Same quality issues - and very expensive

I've experienced the same issues with one of my MacBook pro magsafe power adapters. The other one is perfectly fine.

The first cable (about 2 years old) has shredded at the magnetic adapter end and heats up hot enough to burn my fingers getting it off. The unit itself also heats up to an incredible temperature. Both were sourced directly from Apple, yet, this is the kind of quality I might expect from some rip off copy.

Strangely, I have never had this issue with my other MacBook pro (same model, a few months younger - one is for work, the other family. The adapter that has failed has been the least mobile - tends to sit on a desktop; whilst the one with no issues has been packed in bags and carted around. It suggests quality control issues with some batches ok and others faulty.

So, what are Apple going to do about this? Personally, I am going to demand a refund as, under UK consumer laws, this qualifies as a design or production fault that should be refunded regardless of the age of the product. Perhaps more importantly, it must be a fire hazard. Last, the cost of these is outrageous, particularly given the quality.

    Terrible product

Mac laptop chargers are just so bad and I can't image a company like apple that fail to design and deliver a better quality charger.
I have purchased 4 chargers already and every one of those fail working within 1 year.
    1st is overheated and burned
2nd and 3rd stop working after about 1 year
4th is even worth, i took extremely care, not bending the cable, pick it up with 2 hands, etc... but still can't prevent it failing miserably.
charge looks like new but just won't charge.
Please spend some profits you earned by selling those expensive products and come up with a better charger, i am tired of spending 80$ every year and have to replace this junk. i am starting to loose faith in apple, how come a reputable company come up with a product like this?????

    Perfectly fine

I'm buying a second one for home use, and I'm really not sure why there are so many negative reviews for these power adapters (and all of Apple's cables for that matter). I've had my two current MacBook Pros for 11 and 3 years, and I'm still using the original chargers for them! They've been taken with me on airplanes, to work and to school, and apart from some grime and scratches, these adapters are perfect. There's really no need for the poor ratings, except maybe for the high price.

-The magnets are just fine, pull some of the cord up and leave some slack next to you, it's supposed to pop out easily so the computer isn't accidentally pulled off a table or lap. And you don't want powerful magnets in the laptop anyway.
-When you pull the plug out from the outlet, grasp the head of the plug, don't yank the cord. Do the same with the magnet side. This applies to any cable, from any manufacturer.

Seriously, I've had one for 11 years now, and it shows no signs of the damage people report. I'm not saying every single one is perfectly manufactured, things happen, but I think many of the issues people have are from neglect/mishandling.

easy to break and no alternative solution

So we have to bear with it till a smart design comes along.

    Poor Quality

Count me with the rest of the reviewers who have a frayed cord. The charger has worked well for me until it started fraying. Wish these were higher quality.

    Horrible Charger,

I don't understand why a company like apple is failing to produce a Charger Which cannot last long for @ least one year, This is my 3rd charger,
I have completely lost faith in apple in this matter i have a Samsung laptop which i use for Last 3 Years, i don't have any issue with charger or the Machines, But same time i purchased this Apple Mac Book pro Retina which the charger is replaced 3 times and it cost SLR 11,000 to buy the new one. Due to this i have lost faith on the product quality of all apple products, I have switched to the Samsung LAPTOP as my core machine i had no other answers to this, Cable is horrible, Charger Smoking, Very High Heat, I think it is very risky to use this product.

    I'm on my third charger.

My chargers last less than 1 year on average. Seeing that you're not able to produce a sturdy piece of equipment even though you've known about this problem for more than 10 years, could you guys at least permit other companies to build aftermarket chargers for your Macbooks?

Poor adapter, not had one last longer than 2 years

My 18 month or so Macbook retina has a failed magsafe 2 adapter. The unit gets very hot and died what I would consider very prematurely. The same thing happened with my first macbook air so I'm very disappointed having to buy 2 or 3 adapters through the life of 1 laptop.

    Macbook charger 84w

I just had to use my pliers to take out part of the charger that was stuck in the computer. Luckily I didn't electrocute myself as every time I tried to ply the part of the charger that was stuck in the port there where sparks. This was the second charger I've purchased. I've had my mac book pro repaired twice and the warranty extended two years due to to problems I've had with it. Overall...I think my computer is a lemon....and I regret switching from my mac. I never had as many problems. And never spent the money I have on this computer not only to purchase it but to keep it running.

Horrible, expensive, and sub par accessory that will not outlast your mac

Two year old equipment now doesn't charge the mac. Essentially you are leasing this piece of junk for $2 per month from apple.

    bad quality

This is the second time I'm having to get a new charger for my late 2013 rMBP. I had this happen twice to the charger of my 17" MacBook Pro too! The cable close to the Magsafe connector that attaches to the laptop frays and brakes, showing the metal wires inside. After that happens, you can prolong the lifespan of the charger for another 6 months to a year if you're lucky, with some unsightly electrical tape. But in the end it will fail, setting you back another 60 to 70 USD. Not a great design for a company that prides itself in making top gear!

    Why is this SO expensive!?

It has horrible quality and breaks at the brick easily and constantly overheats. So why is this thing $79!? So I have to give apple $79 every year to replace it?

    No problems at all

I was so surprised to see all of the negative reviews. I've had mine for a year and it has been flawless. The only thing I would like is the ability to buy it without the extension cord (less expensive), so I can keep an extra one in my car for emergencies when away from home. I usually have my Mac on my desk and keep it plugged in most all the time. I don't know if the way I use it affects the good performance I've had or not but wanted to mention it.

    Cord breakage is guaranteed

As with the iPhone charger cord, the cord for these chargers is guaranteed to break even if you take care of them like I do. The way they are made to make you wrap them means the cord is eventually going to break open. And they are not covered! So you're out $80! This needs to be covered.

    I would give it a "0" if I could...

My charger is less that 2 months old, the cord is broken at the magnet plug. The magnet plug is the part of the charger that recently started making popping and sizzling noises whenever the cord was jiggled. Just now it was SO hot that the whole room smelled like burnt plastic! Now that I know the charger can get that hot, I realize that it must be the reason that the decal on my laptop cover is failing as well. The charger must have been cooking the plastic cover so that it peeled and flaked off right above the charger. Ugh. Now I have to drop another $80 for something that I know is junk. Come on Apple, get it right!

Extremely poor upper cable, but brings in some of apples Revenue !

What is there to say really, on my 3rd charger now and its always the upper cable that splits and then burns up. Have decided to acquire accessories to stop fraying on the two ends of the thinner cable. This will be my last charger i buy. Its disgraceful how a company can know of such bad quality in its chargers but not take action. But apple is not the company it once was.....

Simply put..... we have no choice but to buy this bad charger, but look online there are some amazing accessories to stop the cables breaking too much.

    Good but delicate

I've had my laptop and charger for almost two years. My charger is still in good shape-no tears, cracks or frays in the rubbery coating-even at the points where the cord connects to the end pieces. I really baby it though. Every single time I transport my computer it goes in a padded case and I re-coil the charger cord (making sure not to kink it) and clip the magnetic end to the cord. It then goes in its own side pocket of my laptop bag. I make sure never to bend it (again, particularly at the weaker connection areas). I love the magnetic method of attachment. Mine works well and only falls out if I really yank the cord by mistake. It's definitely saved me from breaking the port or yanking my laptop on the floor countless times!

I don't give it a 5 only because it seems so delicate. The cord is very thin and flexible, and I don't think it would take much to permanently kink it (damaging the wires inside) or break it where the cord connects to the end pieces. It does sometimes get very hot during charging. I only wish they would make the cord covering a big more substantial, so it would better protect the wires against accidental bending.

Suprised by all the negative reviews...

I have just had to replace the charger on my 2012 retina macbook so 4 odd years service from it. This is very similar to all the PC laptops Ive owned.

All I can think is that i just pitch my cable into my bag when i move it rather than neatly wrapping it up so maybe I'm applying less pressure to the joints?

4 years in my old Dell was dying on all fronts, this is the only part of my mac (other than one foot) to break in any way. Frankly im impressed..
