    Too expensive poor design

I was so excited when I purchased my keyboard only 3 weeks ago, that excitement lasted only a week and it has become such a pain that today I decided that I am done with it and just purchased a regular Smart Cover. I wish I could return the keyboard was such a big investment and instead of making my iPad better it really made it impossible to work with.
The magnets are not strong enough to keep the keyboard in place , it keeps coming off and when travelling with it, it flaps open inside the backpack and the iPad battery drains. The idea is good but the design is poor. I came to the point of preferring typing straight into The iPad screen instead of carrying it around.
Sometimes the connection fails and the iPad and keyboard stop communicating properly, the only way to fix this was detaching the keyboard and attach it again.
The issue about how it keeps unattached came to a point where I had to use an elastic to create a good permanent closure before putting it inside my bag.
Usually love apple products, but this one is a fail.... And such a big investment!! Don't buy it not worth it at all.

    Enhances the iPad Pro experience

I'll admit it, I was very sceptical at first. Why on earth would I need a physical keyboard on my iPad Pro? At the time I purchased my new iPad Pro, I had a play with the Smart Keyboard at the Apple Store. Sure, it was easier to type, but it felt strange not having a trackpad below the keyboard like on my MacBook Pro, and $269 is a high price to pay for an accessory. I ended up purchasing a Smart Cover instead.

Well, after a couple of weeks of using my new iPad I had become frustrated at my constant mistyping using the on screen keyboard, so I decided to take the splash and buy the Smart Keyboard. I really wish I'd done this from the start! A few points for those of you considering the Smart Keyboard:

    - Keyboard shortcuts are GREAT. Being able to quickly switch between apps, cut/copy and paste, etc. using the keyboard is fantastic.
    - It's really nice to type on, more so when you try it at home on a coffee table or your lap instead of the high tables at the Apple Store.
    - It looks great (paired with a white/gold iPad Pro).
    - You save screen real estate as the on-screen keyboard is no longer visible. This makes a huge difference if you're using any app that involves a fair bit of typing. For example Google hangouts now takes up the full screen rather than just the top half, so it makes the iPad Pro screen seem a lot bigger.
    - It transforms the iPad Pro experience. I'm considering selling my 15.4" MacBook Pro and replacing it with a retina iMac and then just relying on the iPad whenever I need something portable. It can't do everything a laptop can do (yet) but with the Smart Keyboard (and Apple Pencil) the iPad Pro becomes a compelling and useful enough device to make me question the mix of devices I use day to day.

I've given the Smart Keyboard four stars. Why not five? The price. I would feel a lot better about buying one if they were about $80 cheaper.

Minimalist, svelte design that reveals an obsession with details

I've been thoroughly impressed with Apple's Smart Keyboard. It features a minimalist, svelte design that reveals an obsession with details. The unique, conductive fabric that Apple has created is very innovative and allows for two-way exchange of both power and data. And the laser ablated custom-woven fabric, of the keyboard, has a great feel to it; it is also water and stain resistant.

The proximity of the screen and keyboard in "type" mode allows you to transition from typing to touching the screen seamlessly. In this way, using iPad Pro with the Smart Keyboard feels very intuitive. When looking at cost, this keyboard provides value far beyond its price. If you're looking for an extraordinarily functional keyboard that also features unparalleled, first in class design, this is the keyboard for you.

    Like it, but....

My only gripe with the keyboard is the fact that I have to put a wedge under it (towel, iPhone ha ha, etc) in order for it to lay flat when I'm typing on a flat surface..the iPad is top heavy and lifts the keyboard ever so slightly, I'm probably OCD but I like things to work well without modification. Other than this little and very easily solvable glitch, I like the keyboard. Price is a little steep because I just had to have the pencil also but I'm happy so far. Hope mine doesn't just quit working as was reported in an earlier post.

    Way over priced!!

I really love the iPad Pro and all Apple products but I must say I am brutally disappointed with Apples design of the "Smart" Keyboard and that they really think it's just the best there is. First thing that struck me is its not even a full case and falls off constantly, and because of the way it connects it makes it virtually incompatible with any available case I've seen, I had to jimmy rig one to be used with this keyboard. Second, NO MEDIA BAR?? (Volume, brightness, play/pause, ect) Like seriously Apple? Third, I find it extremely annoying that the CAPS lock key has absolutely no indicator light and nothing that appears on screen to let know know CAPS is on. Finally, this isn't as important but I am also disappointed that Apple didn't make it backlit or offer a backlit model as they are so well known for this in their keyboards. In conclusion I would say that due to these concerns and missing features this keyboard is not even remotely close to being worth $170. If you are looking for these features I strongly recommend the logi keyboard. It is a full case, backlit and has the media bar that goes above my expectations with its capabilities. The only thing it lacks as well is the CAPS indicator but for everything else it's worth it. Best part... It's actually cheaper but I would have gladly even paid more for it.

Great Official 1st Gen Apple iPad Keyboard

    IPad Pro keyboard cover notes

The high price aside, I do enjoy this keyboard a lot which doubles as an ideal stand for the iPad Pro and prevents your screen from getting scratched. Since it is apple's first official iPad keyboard the following make this a 4 start product instead of 5 stars.

    1) No backlight illumination.
    2) No Home Button or shortcuts mentioned in the instructions , you have to press Command + H for home screen, Command + Tab to switch apps etc.
    3) Not leather
    4) High Price
    5) iOS needs some better keyboard optimization, I.E. Scrolling on web pages is sluggish
    6) no Apple Pencil storage
    7) needs a third position for incline viewing, drawing and touch typing when placed flat on a table
    8) Additional Colour options

Other than that, this keyboard is thin and light and easy to type on. I prefer it over other chiclet keyboards found on some laptops like the MacBook Air.

Since the iPad Pro doesn't have a built in stand this is ideal compared to a Smart Cover and perfect for hammering out emails and freeing up screen space.

If you can spare the extra cash for this keyboard cover, it is light, versatile and adds to the iPad Pro experience in several ways. It doesn't need to be charged, require Bluetooth and is pleasant to type on once you get the hang of it you either will love it or hate it.

    Great Keyboard!!!!!

This keyboard takes about 30 minutes to get used to. After that it's great! I enjoy it more on this than my MacBook Air keyboard. Great thing about this keyboard is I can detach it whenever I want, and it is very slim and great cover when I'm not using it. Yes it's not backlit, but I'll take the thinness and the material of the keys, any day of the week. I still think it's pricy, (I got mine open box from bestbuy) but it's the he best keyboard for the iPad.

    Much better than expected...

The cost hurt a lot, but that aside I tried two other cases and this is the best (with the back cover). Quality is excellent. To address the the lack of a place for the pen (which is why it loses a start) I found a stick on pen loop on Amazon. I put a slit in top of back cover (the top when holding iPad sideways) and put pen loop through there. I than took a scripto pen clip off an old pen and added to Apple Pencil for extra security.

I find the keyboard case to be very versatile. It's on my lap now as I type this review. The keyboard is accurate. I can position my iPad depending on how I'm using it.

    Hated it, then LOVED IT.

At first the feel of the keys just didn't work for me. No click sound, not much give. Weird cloth thing. But darn it, I was going to try and make it work. And here's the thing. The initial hatred was all based on the shock of the new. This was a whole new kind of keyboard and change is difficult. Once I really started to use it I actually started to love it. The keys didn't clomp like other keys but they have a really nice feel nonetheless. Sexy even. And they give enough to know you're actually pressing them. And I actually don't have to press them with the force of other keyboards, so now I'm typing less aggressively and that's not a bad thing. Here's the bottom line: Anything new takes some getting used to but once you get used to it you wonder why other keyboards aren't this sexy. Patience is key. Love this keyboard. Love how ingenious it is. It's really an engineering marvel.

    Great for Everything!

It is so convenient, no batteries, Bluetooth, cables, nothing! It's really comfy and easy to use. Very pleased with this keyboard and that it acts as a cover and a stand when not in use, Apple scored with this product.

This keyboard made my IPad really Pro

Great keyboard, very comfortable while typing, very stable at any angle while typing on my lap, adding only a small bulk to the iPad, great product I highly recommend to buy this keyboard.

Nice and Easy So Far !!

I purchased the Apple Smart Keyboard for my 12.9 inch iPad Pro yesterday. So far I have found it easy to use. It's to my liking.
Typing on the keyboard is a breeze and found it comfortable......and that is typing on my lap in a recliner!!
I noticed that there is an UPDATE already for the keyboard and I haven't updated it yet, because of all the "hubbub" I hear. Does anyone know if there is still a problem with that UPDATE??

It IS a bit pricey for not including a cover for the back of the iPad Pro and it should have included a "backlight."

Like I said, So far so good, and I'll keep it.

    Ruined IPad experience

Moral of my review is that I can't wait for this thing to break so I have an excuse to buy another type (for a lot less $$). Good thing is that with its structure, it's liable to fall off and break at any time.

Stand is so weak I have to put pillows behind the IPad to keep it propped up if I want to watch Netflix or a movie on here.

Doesn't hold remotely to the IPad so you have to be more careful than you would if you were carrying a baby.

Magnetism is weak and the stand is flimsy.

Doesn't fit nicely if you want your screen covered as it shifts around so much.

Better spend another $100 on AppleCare Protection because you will be dropping your iPad.

Only good thing is that you don't have to connect to Bluetooth, which is not very hard.

    This keyboard rocks!

I almost did not buy this because of mixed reviews. So glad I did not listen to the negative ones. It is light, easy to use, really ingenious how it connects, and worth every nickel-basically turning an iPad into a laptop. Game changer for me, as a busy lawyer traveling and not wanting to carry multiple devices. Easy to type, modify docs and otherwise work productively on the road.

I think this keyboard is great

I bought this keyboard just a couple of days ago. As a keyboard, this thing is great. At first, I thought the feel of it was a bit different as it didn't really feel like a keyboard. I like the fact that they keys are able to accommodate my big hands. I don't spend a lot of time correcting my own typos because I have enough space to actually type. I have another case that I put the entire iPad and keyboard case in to protect everything. I don't have any complaints. I love it, and really love the fact that there are no cords. Just connect and go. It's awesome.

An Excellent Companion to the iPad Pro

This keyboard is very compact, has a great key "feel" and makes the iPad Pro much more useful. I've read complaints about the Smart Keyboard not having backlighting. That would be nice and looks great, but I haven't missed it for any practical reasons. The only reason I would downgrade the Smart Keyboard is because it does not cover the back of the iPad Pro. Apple sells a separate silicone back cover for a shocking $80. A back cover should be incorporated into this product, especially at its price.

There's a lot of great technology in the Smart Keyboard for iPad Pro. It's a credit to Apple's design team that they got "big key" feel from a nearly flat keyboard. Considering that it is so portable, performs well and doesn't require any syncing or external batteries, this is the keyboard to buy for your iPad Pro.

    Elegantly Simple

I've been using a Brydge keyboard with my iPad Air II for a couple years which was most useful as a platform for holding my tablet at the proper angle in my lap for reading, correspondence, and watching streaming sports; though it always felt heavier than necessary. My partner has been enjoying an iPad Pro since last October and wanted me to have one but the other keyboards on the market added more bulk and weight than was satisfactory to me. The smart keyboard alone didn't sit well on my lap so I resisted until, after a simple web search, I found a memory foam lap-desk that is both compact and lightweight. Now I have the Pro with the smart keyboard which, even with the lap board, weigh less than my older Air II with the other keyboard. The Smart Keyboard is elegantly simple, supremely comfortable and luxuriously touchable. More importantly, it is exactly what I've wanted since my very first tablet and Apple delivered!

    I love it!

I'm not sure why everyone gives the keyboard a negative review. I love mine!!!! The keyboard is very responsive and smooth. I bought a back cover from another vendor that has an Apple Pencil holder on the back and I'm home free!!! I just wish they would make more colors!!!

    Apple - Seriously?

£139 for a keyboard you may only use occasionally. It only offers protection for the iPad screen leaving the back exposed to the elements. If you want the back protected, you'll need to part with an additional £65 for a silicon 'case' that only offers back protection. So, as it stands, £204 for a complete case to protect your iPad with the additional benefit of a keyboard. Remember, this is a device that essentially runs a mobile operating system, it is not a laptop. Rip off.

    Limited functionality

I've been using the smart keyboard for a few days now and it's really hopeless. Poor as a cover and not much use as a keyboard, it's unwieldy, and many of the symbols I use (£ for example) are missing. Having produced so many iconic designs over the years, Apple should have made more effort. The iPad Pro is lovely, but the keyboard is an expensive let down.
