    Blacking out intermittently

As other reviewers have commented, this adapter has been intermittently "blacking out" when using the HDMI port. I also have the latest software update installed but still experiencing this. I hope Apple Support has a solution for this, as my brand new early-2016 Macbook is pretty useless if it can't support a external monitor!

Intermittent USB, video dropouts & massively expensive

Very expensive for what it is and bearing in mind the price tag I do feel that it is a complete rip off. I don't mind paying top price for stuff that is well made and going to last for ages, but this just does not feel like it will.

I have had it for 4 days now and the USB connection to my keyboard and mouse has become intermittent. Also, my HDMI connected Screen randomly flashes off sometimes.

Really disappointing and effectively takes the shine off the Macbook which is connected to, as this is my main machine I need the external monitor, mouse and keyboard so I can work off it all day..

Come on apple where have the standards gone..!?

    Worthless

I've gone through 3 of these already, on the first 2, the charge-thru didn't work, so I couldn't use it with a second peripheral. Now the 3rd has stopped working reliably. Can't wait for a company that cares to come up with an alternative.

Not working with external HDD USB 3.0 after sleep

Often it cannot recognize external HDD with usb 3.0 connector after sleep with connected power supply over usb-c multiport. Then my external HDD is absolutely impossible to detect. I tried to unplug the mutiport and close the macbook and it did not help. The only solution is to restart Macbook and the exeternal HDD is visible again. Quite annoying!

    Useful necessity that won't last

This dongle works and is a must-have for the MacBook since it does not feature 2 usb-c ports.

Although it works, this dongle-gate is likely to break in about 6 months. Bending of the short cable causes connectivity in terms of power and usb to eventually be intermittent. Therefore, hold on to your receipt so Apple can give you a new one, and possibly buy more than one. Just one more headache.

Designing a dongle that lasts is apparently not possible since not even Apple can do it. To avoid dongle problems, do not purchase a MacBook with less than 4 usb-c ports :)

The other thing we would want to see is native DisplayPort support, so we possibly could have an external 4k @ 60 Hz display. Most tvs have hdmi, but in terms of computers, hdmi is an inferior technology.

    A necessary expense...

Not sure what everyone else is referring to when experiencing trouble with this...maybe they are, but I have had zero problems with it. After trying two non-apple adapters that were supposed to be identical in function to this one, neither worked, with different monitors, different HDMI cables, everything. They simply did not work as designed. While this one is twice the price, it works as advertised, without any problems, and was even updated when I plugged it in for the first time. Don't waste your money on other non-apple adapters...learn from my mistakes.

    Works decently well

Just a little pricey for what it is, although perhaps that's not unexpected.

    0 stars if I could

This is likely the worst Apple product I've ever used.

My 4K monitor would constantly flicker or shut off when connected to this adapter. It couldn't keep a picture on it for more than a few seconds before it shut down. When I switched to a new USB-C hub, it hasn't flickered once.

The USB port on the adapter wouldn't stay live after the computer woke back up from sleep. I'd have to unplug the USB and plug it back in.

The cable is very short so that if you have the Macbook on a stand it has an ugly white brick sticking out of the side with no way to stash it.

I would not buy this or recommend it at all.

    Terrible - does not work

My logitech webcam doesn't work through this adapter -- the video is glitchy, and the audio is really low pitch.

Even transferring files from my GoPro is terribly glitchy. It causes my GoPro to crash mid-transfer.

It's like the devices aren't getting enough power or something.

    Very slow transfer rate

I plugged WD HDD the rate of transfer is very slow. Though it is charging and transferring the data at the same time.
One bad design. If I disconnect or connect the power (USB C) to adapter. It disconnect the hard drive from PC.
It could have better design and working.

    Does not recognise USB3 drive

I bought this alongside my MacBook so that I could backup my Mac. I now discover that this adapter is not compatible with USB 3.0 drives. Disappointed that this isn't mentioned on the packaging, nor was the information volunteered when I bought it.

USB-C Adapter is a poor solution and product

While initially I liked the concept of 'one port fits all' for power, data, and video, I now regret my decision to buy the MacBook and wish I had separate ports. First having to carry the adapter around is painful and I need multiple adapters. Secondly, I was trying to update the adapter and it did not work even after doing it 5-6 times. Thirdly, after reading the other reviews I realized my USB backup drive finally works if I unplug the power when connecting it through the adapter to my MacBook! Poor design and execution on this product.

This simply doesn't work reliably - but what are the alternatives?

This product is essential to charging your MacBook at the same time as using another external device. i.e using an additional larger screen in the office, or presenting via an HDMI cable.

But it doesn't work. It's not totally broken because it has worked before and occasionally springs to life.

There are obviously compatibility issues with this product. Apple has acknowledged this and released a software update to fix it... but it's erratic as to whether it works. I have it plugged in now, in fact. And no charge is going to my computer (it is when the power cable is plugged in directly - so it's not the power cable, and it's not my laptop) and no source is acknowledged via the HDMI cable.

However it sometimes works... 20% of the time perhaps. I might shut down my computer and start again. It might start working... it might not. Meanwhile, there are a number of identical Macbooks in the office, using the USB-C adaptor and some work fine. Some don't.

It's EXTREMELY frustrating for such an essential extension for the MacBook to not work. I now have to work with massive spreadsheets on this tiny screen and I'm unable to present to the wider business using a second screen/TV. This is £1400 piece of hardware, that NEEDS this extension not to work in isolation. It's unacceptable and Apple is doing nothing about it and providing no information on how it's being addressed.

I don't know how to advise other buyers - You need it if you want to plug in external things... but it can stop working at any time.

    What a disappointment

Just so horrible to have to plug that thing into my macbook !!! Until now it was working .... but after having to update (forced to do it) my usb-c does not work anymore !!!! I have to reboot my Mac every time I want to use it!!!!!!! such a bad experience. I'm really thinking to change it for a PC/Windows..........

I am sick of the unreliability of Apple chargers

I bought this adapter explicitly to be able to charge my computer while utilizing a USB port. Well the stupid USB-C port doesn't work! It is INCREDIBLY frustrating to have to jiggle the cable "just so" to get the charge to work - which only helps sometimes. This is the same issue with iPhone chargers. UGH.

    Limited Application

This adapter is a great idea. However, while it worked with my external backup drive it does not work with the ASUS BM169B+ external monitor. This monitor is fantastic with HD resolution and a nice wide aspect screen. It is a USB driven device with no external power needed to the monitor. I miss the ability to attach the power cord while working with the screen. Not sure how fast it will drain the battery without power to the MacBook but if Apple solves this compatibility problem I"ll be back.

What was Apple thinking? 1 star because I can't select zero

The MacBook Retina obviously needs a reliable solution to provide access to multiple peripherals and this dongle isn't the answer. I haven't purchased this product and don't see how I can since it simply doesn't do what it needs to. It's antiquated out of the box and won't provide the solutions that I, and clearly many others, require and downright need. A suitable product should have been included with the MB Retina in the box! I'm disappointed with Apple about this. I love my MacBook Retina, but it's lacking in connectivity solutions for multiple peripherals. This product isn't the solution and Apple needs to hurry up and get us one. This truly isn't rocket science guys! I don't know if Apple's ever done a recall before, but this is a prime candidate for such a process. It doesn't appear to be causing anyone any physical injury, but it's without a doubt hurting a LOT of pocketbooks and wallets. Be embarrassed and ashamed for putting your customers in this position Apple!
