apple lover says DONT TOUCH IT

I bought a mac book. It is wonderful and my favorite mac so far. But this adapter is awful - disconnects at random, I cannot eject a disk, it fails to let my macbook backup. I could not say how I tried to resolve it - refused to publish.

HDMI does not work with late-2016 MacBook Pro

Brand new MacBook 2016 Pro with this adapter and HDMI>DVI-D cable does not work. MacBook will not detect the external display. Expensive piece of junk.

Battery drains even when plugged in

When using power intensive applications, a power cord plugged into this adapter will be bottlenecked or something. Battery will slowly drain over time rather than staying fully charged. The video functionality works great and is more reliable than knockoff brands, but having to use up a separate USB port for power when this adapter is supposed to be able to do it is very frustrating!

    HDMI connection does not work

I have an intermittent issue where an external display will go dark for a second or two at a time, a couple of times a minute. Sometimes this effect is persistent and sticks around; usually it resolves itself after a few minutes until the next time the computer wakes from sleep, or the next time I connect a monitor.

From the looks of these reviews, I'm not the only one with this issue. I have a 12" Macbook, but I've heard reports of "Touch Bar MBP" owners seeing the same problem.

Apple says that if you buy a USB-C-only Mac, you'll be able to use this adapter to connect an external display. This claim factored into my decision to purchase a 12" Macbook, but the implementation is clearly flawed to the point where it is IMO not ready for market. As of now, I cannot rely on being able to connect a display to my laptop. That's totally unacceptable.

This seems to have been a known issue for a while, so it is really not a good sign that Apple hasn't either a) silently fixed it with a software update or b) issued a statement. If you already have a USB-C-only Mac, you may have no better option than to buy this adapter as a companion and hope that it works well *enough*. If you don't already own such a Mac, then maybe you should hold off on purchasing one until Apple fixes this horrible flaw.

    Avoid This Product

Despite installing an update as soon as I plugged the adapter in, it is still not working properly. Terrible flickering. Do not buy. I'm using a late 2016 15" Macbook Pro and a 34" Samsung monitor.

    Expensive and unreliable

My adapter arrived with the USB port not working. I tried the product because usually apple products are expensive but normally work well. It seems this adapter is the exception.

    Works as expected

Just bought this today from the Apple store during the USB-C promotion. Using it on my 2016 Macbook 12", I have no problem connecting to my FHD monitor using a regular HDMI cable. No flicking, no sudden disconnection, no problem waking up from sleep, no problem with hot plugging or unplugging. Have not tried 4K.

USB seems to be have 3.0 speed. Connected my Seagate 1TB portable drive and got 100MB/s read and write speed as expected from a spinning hard drive. Definitely not a USB 2.0 as stated by a couple of reviewers. System report shows the external drive connected to a USB 3.0 bus with up to 5Gb/s speed and providing 900mA of current to the port.

The adapter is slightly warm to touch after running for an hour. Not a concern at all.

My adapter is running firmware version 2.35.

    DO NOT BUY THIS

I tried to use this for my late 2016 Macbook Pro to drive an external Dell U2913WM monitor, thinking it would be a great solution for power, display and the USB bus. The first thing macOS Sierra asks you to do when connecting is install a new driver. Out of our 3 computers, only 1 was able to successfully install the driver. My display flickered constantly at times, and when it did work there was significant underscan. Either the MBP thought it was a TV, or couldn't handle the widescreen display, but this is a horrible product and no one at Apple yet really knows. A j5create USB-C to DisplayPort cable worked perfectly, as did ANY OTHER third-party adapter for USB-C to HDMI. Just don't use this one.

Great adapter, but you NEED a good cable!

After buying a MacBook Pro with only USB-C ports, it was time to connect it to my Dell 4K monitor. I was so alarmed by the low ratings on this device that I first bought a different brand... which did not work at all. Despite the preponderance of negative reviews, I decided there is no way Apple would sell a product with so many problems, so there must be something else going on, and after some consideration I went ahead and bought this one.

At first, I was dismayed to find I was suffering the same flickering issue so many other users have reported. However, it turns out that the problem was not the adapter, but the cheap cable I was using. Another cable I tried didn't work at all. However, a $20 cable from Wal-Mart (the 4 foot GE Pro HDMI cable) solved the problem, and now I'm having excellent results.

HDMI is a demanding protocol, and your entire setup needs high-quality components. Your cables should be as short as possible to minimize the chance of problems. If you're having difficulties with this adapter, chances are you need a new cable as well.

The only reason I'm giving it four stars is that I'd prefer to have an integrated adapter + cable that was devoted to just plugging in HDMI monitors to USB-C ports, without requiring such a bulky dongle. That would simplify my setup considerably. But in the absence of such a thing, this seems to be the second-best alternative.

    USB Drives problem + solution

The USB port on these adapter DOES NOT WORK WITH MOST EXTERNAL DRIVES. The connection will not sustain speed higher then 30MB/s and the connection will drop out constantly.

The solution is to plug in your drive directly to one of the USB-C port on your MBP via a single cable. For example if you have a WD drive, most likely it has a USB Micro-B connector, so a Belkin USB-C to Micro-B cable is what you need and they are available from the Apple Store. This will solve the problems people are having with drives not functioning through adapters/dongles.

The USB port on the adapter is best used for keyboard, mouse etc. NOT for data transfer at high speed.

Works Well - Now I have a multi-screen MacBook Pro

I bought this for my new 15 inch MacBook Pro late 2016 with Touch Bar. I had two problems, both of which were not the adapter. The first problem was due to the connector not being fully inserted into the MacBook.Having not used USB C before I was not familiar. Turns out the connector must be fully inserted until the casing is flush with the case of the MacBook Pro. My second issue was the HDMI cable I used was the thickness of a spaghetti string and was purchased at a dollar store and surprise it did not work. When I attached a more traditional HTMI cable everything worked perfectly.

When I first inserted fully the adaptor USB C connector in my MacBook I received a message that the adaptor was detected and firmware needed to be updated. After the update I rebooted and it has worked perfectly. As a bonus I get an extra USB C port and a USB 2, which will work with many accessories the only exception being high speed drives.I never figured out whether it was the firmware in my MacBook Pro or in the adaptor that was getting updated, but whichever, all was good.

Kinda works but it's really buggy. Poor experience.

I'm disappointed in the quality of this product, especially since Apple is forcing us to use USB-C everything. The adapter will often cause a kernel panic with my new MacBookPro 13". It told me there was an update as soon as I plugged it in - but it immediately crashed. I was able to reboot and then tried a few more times and was finally able to get the update to install. However when I put my Mac to sleep my external monitor blinks between sleeping and then waking up and falling asleep quickly again repeatedly over and over forever. So I just have to remember to unplug it when I walk away from my PC since it doesn't put the external monitor to sleep properly. It's really annoying and a poor quality experience overall.

    Does not work as intended

I am looking to connect an LG UltraFine 4K display to a late 2013 Retina Macbook. While at the Apple Store, I was told this adapter would allow me to connect an HDMI cable from the MacBook to the USB-C port on the 4K Display. The connection does not work as intended. The MacBook does not recognize the display at all. I called Apple Support to resolve the issue and they were unable to help me.

Problems connecting to printer and monitor (usb & hdmi)

I bought this when it was >A$100, I'm glad to see it's now cheaper.
That said, I'm disappointed that when I have my macbook set up in the office and linked to printer via usb and monitor via HDMI i often have to go through a process of unplugging, re-plugging and restarting everything to get the monitor or printer working. Today I can't even get the monitor working which is incredibly frustrating.

monitor doesn't work, adapter version reverted after installed

My Dell U2410 monitor via HDMI doesn't work with the USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter. It prompted a version update first time plugged in. After 4th attempt verified that the version successfully changed to 2.33. Then the monitor worked. Now today, it's reverted to an older version (1.58)! Monitor no longer works. Terrible product.

    Absolute Garbage.

So frustrated. Brand new computer brand new adapter constant flashing. I've tried on 3 different 2016 Macbooks and 10+ monitors/projectors/tv all have the same issue. How the heck is Apple still selling this thing???? The third party adapters seem to have the same issue, beginning to think the problem is with the laptop design.
