apple of laptop and downwards for others. Looks to be about 16V-18V adjustment range. This is just stupid. Make a fixed output supply (like every other device maker on the planet) and sell it for $15 (like every other device maker). It would actually work, be easy to replace in remote parts of the world (if you happen to be on vacation or work trip), and withstand normal wear-and-tear. We've all already bought the computer, do you have to gouge us here too?

    Time for a design change

Its obvious this Apple product is not up to standard. So many negative reviews can't be wrong. The whole thing defeats the point of a notebook because its too heavy, runs too hot, its too big & the cable & winder clips poor quality.

Come on Apple - change it.

    Bad product

My Macbook Pro is five years old. I have just bought my FOURTH charger. The rubber sheathing on the other three frayed until wires were left exposed, leaving the product a fire hazard.

    HORRIBLE quality.

    A necessary evil

While this is probably the only viable option for a charger, Apple has done a really terrible job with this one. The cord near the end that gets plugged into the computer is unbelievably weak. I am very gentle with these cables and have frayed two of them so far. The exposed metal means there is a risk of shock if your cable ever gets to this state (and with any normal use, it will).

Also, because the cable extends perpendicular to the natural angle it should (as opposed to the much better design of the previous adapters where the cable just goes straight to the back of the laptop) you are forced to bend the cable under most scenarios. It's almost as if Apple wanted them to break with normal use.

Adaptor is a danger to my family

So I am on my second charger in two years and am preparing to buy a third one. The first one overheated to the point of melting the wire. On the second one, it still heats up a lot and the wire has deteriorated at the connections on the adaptor side as well as the magnetic connection side. I have put electric tape on both ends but now it is starting to spark when connected to laptop. With the amount that my Macbook Pro cost, I would think that there would be a lifetime guarantee. Thank goodness that the first one went out before the first year warrantee was up. Please Apple, make a connector that lasts as long as the laptop.

    Very disappointing.

I bought my Macbook pro 13 inch retina display late august and today the charger cable split which revealed the inner wiring giving me a couple of shocks. It still charges the macbook but I'm not sure how safe it is given the exposure of the wires. The price is ridiculous considering how poor it seems to be. This is evident in all the other complaints on this forum, sort it out Apple.

    Does Not Last

After about 2 years of use, the cord broke. At the point where the thin part attaches to the box, the rubber part ripped and the inside frayed. It works sometimes at very odd angles, but usually not at all. Problems began after the first year; the charge would be spotty, coming in and out. For costing $79.00, this is a horrible product. I did not expect to have to replace my charger so soon.
