    Overheating problems.

Worked great for one year. then conveniently started making lots of noise. I found out that the unit was or thought it was overheating. now, about 14 months after I bought it, starts 'overheating' off and on several times a day. My suggestion to you is take it in as soon as you hear it start making load noises. Or, if you are out of warranty, you can take the bottom off and blow out any dust that is in it with a high pressure air gun. It helped a little bit.

    solid

I have 2 of these operating now, and one older airport extreme, at 3 different locations. I have had to restart the older of the two later model airport extremes a couple of times, which was not a problem. I have had 3 of these in the past, which I updated for speed and range because they got old. They still work. One is an ancient plastic knob that I re-used as an extender for awhile in a less security- minded time. I've used other routers as well, which were also good and much less expensive, but I use these because they are reliable and simple, and performance is good with all my apple stuff. I am about to update the one older airport extreme (about 7 or 8 years old), which is in Asia on static IP, because I'm recently experiencing slowing internet and suspect it may be afflicted with the memory exploit that has recently been pointed out on older Broadcom wi-fi appliances. I got a performance upgrade when I installed the new firmware on that router, but it slowed down again, possibly due to the IP being static, and I don't feel like restarting it often to reset the memory. It still works fine, though. Performance also may be improving with the security updates apple has been rolling out in the last couple of weeks.

I'm not a huge fan of apple the Company, except for my 2013 mac pro and genius bar friends. I use its products because they are strong and are easier to protect from worms and viruses, in my opinion. I use them because I am lazy and not super smart. So far, the airport extremes have lived up to my perception of reliability and strength (and expense). I saw some critical ratings, so I thought I'd post about my experience in case someone is worried about it. Maybe some bad components slipped through QA, but that isn't something I've seen yet. My one criticism is that these routers are a little too simple, and do not provide the cool admin options for network security and extension that are standard on less expensive routers, if you want to tweek things.

    AirPort Extreme Great Product

I have a 2400SQ 2 storey home and purchased my first AirPort Extreme roughly 3 years ago and its been very reliable and provided great speed and range. The Router lives in our basement, as our home is smart wired and our Cable Modem resides there. With the addition of multiple Wifi Speakers and our office being on the second floor I wanted to extend the signal. I set the second unit up, upstairs connected via ethernet with Aiport Utility in roughly 10 minutes. Its set up is easy, its performance is great, its very ascetically pleasing and I hight recommend it. I have all Apple devices and the ones that operate on 802.11AC are getting download speeds of 200MPS at the very far end of my back yard. I'm not sure where the 1 star reviews are coming from.

    Easy and Reliable

I just looked and I bought mine in January of 2014 and it has been working almost flawlessly since.
I add the "almost" because on four or five occasions in the last 3 years it had to be reset, this could be due to my ISP also.
This has been a very reliable wireless router. It provides a strong single throughout my 1200 sq ft condo.

    Yellow flashing light

For the first 6 months my Airport Extreme worked great. Out of the blue, it started dropping the signals and the yellow light comes on. This happens about once a week and I unplug it and start over. This seems to have started after I downloaded the system update 10.11.6. I'm going to update to the new version and see if that helps. Still, I shouldn't be having this problem and my internet provider agrees. Otherwise I like the router and plan to keep it

    Best router I've ever owned.

I got my iMac and Apple Extreme router in Dec. 2013. Here it is over 3 years later and both devices are working wonderfully. I've had various routers for 26 years and this is the best one so far. My internet provider is Xfinity and I rarely lose the wifi connection. As long as Xfinity is up all my networked devices have great and fast wireless connections via 2.2Ghz, and a 5Ghz channel as well as a guestnet channel at 2.2Ghz all with download speeds of 120mbps. The signal for the 2.2 channel easily goes through 3 walls to the frontyard where I still get 20-40 mbps, and my tenant in the backyard studio 50 ft away from the router gets a strong 50mbps signal. I use no extenders. Did I say I'm happy ;-)

    Limited and constrictive

Understanding the basics of how networks work, this device does not offer much stability or customization. I have tried multiple times to set up an extender that is not an Apple product and of course it was not compatible, as far as security goes it is fine. Even under the advanced settings there is not a lot to work with, I can barely view what devices are on my network. In addition to this, if I did not want someone on my network I do not have the power to kick them off even as admin, which is very disappointing.

    Does what it says

I picked this up as I couldn't run ethernet to the AppleTV which was only downloading 10mbps over Wifi n.
There was also lag with other devices averaging 30mbps.

Installed this with a few clicks, and was humming along at 76mbps, which is the SAME speed when using ethernet!
    AppleTV improved to 65mbps.

    Issue resolved.

    Easy set up and fast

Recently switched my service and they gave me a new modem (TC8715D) and my old router didn't work. Since we have a 4k TV I decided to buy this as the other routers seemed to be around the same price and were not beam forming. I picked this up after a recommendation from a friend and I couldn't have been happier. We get full bars and fast across our place. TV loads faster than ever and no buffer!

Apple AirPort Extreme Model A 1521 Bast Station

Whilst this may work well in an all Apple environment this device is NOT compatible with Telstra WIFI modems if used as a range extender. It was sold to me by my local JB HIFI store and I was told it would work. They were wrong, it does not work. I wasted 4 hours of my life trying to get it to work and then on the phone with Apple. Apple have gone out of their way to make it difficult for non Apple users. The device is useless. The Apple tech I dealt with even admitted Apple make it super hard for people in an attempt to move them across to an all app Apple environment. That's reprehensible!

3rd AirPort Extreme in the last 5 years

Got the AirPort Extreme after my last one stopped working in 2015. Now the fan is constantly running and a message says it is overheating, yet it is cool to the touch. Reading the forums, it seems this is a common problem. Wifi still works for the time being but it appears its days are numbered until the fan finally stops working. I really want to love this product, but reliability is a definite problem.

Great for about a year n a half.

Great for about a year and a half then constantly had to reset. So frustrating.
Past warranty now and doesn't work at all.
Very disappointed. Tried Apple support and they couldn't figure it out either.
Threw the thing in the garbage. I'll be shopping elsewhere.

ABSOLUTE BEST HUB FAST AND POWERFUL

MY LAST AIR PORT EXTREME LASTED 10 YEARS BEFORE I REPLACED IT, NEVER A PROBLEM OR A HICK UP. WE HAVE THREE APPLE TV'S 4 COMPUTERS 5 IPHONES AND 2 IPADS, TWO PRINTERS AND 5 KINDLES IN USE AND NEVER A BURP OR A HICK-UP, SET UP WAS A SNAP, CHARTER COULD LEARN A THING OR THREE ABOUT NETWORK GEAR FROM APPLE, WE HAVE GONE THROUGH 4 OR FIVE ROUTERS FROM CHARTER AND THE AIR PORT KICKS DUPPA, CHARTER STILL ISNT AS GOOD AS THIS UNIT IS. NOW I JUST NEED TO GET SOMEONE IN THE FAMILY TO GET ME A NEW IMAC, 10 YEARS WITHOUT A PROBLEM IS HARD TO BEAT, YES THEY COST MORE BUT YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.

    Best router ever!

I had a different brands of routers installed in my house and paid technicians way too much, yet nothing worked well, and if it did work not for long. All the routers I used had connectivity issues after a few months and I had to pay technicians again to fix it. Until I bought AirPort Extreme (and multiple Express). I setup the router on my own very easily and for over a year and a half did not have any problems whatsoever. This is the most stable router in the market (in my opinion) and it is sad for Apple to stop developing it because I surely would have bought the newer version! Still an amazing router and will keep it till it dies.

Just lost my third apple Airport in 6 years

They look nice, work OK indoors, but not outdoors (> 10 m away from the house). But the reliability is terrible. The latest AE lasted only 18 months, even shorter than the previous models. With the previous flat models I saved the disk drives and got them fitted in a new enclosure with power supply, which cost me $ 75/pce. The drives still work! But the Apple bit is very disappointing. This is the last AE I will buy. I am getting generally tired of Apple gear, as my iPhone 6S has battery problems. Does Apple have a manufacturing quality problem?

Incredible Improvement over Airport Extreme 2nd edition

I purchased my original Airport Extreme (v2 - big flat thing) many years ago, and it worked like a champ since day one. So good in fact that I never found a reason to upgrade. After hearing rumors that Apple may not continue to manufacture the Airport and new models, I looked at the reviews for this much newer, tower-like model. I was interested in possible performance increase. Went to the store and picked it up. Set-up was plug and play, automatically transferred over my network settings using airport utility. I have a 100 mbps Comcast internet connection, and was pulling ~50 mbps on average over wifi from my older Airport. After plugging this in I was blow away by the speed test, coming in at over 150 mbps over WiFi. Incredible. Also, 4500 sq ft. house, including basement. I pull over 60 mbps in the underground basement, with the Extreme located in upstairs bedroom. My prior airport barely reached the basement, and connectivity was iffy, ~5-10 mbps. Overall, well worth the investment if you're running an older version, and if you have a large house, are in a congested wi-fi area, or have fast internet, but LAN wiring throughout the house isn't an option. Couldn't be more happy with this, don't listen to negative reviews...

    Disappointed

Purchased my AirPort Extreme September 2015.

I had been delighted with it, so easy to setup and great coverage.

However today it went faulty. It will no longer work as a wifi network and disappears from finder after 5 minutes.

It is only 15 months old. I've just taken it back to where I bought it from and they say Apple only guarantees for a year. This item should last much much longer. I will try an Apple Store tomorrow.

Please keep making this great router!

Sad to hear rumors that Apple will not making the Airport Extreme in the near future. After I heard this, I bought this latest version, and I have been very happy with the easy setup and extremely fast transfer speeds. I have been very happy with the reliability of my previous Extremes. I am getting 240 Mbps download speeds with Xfinity Blast Pro, and the range is much better than my previous router. Buy this router before they stop making them!
