    Excellent DVD player/burner

    • Written by Carl I from PEBBLE BEACH

I bought a pre-owned Apple SuperDrive to use with my 13" MBP. I have used it for more than 50 discs and it has never failed to work well. I'm sure some of the negative reviews will turn off prospective buyers but my experience has been the opposite and I highly recommend it.

Before buying this DVD player I was very hesitant because of all the bad reviews. However, the positive reviewers gave me the confidence to take a chance. After using this player numerous times I cannot fathom why there are so many bad reviews. It is definitely not the product itself but another agenda.

Simply put...this player is a great price and very easy to use. Don't believe all the BS bad "reviews." If you need a DVD player for your Mac get this one.

Where do these one-star critics come from!?

    • Written by David G from OTTAWA

Having read a lot of the most scathing criticisms, I can only comment that most (if not all) of them are written by people who refuse to read the instruction sheets provided with each SuperDrive (or simply can't read them...) or are so inured with their PC's that the simplest Mac functions are beyond them. Sorry. At first, their scathing words made me seriously question the advisability of buying such a defective product SO radically different than the other Apple products I've bought over the years, until I read a piece written by a fellow whose point was that the critics were completely unfamiliar with Mac. It seemed to make sense. Clenching my teeth, expecting the worst, I bought the SuperDrive knowing that if it WERE the junk they describe, I could always take it back.
My personal observation after having ripped my 300+ bought-and-paid-for DVD collection for use with my iTunes: BRILLIANT! EASY! FLAWLESS! FAST!
A quick last word to the virulent critics... read the instruction sheet, then put away the straightened out paper clip you've used for years trying to dislodge stuck DVDs from your last PC DVD drive. Then spend an extra couple of bucks on something that WORKS!

    Works great 4 years later.

    • Written by Andrew A from HUBBARDSTON

Got mine when I initially purchased my Mid-2015 MBP, and it still works great. Not sure what people are having trouble with, I have never had any issue. You burn stuff, then eject the disk, or go to disk utility and hit eject.

    • Written by Michael L from LA MESA

I have read the reviews and decided to buy this unit anyway. I have used it for over two years and NEVER has it failed me. I love this drive. I play video disks and I read disks and I burn disks. - never a coster or an inability to use it successfully. GREAT PURCHASE!!!

    Works Great!

    • Written by Greg L from Littleton

I almost didn’t buy because of all the bad reviews. But after chatting with an apple representative and learning this is the only external cd drive option,I decided to buy it despite all the terrible reviews. Glad I did- I’m not a tech guy, but this was as easy as could be to use. Just insert the cd, follow the prompts on the screen, then select the button on the screen to eject. No problems whatsoever, no idea what all the bad reviews are about, a bit expensive yes, but not out of line compared to any Apple products. Great buy!

    Apple USB SuperDrive

    • Written by Charles N from Salida

Despite nearly being frightened away by the plethora of bad reviews, I bought the unit. Hey, it's an Apple. In 15 years all I've bought is Apple and I have yet to regret doing so. My instincts told me if it was a piece of ****, Apple would not have left it on the market. Long story short: I bought it, it got here when it was promised, I plugged it in and it works fine. Apple... your politics gag me, but your gear is top notch.

    Works for me!

    • Written by Rebecca D from Liverpool

I replaced my 2007 iMac with a 2017 - no built-in drive so I purchased the Superdrive. I plugged in the USB and inserted my music disc. It loaded up immediately and played beautifully. When I was finished, I clicked the eject icon on the screen in iTunes and it popped right out. Each time I've used it, this is exactly what happens. Perfect! I'm glad I didn't heed the bad reviews and gave it a shot.

I imported more 7,000 CDs into iTunes with my SuperDrive before it started having read errors. Over the years it was always fast and looked great next to my MacBook Pro!

    Not a tech dummy

    • Written by Dewayne C from NASHUA

I can see most of the reviews here are coming from people not familiar with tech. I'll make this short and sweet. I haven't purchased this drive but I am leaning more likely towards getting this drive. Most of the reviews here it seems are stemming from people's lack of understanding how Macs and tech ACTUALLY WORKS.

The reason why the drive has no eject button is most likely because if you look on the Mac desktop you will see an icon for the drive. If you right-click with the Magic Mouse you will then see a contextual menu appear. Now here's where it gets complicated. Then drag the arrow of the Magic Mouse down the a title on the menu that says, "EJECT DISC." I know that's a radical concept. You can also open the icon of the hard-drive icon that says, "Macintosh HD" and you will also see off to the left listed in the window pane a list of folders and various other icons, including the Macintosh Icon and the name of any other portable devices you have attached.

Bottom line. If you don't know enough about the tech you are using, then it is no one else's fault but your own. DO NOT go on a website for the company and rage against the machine because you are stuck in the Bronze Age. If you bought Apple products just because you want to come off looking "trendy" and you want to seem awesome for throwing a lot of money away, then you bought them for the wrong reason. All you did was come off looking like a stupid tool. That fact was only reinforced by your stupid reviews where you whined and cried like a child where you all but admitted you didn't know how to use your Mac.

I know how to use Macs and have since I was fourteen. I know how to use Windows based pcs and have for years. I have been using tech since I was seven years old. I know how to custom build computers better and far less than what Best Buy gouges the sheeple for and make them work.

I take that back. After reading these crybaby complaints. I DEFINITELY WILL be purchasing this drive. If I could post a picture, then I'd post of myself using this drive with a smile on my face.

    Excellent product!

    • Written by Liz A from Ottawa

I have read many reviews saying this drive is no good. Hmm, I have had mine since January of 2015 and have ripped literally thousands of CDs and DVDs to my computer, not to mention burning a rather large number for the days I was still using CDs in my cars. I have never had a failure despite the fact I dropped this drive numerous times (I am rather clumsy at times!). Never has it produced a bad disc or failed to read a disc unless it was seriously geezed. I do not see why all the poor reviews. Perhaps your system is not up to snuff, or you are using cheap apps to rip and/or burn discs??? As the old saying goes... Corn goes in, corn comes out. Go home Apple haters. God bless!

    No problems so far

    • Written by Jonathan D from Chico

I've had my Superdrive for a few weeks, and I will gladly change my review if I feel it warrants it. But I have not experienced several issues others are having. One of the common things I've seen in some reviews is the inability to get the disc out of the drive. I have a 2015 MacBook Pro, and the unit has worked flawlessly. I put in a disc and it reads it pretty fast, compared to a third party one I used previously which takes 20 seconds or more to start reading the disc. It opened up itunes very quickly upon reading the music disc.

I eject the disc by highlighting it on the desktop and pushing the typical "Command-E" input. The disc ejects right away every time, within a second or two.

I put in a DVD and it also started up very quickly and had no issues in watching the film.

I haven't tried burning a disc yet, but I don't have any Mac software for doing that as my burning disc programs I prefer are PC only.

Honestly, I'm wondering if people are just having bad luck with trying to use this on older Macs or just Macs that are running too slow because of issues brought on by the user. I don't intend to blame the user necessarily since every situation is different, but it's no out of the realm of possibility. Point is, this product seems to function at a high level of quality for me that I was hoping for from Apple. Just take it as one person's good fortune, I guess.

5 years so far, without issue

    • Written by James C from Philadelphia

I bought a SuperDrive 2 laptops ago and it's still chugging along. Admittedly, it hasn't had heavy use, just burning DVDs now and then. Inexpensive for an Apple product, it's nice to have something that matches the aesthetics of most Macs. Works perfectly with the Apple USB C adapter on my new MBP 15.4.

This SuperDrive has been a real workhorse for me. I thoroughly recommend !

    • Written by Debbie A from Austin

I've had the SuperDrive since 2015 and read many hundreds of dvds with it. Occasionally a disk gets stuck, but I think it's because of the software using the drive or the occasional bad disk, not the SuperDrive hardware itself. It's very easy to remedy - just unplug it, reboot, then reattach the drive. I do think a manual eject on the drive would be a good design improvement. Anyway, I'm buying a 2nd SuperDrive just in case Apple stops making them in deference to internet download technology.

    What's Up?

    • Written by Marion L S from Louisville

I've had this SuperDrive and have been using it heavily for a long time. It has never missed a lick. It is great. I couldn't be happier with it. It's a workhorse and totally dependable. I'm not sure how to account for all the bad experiences that others have had with this model of drive, but I have had a purely positive experience using it. I can only relate my own experience, which has been purely positive.
