    Very disappointing

Expensive and VERY SLOW. WiFi is slow, very slow and the transfer of data through a network cable is extremely slow. 11 hours to backup 770GB data from Macbook Pro. Really feel ripped off by this.

Fails in 3 years: hard drive and now router function

A couple months ago the hard drive failed and only 3 years after purchase, and now lately the router itself fails. Perhaps routing fails because running without a working hard drive, but unlikely. The strict limitations of managing this devices, limited capabilities, and lack of updates, make me never want to see one of these again. There hasn't been an update since I bought this one, so not sure why Apple doesn't update this device regularly - at least let me buy a new one with better features and a better hard drive. If you expect superior products from Apple, which is reasonable, this is not one of them.

Good wireless access point however ....

I bought it couple years ago (actually two of them) and it used to work great, no problems whatsoever however after last firmware update it disconnects all my wireless devices 2-3 times a week! All you can do then is restart the time capsule. Please fix it Apple as its not reliable anymore.

I have learned to trust Time Capsule backups

After years spending too much time and effort ensuring I had a bulletproof backup I went with what had proven to be the most reliable and easy methods I had discovered. I now run two tower Time Capsules permanently attached to my work station(one connected by CAT 6,the other wifi connected in a separate room). I rotate three older flat TC's to two offsite locations(one weekly, one monthly). I have done multiple full restores(couple dozen over the years) to test the backups and was always able to get a good restore(sometimes with a bit of difficulty but most times it was easy). I also run Backblaze for online backup. Expensive-yes. Overkill? For the price of a middling computer I have made the odds of having a valid backup regardless of what happens very high. Setup has been harder than it should be and I have had problems with the major yearly software updates but the last couple of years that is no longer the case since Apple made changes in the connectivity process in one of those updates. Ongoing reliability has been very high over the several years I have been running multiple TC's and the last two years the reliability has been rock solid. It is close to the point of it just works and I can forget about it knowing I will get alerts if the process is interrupted. One less thing to worry about. Cheap at the price.

    An overpriced gadget that works...

I've been using this TC for almost 2 years now, it is installed in the basement and the signal is something close to strong even in the second floor.
Is this device easy to install? It is. plug and just works in a few seconds.
Speed? well if you have the newest mac that take advantage of the wireless "ac" you will notice a considerable bump on the speed.
Is this device reliable?. While I had some issues of random disconnection once in a while, nothing that "restart base station" from Airport utility on OS X doesn't fix. In terms of hard drive, where the very high price lies on, it is a Seagate, if you trust on this brand go ahead. After a few unfortunate accidents where my data was compromised I take no chances and I keep a WD duo 4TB to backup this backup. Call me exaggerated, but losing years of pictures ain't funny!.
I've recently bought an apple TV and the feature of airplay really sucked. I've got an old airport extreme from eBay that extended my network, but even that the signal wasn't strong enough. Sad. I've returned the apple TV.
Would I buy this again? probably no... some used airport extreme and a more reliable hard drive bought separately would be cheaper and better.

    Poor range & Inconsistent connection:

In order to maintain connectivity you will find yourself cycling wifi on and off on your devices throughout the day. Better to use something else or wait until Apple corrects whatever is wrong with the firmware on these.

Not Reliable - You had ONE Job!

I've owned this for almost a year. I bought it as a backup solution for our Macbooks, but in that time it has twice complained about an issue, lost all the backups in TimeMachine due to some error, and had to start over. Luckily, the laptops stayed functional the whole time and we were able to restart the backup process, but that meant that the history over months was gone. I do development for a living, so it can be important to use TimeMachine to go back the previous state of a project or back to something that was deleted because you thought it wasn't important.. point being that the value in TimeMachine is being able to go back to a previous state, and once it re-starts your backups from scratch, you loose ALL that history.

Then I noticed it randomly rebooting last week every once in a while. Today we came home and noticed we had no internet, and that the device refused to turn on (no on light), though it did make the slightest vibration when being plugged in. So now, it not only doesn't work for backups, but the internet doesn't work either. Luckily, we still had the old router and I could plug that in and at least get connected (and use my laptop to connect to apple support). Dealing with support was OK, but I now need to take time out of my day to call and schedule an appointment to bring it in to the Apple Store (Best Buy in our case).

These devices are very expensive (compared to a good router and a 3TB drive purchased separately), and aren't really that complex and the whole point is to have a reliable backup solution. However it doesn't deliver on that promise IMO if it randomly looses you backups, and then stops working after less than a year. I wish the TimeMachine protocol were an open standard so that I could purchase a product from another vendor with better build quality. I also think they should ship with a thunderbolt connector (and cable) for a time when I'd actually need to recover from a backup. Trying to do that recovery over WiFi would take many hours (20+), so you might loose a days worth of work waiting to get back up and running.

Don't buy this if you use a Motorola/Arris SURFboard cable modem

I bought the AirPort Time Capsule - 3TB because I wanted a Time Capsule and I wanted improved range and speed for my Wi-Fi as I was disappointed in the SBG6850's throughput. The Time Capsule functionality has worked well for me which is why I gave it two stars rather than one.

The Wi-Fi performance fast and it has good signal strength. That's the good news. The bad news is that I sufferred a year of frequent connectivtiy issues that were very hard to diagnose. If you read the Apple forums, you will discover a reaccuring theme of unresolved issues around the ATC dropping internet connectivity. I eventually proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that the issue was the ATC and not my ISP or cable modem. So I turned off the ATC's Wi-Fi and replaced the functionality with a separate Wi-Fi router. Now have solid Internet connectivty and an extremely expensive backup drive.

Good concept, but why no Thunderbolt?

Can't believe they didn't include a Thunderbolt port on this back up device. Glaring omission that would have made this a very good product. When you are doing a large backup over Wifi, takes WAY longer than it would have with Thunderbolt. Apple seems increasingly lazy with its designs.

Love it, but it's got it's it's quirks

Seamless, invisible, reliable, inane. This product serves well and transparently as both a WIFI router and backup. It's the second iteration of Time Capsule that I've relied upon for years. Yet, in the two instances they've each been called upon to save the day, they just didn't quite deliver. Each failure was accompanied by a permanent "Disk Temporarily Unavailable" notice. These occasions were hair-raising and tense, and after days of round-about-work-arounds I was able to retrieve my data. Imagine that, my data actually coming back to me from a device that was purchased to do just that. Sounds easy enough, but this product just doesn't deliver when it's needed. Either that, or I've had some pretty lousy luck.

The process by which success came was circuitous, doubtful, annoying, and tedious... All words I've never used to describe an Apple product.

As much as I like Apple and the concept of this product, I'll be foregoing it shortly in favor of a different strategy.

Intermittent shutdown problems...Latest version has engineering problems!

I have had Apple routers and Time capsules for many years and until recently the experience has been mostly good. However, that said, I am very disappointed with the performance of my second 3TB TC purchased in late 2014. I have had to return and exchange it twice now and am currently "testing" the third unit.

It would appear there is a serious hardware or firmware problem that leads the device to power down intermittantly. It can power down once or twice a day sometimes, or may go for a week or more just fine then quite. The only way to reset it is unplug and replug the power cable and it sputters back to life.

The sign of failure, apart from the obvious is the LED light goes off (while still plugged in).

Apple have been pretty good and quick about providing a new unit. I am surprised though they cannot seem to read or access the TC diagnostics on board which supposedly get sent back to the mother ship also? Looking into the logs it is, and should be possible for the techs to see if thermal or other factors tripped the unit OFF.

Oh well..I'll continue testing #3 and hope for the best this time. I think its most likely the latest engineering version thats at fault. Its worth noting my original 3TB TC purchased in 2010-2011 works just fine and has never given any problems.

FANTASTIC PIECE OF EQUIPMENT - EVERYONE SHOULD OWN ONE!

This is the most FANTASTIC piece of equipment I have ever used. Automatic back-up and a very powerful router. I also use Apple Airport Express's to receive extended WiFi reception in my garden and swimming pool house. My fibre speed is 1Gb, which I can easily receive thirty plus meters from my property. Everyone should own/use an Apple AirPort Time Capsule! Thank you Apple...

I've owned three - and all of them switch themselves off.

Yes, I know - triumph of optimism over experience, but I really have tried three of these, and all of them have taken to switching themselves off. After the second one failed, I suspected an electrical power problem, and so bought a UPS to protect the TC. It made no difference; the TC will still switch itself off, after a period that has varied from ten days to under 15 minutes. Disconnecting and then reconnecting the power lead always restarts the device, but I need it to be reliable.

    Worth it's weight in gold

I've just lost a computer, the one I do my full time work on, which was a disaster. I have a Time Capsule, which has been ticking over in the corner of the room for the last year or so. When the new machine arrived, I plugged it into the Time Capsule and did a full restore, and it was as if I had never been without a computer, it had every single file, setting, application from the moment I lost my old computer.

Anyone who values the content of their computers needs to have something like this, as the moment when your computer is gone is an awful feeling unless you have it backed up completely. The Time Capsule has worked faultlessly and when the absolute worst happened, it's saved the day. Great product.

Do not touch this piece of junk

I have been using Apple products since 1983 for business & private use. This would have to be the absolute worst Apple product that I have used & it is disgraceful that it carries the Apple name. Absolute waste of money, time and effort.
Slow, erratic, unreliable, poor support, made no difference to network. Ignore the starry eyed 5 star reviews and read the one star reviews.
About to replace this expensive piece of junk with an external hard drive. Will avoid all Apple accessories in future.

    No Vlan tagging support

My provider for optic fibre internet in Malaysia only uses vlan tagging . Could apple come up with a solution for this incompatibility ? ATC does not have that feature! Btw my providers are Unifi & Maxis, and I hate bridging the ATC to my current router...

Buying this device was a HUGE mistake

I've just purchased the 3TB Airport Time Capsule model. Setup was easy. Then begins the nightmare. The Time Capsule keeps disconnecting on its own. Trying to access the Time Capsule Disk from my Mac Book Pro hangs/freezes the Finder. Internet also disconnects on its own. I have to pull the power cord to turn off and restart the device after every few minutes. Airport Utility app is USELESS, it has very minimal options.
