    Garbage Product

My 2016 macbook won't work with any external monitor without consistent flickering. I've tried multiple adapters and screens with no success. Total fail Apple!

HDMI Not Working (Flaky at best. Hopefully it is a software issue)

HDMI no longer works with either of my two monitors. Hopefully this is just a software issue (maybe with recent update) but until it gets resolved HDMI output will be useless. I am hoping the actual adapter quality is good but at the same time it is not helpful when the HDMI output does not work. Please fix as others are having the same issue and I am guessing once the HDMI issue gets fixed the adapter will not have horrible reviews.

Constant HDMI issues and video flickering renders the adapter unusable

Connecting USB-C Digital AV multiport adapter to a MacBook 12 retina, 2016 running 10.12.2. Adapter seems to work ok for power and standard USB. However, I've had noting but issues with the HDMI connection to external monitors. There is a video reset or flicker every few seconds making the adapter nearly impossible to use.

    Piece of Junk

After so much troubleshooting, I finally realized it's this stupid dongle that keeps ejecting my external drives and disconnecting my monitor every time my 15" MBP 2016 goes into sleep mode. If you can, wait for a third party to develop a better version of this dongle that doesn't come packed with bugs. shame on you, apple.

    Utter garbage

This product is a piece of junk. Tried using it with my WD My Passport Ultra 3TB external drive. The adapter kept randomly disconnecting my drive every few minutes. Returned this cable the same day I bought it shaking my head at how this thing is still on the market. Never going to buy without reading the reviews first ever again.

kernel panic and gpurestart after sleep on 15" MBP 2016 touch bar

not sure if it's this adapter, the Mbp itself, or MacOS 10.12.2. Ever since I started using this with my Asus PA279Q (2560*1440) over HDMI, it gives me random freezes (screen blacks out, touchbar not responsive, had to force shutdown), and kernel panics when I wake up the laptop.

to be fair, it might be an issue of the laptop itself, but I find the chances of getting this situation much higher with this adapter attached.

I use the laptop mostly in clamshell mode connected to the monitor with this adapter

hdmi to infocus projector will not work

New MacBook Pro Touch Bar 15 inch 2.7 w/512gig will not work with our InFocus projector. I have rebooted with it in out...tried sleep. The display blinks but laptop will not recognize the projector. There is a VGA option...but that doesn't work either. My old 2011 MBP 17inch worked flawlessly. I have been an Apple advocate for a long time and choose the brand because it "just works". Love my new MBP touch bar...but I need a solution buying Apple TV and spending even more is not a solution.

This Adapter will shave years off your life

In what has quickly become the norm with Apple, this adapter is flat-out awful. They took our USB's away only to replace them with this god-awful *** that refuses to work with any USB external drive. Very slow delay in transfer speeds, IF you're lucky enough to get the HDD to be recognized with this silly dongle. It's unfortunate to see the quality assurance of Apple products go down the drain, with each new iteration of "dongle". It's pretty obvious why Consumer Reports won't back what Apple considers a "new flagship" in laptops. you can't even get your return on investment, without cussing out your new, shiny white dongle (while experiencing worse battery life than it's predecessor) Shame!

    Mac Doesn't Charge.

I bought this adapter to extend the use of the USB-C port on my Mac. The idea was to connect the adapter to the computer, connect my HDMI cable, USB stick AND charger cable to it.

Turns out that if you connect the charger cable to the adapter and the adapter to the computer ... the computer will not charge. If you connect the charger to the computer directly, it will charge.

Interesting how the item description says you can connect the charging cable to it so it charges the computer ... when it clearly doesn't. $75 completely wasted.

I bought two of these and they both behave the same.

Will not maintain connection to my USB A attached external hard drive

I bought this adapter not only for the HDMI port but also to be able to keep my USB A style external hard drive connected while charging the laptop. When the hard drive is plugged into the USB A port on this adapter it continually disconnects and leaves the mounted volume in inconsistent states. If I use a cheap USB-A to USB-C adapter and connect the hard drive directly to one of the ports on my 13" MacBook Pro (non touch bar) then the drive stays connected just fine and works well. As soon as I plug it back into this Apple Multiport Adapter then it begins acting flakey again. I'm very disappointed in this product, as the $8 USB-A to USB-C I bought on Amazon is doing a better job.

    Issues on 2016 15" rMBP w/TB

Like so many others, I am experience issues when trying to use this as a dock for my 2016 15" rMBP w/TB. When the laptop is closed it flakes out when the external display goes to sleep or when unplugging the adapter.

Doesn't work with Wacom Cintiq and Macbook Pro 2016

Let me add to the list that HDMI is buggy with this and my external monitor.

When coming out of sleep mode, you will need to disconnect the adapter, open up the Macbook Pro, log back in, and then plug the adapter back in.

In this case, the Wacom Cintiq 27QHD. Word has it that using a display port adapter is a better alternative. Stay away from HDMI if you can.

doesn't work for macbook pro 13" (late 2016) after 10.12.2

The usb-c to hdmi use to work on any official/non-official apple product pre 10.12.2 after the upgrade my 27" dell monitor S2715H can't be detected, I've bought another 1 coz I thought my cheap adapter was broken I have the same issue. Then I bought this official apple adapter also with the same issue I've just found out today that the hardware was not the fault but the 10.12.2 itself... I've reseted/formatted my mac with no success fixing this issue.

Works for me with Touchbar MBP 15"

I think I read directions which said to connect the power cable and HDMI cable before attaching the adapter to the MBP and then turn on the MBP.
The directions may have appeared while updating the software as there are no directions on the paper that came in the box.

I have a very good HDMI cable which was left over from a cable company installation.
    My monitor is a Samsung 27" TV/monitor, T27B350.
Everything works together without any problems.

    It's a Necessity

Do NOT buy a third party adapter that claims it does this. They're extremely unreliable, I've tried lots of the Amazon one (Sitachei, etc.); even Monoprice's wasn't that great and is always out of stock.

It's good they lowered the price to $49, that's much more practical for this as it is a necessity. It's definitely an expensive thing but you'll be much more satisfied with it. As much as people hate dongles, I find it actually quite nice. Rather than having to plug in 3 things into my old MacBook Pro (Display, Power, Audio, USB Hub) I only plug in this one dongle and it instantly works.

HDMI drive my monitor, USB either has my external hard drive (thats partitioned to 50% Time Capsule, 50% Storage) or a Logitech Unifying Receiver, and lastly Power. It's extremely nice to only have to plug in one thing to get power, display, storage or mice/keyboard.

As always with Apple Product the build quality is great and it feel durable. I am a little worried about the dongle hanging off the side of my table and it potentially fraying like MagSafe or Lightning Cables, but the insulation seems much thicker on their USB-C line of accessories.

Causes laptop to restart / reboot

Using this adapter to connect a MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2015) with an HP Pavilion 24xw monitor. Firmware is up to date and running the current operating system (10.11.6). If left with the dongle plugged in and the monitor attached via the HDMI cable it will cause the laptop to restart very 6-12 hours if left in sleep mode. Of course, all applications and windows crash. It was like this fresh out of the box, even within the first 24 hours of use.

I bought this for my wife and I am very disappointed with the results. Call me crazy but I somehow have this expectation that technology will work. Of course things fail, but this failed fresh out of the box. Now add on the fact that it was a cool $50 for an ADAPTER, now I really expect it to work.

I've owned both Apple systems for years. My first home computer when I was a boy was an Apple ][gs (consequently I still sometimes will name a keystroke as "open-apple Q" or the like). In grad school I had a 2000 iMac I was still using as an iTunes server in 2008. In 2006 I bought a first-generation MacBook Pro that I was still using in 2014 when something finally fried, and today I'm still using an Early 2008 iMac that is now just about 9 years old. I love that so many of my Apple products stood the test of time and for the most part worked flawlessly.

How disappointing that the hardware just isn't as stable as it used to be.

Intermittent video problem solved by removing lint

I think I finally solved the problem with intermittent video (on MacBook 12" Early 2016) after 3 months of frustration. Since I could not edit my original review, I am posting a revised review from another AppleID. I cleaned the connectors (USB-C port on the computer, USB-C plug on the adapter, HDMI cable side and port, etc) by scraping the holes with a cable tie and then vacuuming all these holes to remove any possible remaining dust or lint. I also reset the PRAM just in case (reboot by holding cmd-P-R until 2nd chime). Now, the intermittent video problem seems to be gone! So, I am revising my review from 2 stars to 5 stars. This is an indispensable adapter for me.

Suggestion to Apple: the OS probably should also detect this intermittent video issue and suggest cleaning. I did not think lint could have been an issue because both the MacBook and the adapter were brand new out of the box when the problem started. My only slight complaint is that it is a relatively big adapter. It would be nice if it was smaller. For this size, I would want a second USB port.

So I bought SSD drive and wouldn't work, wonder why.

"The Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter is not compatible with the G-Tech G-DRIVE mobile USB 3.0 Hard Drive."
It says in the description. Found after my G-Tech SSD drive keep disconnecting. But other external drives are also very finicky connected to the usb3.0. I use hub and multiple usb devices are connected. (mouse, keyboard, ethernet, 2 drives) It seems to give " disk is not disconnected properly" sign every time I connected to the hub. Hope my drives are okay. I think I am gonna give up on everything USB-C. HDMI works fine for me though.

Works perfectly with 15" Touch Bar MacBook Pro and 4K TV.

Running macOS Sierra 10.12.2. Pugged in adapter, and Mac prompted me to download update 1.0 for the AV adapter. After the update, the adapter works flawlessly to both charge the MacBook and drive a 4K TV full resolution at 60Hz.
