Terrible Design - Need to replace every year or two

Going on to my third adapter, weak cables not in line with the build quality one expects when you pay a premium price. The cable gauge is too fine for a power cable and there is insufficient strain relief going into the adapter and mag safe cable. The clip for wrapping the cord is what did my second adapter in, causing the outer cabling to tear. Have had alot of laptops over the years and Apple's are the only power adapters I have ever had a problem with.

    Doesn't stay attached, BAD design

Why in the name of all that is holy would Apple revert back to this T-design with weeeeeeeaaaaaak magnets? If I pick up my laptop, the weight of the cord is stronger than the connecting magnets. My 2009 MacBook Power Adapter is going strong and stays plugged in under normal user conditions, why is it that this one is so useless? Would give 0 stars if that was possible.

    Horrible and Expensive to replace

Have had my Macbook air for 3 years and already on my third magsafe adapter. They fray after about year and then i have to fork out $80 for another. I guess the problem has existed for 10 plus years and Apple doesn't seem to care. It doesn't make sense

Frustrating and Irritating to Needlessly Fiddle with the Cord

This is my second MacBook Pro. I have never had an issue with my first Mac and had a standard to compare my new purchase against. If I could give this product 0, I would. In an ideal situation, I would work on my laptop at a desk. But, this is not the case. In reality, I put my Mac on the bed, take it to bed and work or set it on my lap while watching TV. It is one thing for the adapter to disconnect once but, it is constant through its use. The minutest touch will cause a disconnection. It is guaranteed to disconnect if my power source is to the right of the computer connection and I need to trail the cord in front, under or behind the Mac. Or, the biggie, in the groove of working for hours thinking you are plugged in to find the power cord has been disconnected. It is irritating, annoying and frustrating. For what I paid, I would expect the power adapter to stay connected. It is obvious the Mac and power adapter was not subjected to the conditions of daily normal use. Apple Fail!

    Terrible design

I'm on my 3rd supply. They just break so easily on the cable and wow do they get so hot. Really needs re-think - it cannot be just for me to spend £3'300 on a laptop and be on my third power supply. Ridiculous.

    Absolutely awful - Fire hazard

Having been impressed with the MacBook Pro itself I am extremely disappointed with the Magsafe2 85W Power Adapter. This seems to be a fire hazard at the very least, it gets so hot that it has actually burned through the outer wire at the adapter and now exposed the inner wiring. Having looked on the website new ones are priced at £80 which to be honest is completely extortionate and a joke for what it is not to mention the fact the reason I need a new one is no fault of my own. I think this really needs to be looked at for any future models.

    Best Charger Ever!!!!

This charger is the best charger I have ever owned and have saved my Macbook Pro Many times from people tripping over the cable and pulling my laptop instead of the charge just snaps out with the magnetic connection. Plus with the indicator light it lets you know when its charging and when it is done charging. The charger charges my mac from dead to full power in just under half an hour. the cable is just the right length with the ability for you to choose from two different lengths with the attachment of the plug with or without the cable. I have had issues with other chargers getting too hot during charging but the MagSafe 2 adapter barely gets warm. I love this charger and would definitely recommend it!!!!

Apple please make your charges long lasting!

Despite taking care to supply proper power via a spike/ups to the charger and taking care not to break the cable at the start and end, i'm facing component failure in the primary of the charger! i have dell charger used roughly on direct power...no problems at all! Why do i have to shell out 80 dollars or Rs 6600 for a charger when it could be fixed by apple for a nominal amt instead of making the user pay for a new one? This seems to be major money spinner for apple and a deterrent to people going for apple products as the laptop cannot be charged by any other means. PLease renew our faith in apple !!!

Utterly hopeless, and no real solution to date.

Have had Apple computers and hand-held devices since the late 80's, but my new MBP 15" retina display has only been in my possession for 2 years now and I've had to replace the adapter once already - at my own expense no less. At $80 a pop, this is ridiculous and needless. My last MacBook served me well for almost a decade, and I never had to replace the adapter once. What gives Apple? At the very least, you should have replaced my adapter ONCE since I'm still within my 3 years of Apple Care. Maybe other MBP users are made of money, and can just replace their power adapters with no consequence financially. But that is not the case for me. I'm so disappointed! Oh, and that's not even counting the other 2 major issues I've had with this MBP (keyboard and USB port issues). Sigh. Companies just don't care anymore about their customers, including Apple apparently. PLEASE fix this adapter issue!

Does not deserve to be called a LAPtop

The new magsafe2 is an utter piece of junk!! I can't hardly TOUCH my "lap"top without it falling off and FORGET actually using it IN MY LAP!! If I try to use my computer with it in my lap the power cord WILL NOT stay connected - every little bump and movement causes it to fall off. The magnet is SO WEAK that I've thought it was connected when it actually was not - that particular day I had planned to use my computer as a LAPtop, and had put it in my lap, thinking I had a couple hours of charge (at least) when I actually had MINUTES because the charger failed to seat itself properly before.

I ALWAYS buy Apple products and pay a PREMIUM in so doing. In other words, I EXPECT IT TO WORK. "Crashing" isn't a problem WHEN THERE IS NO POWER!!! I'm about DONE with Apple products!! I just don't get why they can't seem to get their act together. I also don't get why EVERY TIME I get an "update" for my iPhone is TOTALLY SCREWS UP my phone . . . that that is another LONG story of dissatisfaction. I wonder how long Apple can survive when they seem so completely devoted to angering their customers!!

    VERY VERY poor quality

The original design and quality was right up there with expected quality, but the new MagSafe 2 cable is terrible quality. Broken and fraying in a number of places. On top of that the the magnet is not strong enough. I cant believe Apple has not sorted this out.

Frayed like every single other apple charging cable

I love apple, but I can't understand why they don't update these thin, delicate charging cables. Mine has predictably frayed at the charging brick, similar to every Apple cable I've ever had. Unlike the iPhone charger however, there is no better alternative on the market for a macbook pro, and spending $79 for such a ludicrously unreliable product is painful. No matter how you transport this thing, it seems sure to break. I've never in my life owned another product in which you have to treat the cable like it's a piece of fine crystal. This should be a simple fix...come on Apple.

    ALMOST BURNT THE HOUSE DOWN

So I noticed my charger was plugged but wasn't charging the computer and then when I plugged it again I smell the burnt rubber. The wire inside it was literally orange! it melted the exterior! I have a studio with a lot of equipment that would cost thousands of dollars if burnt. NOT GOOD.

    Keeps Breaking!

I've had 3 of these 85 W Magsafe 2 chargers for my retina display macbook pro. And the problem for some reason keeps hppening no matter how gentle I treat the charger. They just decided to STOP WORKING. There was no excessive heat problem, there wasn't any burning scent, exposed wire, the cable is in pristine condition and is always stored neatly (rolled wide, never in a tight bundle), hardly ever dropped. I have ZERO clue what made all THREE of them suffer the same problem. I used to have an L charger for an older 2008 macbook, never a problem.

    Seriously dissapointed in this charger.

    Breaks so easily

I'm on my 5th power adapter in three years. I treat them more carefully than a baby now and they still burn out at the exact same point every time. I do have to take it out of my bag and put it back in (which is a painstakingly tentative routine now), but it shouldn't be breaking as fast as this. I have another adapter...but I can't even use it without an adaptor! What's happening to you Apple?? Come back to the light!

I dunno what other people are doing to them...

...but I travel with my MacBook Pro 5 days a week, have done for years, wrapping and unwrapping the cable around the brick twice a day. I've never once had an issue with cables fraying or power supplies failing (likewise for the Mac laptops I've used in a similar fashion for the past 11 years). The only point I'd agree with is that the magnet connection isn't fantastic unless you're using the laptop on a desk, though when it's on my lap it protrudes far enough beyond my legs that it still rarely dislodges.

Stiff and sticky cable, easy to break clips

Power adapter charges fine and I have not found there to be a problem with the magnet as some other reviewers have mentioned. However, the thicker cable is very stiff so it does not roll easily for transport in a case. Also, the smaller cable is really sticky, so much so that it leaves a residue on your fingers and picks up dirt very easily. Not pleasant! Finally, the clips that allow the smaller cable to wind around the adapter for transport break very easily.

These are small details that make the use of a nice laptop much less enjoyable.

    Frayed at the power unit.

I was surprised to see the cord frayed at the power unit to where it started to smoke. This after only 3 years of use. Previous models lasted until... well, forever. The adapter was always used in the office or home, and was not abused in airports, coffee shops, etc. "Designed in California. Assembled in China" Maybe it should be designed in Germany and assembled in California.

    There is no rating ZERO???

Have to buy a new one now, since the cable of the previous one broke near the magnet. Did Apple make this weak point on purpose???
Ahhh, another thing: when the MBP is laying on a soft surface, the cable is continuously disconnecting, as the MagSafe magnet is not strong enough and the T-shape cable forces the unplugging; what an awful design...
