When it subtly fails, you won't notice until too late.

    1) Sold to me, as a replacement, under warranty (hmmm), for the compact TC. Within months, notice deteriorating WiFi rates. I blamed it on my ISP. Now, after switching back to the compact TC, that came back to life 24 hrs after purchase of above, I see my WiFi works at advertised speeds.
    2) Randomly, found this TC off line and backups not done, 1st thing before market open. I'd cycle power on all components from ISP gateway, to MacBook Pro. Over year's time, happened with higher frequency. Coincidentally ISP service was finding faults in line to my home.
    3) One morning, instead of a 'sparse bundle' for my primary business MBP, I find all backups gone, and a 'purgeable' file in its place. Not at all purgeable. Then, it just quit responding to Time Machine altogether.
Word to the wise, always have a separate EHD to copy every personal data/files needed to reconstruct one's life. We nearly got to that point. Bigger note, have a NAS RAID1 drive in place.
    4) Fortunately, compact TC, reformatted, came to life, remembered its ID from years before. Sped up initial backups, by running LAN cable directly to TC, from each PC consecutively w/WiFi off (~5 hrs for 400GB total).
    5) Based on Apple's published support and future promotion of TC's, I'm ordering a RAID1 NAS device, that I can also daisy chain EHDs ad infinitum to, from this point forward.

Finally I get the speed i paid for!

This has been the best buy to enhance my network! I am not experiencing the negative review about this device at all. Easy to setup. started to backup my MacBook Pro. To backup 60gb took two hours. Definitely worth it.

    6 Years, going strong

Best thing ever. Has worked brilliantly without an issue. Way better stability and consistency of signal for Wifi. Smooth backups that I've had to use.

    expensive paperweight

After struggling through set-up, it worked for several months, then needed reboot. After reboot, it worked for several months, then needed reboot. After reboot, it worked for several months, then needed reboot. After reboot, it worked for several months, then needed reboot. Getting the idea??

It is recognized in AirPort Utility (I had it placed a few feet from my laptop), I can go through the setup process, but the drive won't connect with Time Machine. I've had enough frustration so I gave up on it and got a larger USB portable drive (although not as convenient as the wi-fi connection, it was a third of the cost of the Time Capsule). Plus, no rebooting every so often.

Although I've never had issues with the Mac laptops I've owned, I supplemented Time Machine with third (CCC) party software, since this $400 kick in the you-know-what reduced my trust in Apple products.

    DESIGNED TO FAIL

The HDD went bad and since the TC was no longer under warranty, I purchased a new HDD with the intention of replacing it myself. I purchased the exact same HDD as was in there from the factory. The electronics inside are designed as to unnecessarily require the removal of several plugs in order to remove the HDD. The circuit board connections on two of the three wires that must be removed do not actually have connectors (the indicator light and the cooling fan). They have extremely delicate and extremely small individual connections on the circuit board (seven total) and of course, I broke connectors on both while trying to remove the wires from the circuit board. To avoid this problem, Apple could have simply made the wires longer so they could be moved aside far enough to remove the HDD, or they could have routed the wires differently to eliminate the potential problem altogether. Currently, the TC is working, however I have no indicator light (not that big of a deal) and I have no cooling fan (this causes an error in AirPort Utility). To hopefully keep it from overheating, I left the bottom cover off and now have the TC standing upside down to allow the heat to escape (I'm sure it's just a matter of time before the heat is too much and it burns out, which leaves me with the choice of spending yet another $400 or going with another brand). I'm very disappointed with Apple on this one!

    okay but not great

it was great while it lasted but it died a violent death. Worked perfectly for 4 years then started overheating and making awful noises. Tech support told me the life span was usually 4 to 7 years. Funny they never mention that when you buy it.

    Works as it should

I have new to my 3TB two 1TB Time Capsules, this 3 TB Capsule is nice, the backup of devices, the web connection and all it should do, works with no big problems.
Since I use them behind my router i have a secure WIFI/WLAN proving and a nice quite and secret backup of all my apple devices.
Thats is really a great solution. One just has to stay inside the apple family, no hybrid solutions and no mix.
Since I kicked all D-Link and other wanna be Routers out, my WiFI Home network stays stable and reachable for ALL mobile, and all TV Streaming and ALL Music streaming in all 4 BR!
(Although I leave a FRITZ BOX from Germany at the etisalat LAN direct access. Best Firewall and protection.) So all trouble in the net is either from etisalat hick-ups or because one TimeCapsule needs a Firmware update. But then the Apple WiFi Airport Utility flares up and shows the trouble maker...

    Reboot and overheating errors.

Had the unit a few months and it started dropping connections with the internet and local machines. DIscovered the indicator on the front was Yellow all of the time.

Used the Airport app on my Mac to find out it was overheating all of the time and forcing near constant reboots. This unit was not running in a hot or closed location.

I called for support and the rep asked what I did to break the unit because no one ever has problems with it. He then told me that my problem was customer created and I did 't qualify for support!!!

Between this and my $300 beats wireless headphones breaking maybe buying 'Apple' products isn't such a good idea anymore...

    Almost excellent

This is the third time capsule in 6 years. My second 3tb unit. Is almost excellent. Setup is so easy. The only complaints from me is the USB 2.0 speed and the non Apple support to access the time capsule from iOS devices.
Wifi speed is very fast and you can add visitors network too.
5ghz also works fine with a long coverage too.
I always used all the time capsule products with belkin power outlet to ensure damage free from electricity network.
You can buy this with confidence, and I hope the discontinued rumors will be just rumors.
I add 4 stars for missing options I mention above.

    Great must own!

I have the time capsule and its great. I got the 3TB because you can't have enough storage. Step up was easy as you would expect from apple and it is compatible with verizon fios.l

    Keeps getting worse

Half the distance of my old router and I have never been able to read files on any USB drive I attached not to mention that the USB port is USB 2.0 in 2016 so Apple could make an extra nickel on us.

As of Yosemite, OS X/Max OS doesn't even see the drive.

    OK but flawed product

I purchased the 3TB Time Capsule in July 2015. Worked fine the first few months. Three times in the past year, I get a message "Time Machine completed a verification of your backups. To improve reliability Time Machine must create a new backup for you". This has happened twice this week alone. A full backup can take 8-10 hours, so this is not optimal. All previous backups are lost. Fortunately I generate a second backup on a different (non-Apple) external drive, but if this product worked as expected, I wouldn't need to.

    Extremely difficult to configure

I am so disappointed. Having been a very big fan of apple products I have recently opted to use the airport timecapsule to both act as my time machine back up and router. Basically non of my non-apple wireless products will connect to the internet, ( Bose Soundtouch and 4 TVs -Smasung and Sony) . I believe there is one 'big IP conflict' going on, but i just don't have the technical skill to solve the problems, so its been an extremely expensive mistake to drop my simple, but very effective Tricolor router, for the Apple product. If anyone is considering this produce and isn't fully technically competent int he filed of IP address processes etc then don't!!

    love love love mine

this is amazing, i really want to get one more as i always like to have at least 2 backups.

its super simple to use and set up, but the mine thing is that it JUST WORKS like all of apples products do.

    wifi is super quick too

    but one you'll love it

    Started strong and degraded quickly

I've had this less than two years and now, I'm fortunate to have a span of more than a few days where my wireless connectivity doesn't completely tank to little to nothing. Fortunately, I got a good deal on this so I'm not quite as jaded as others may be, though still annoyed that I'm already looking at other options after such a short period.

I'm an Android user personally so it has also been incredibly frustrating that, even for a product that is supposed to be used by any and all, WiFi enabled devices, I have to borrow my girlfriends Macbook/iPhone to make any adjustments or do any troubleshooting. This is Apple though so that issue wasn't the least bit surprising.

The bottom line is, a good router should be just that, a router. As is the case in many other products, when you start to bundle things together, the result is often a subpar product that can't excel at any of its features.

Do yourself a favor and buy a router that excels at just being a router. I'm looking at the Asus 3200 myself though there are plenty of other options out there.

easy to handle , but limited ....

I use my TC 3TB in the Bridge mode and as back up drive. The main Router has a better setup and more functions( FritzBox 7490 ).
The Wlan is fast - but normal for AC Mode. I also use an external 3TB Lan HD as backup for the TC. This setup is very fast and reliable, the TC has a good throughput rate even with several clients.

I miss the personnel Cloud function on the TC - I would love to have my "iCloud" at home.
