Works but basic functionality. JPEG only

    • Written by Paul B from Southampton

I have just bought a new iPad Mini 5th Gen running iOS 12.2. I want to transfer photos from my Panasonic GX9, which I can do wirelessly but the idea of this gadget is to make that a quicker and simpler process.
The camera can take JPEGs at 5, 10 or 20 MP. I can put the SD card in the reader and Photos opens on the iPad and it will transfer all or some of the pictures. So the basic process works. However, as people have already remarked, there is only a thumbnail size preview available, which is pretty poor. There is NO other information whatsoever in Photos, before or after import, not even basic info such as file name, date and time, resolution. That is REALLY poor!
The camera can also record in RAW format - 20MP obviously. Photos does import these but RESIZES them to a useless 1920*1440 !! This is bizarre!! If I take a photo in RAW + JPEG, Photos ignores the RAW file completely and only imports the JPEG.
Half of the questions in the Q&A ask if it can write to an SD card. It definitely can't and the Files app doesn't even see the card. So you can't use an SD card for transfer or backup. Another glaring omission. Oddly, it lets you delete from the card, which you wouldn't want to do so that's a useless function.
    In summary:
it does what it says, but only for JPEG and it's more difficult than it should be.
It's no use for RAW (maybe that's just Panasonic, but I wouldn't bet on that).
It could be much more useful than it is. I would expect better for the money.

    Bought yesterday It doesn’t work...

    • Written by Sandro S from Roma

...both on iOS 12.1.1 on iPad mini 2 16 Gbytes and 12.1.2 on iPhone SE 32 Gbytes .
Firmware version is 1.0.2 while hardware version is 1.0.0.
Hope to give a better rate in close future. Now I’m disappointed.
Any suggestion? Thanks for a prompt reply and a fix.

should be more easy to transfer

    • Written by Adam K from Westlock

This device gets bad reviews due to poor description of accessory. Please should explain the abilities of accessories better for their customers.

This device can only read one way, read sd card onto the apple device, for easy import or viewing of pictures.

The real issue with this device is that, it can only read pictures that are placed in DCIM folder, otherwise you see nothing on screen.

You could try to make up a folder with DCIM labeled name, but may not work.

This device likes to see, DCIM folder made by digital camera, trail camera, or some device that will automatically create the folder for you on the sd card, while saving the pictures that are captured from that device into the folder.

So tricking it by naming the folder DCIM may not resolve the issue.

Therefore, this device is only good to retrieve photos from digital camera or trail cam for ease of access in remote situations where you have no computer available, otherwise use a computer to read the sd card files or use your apple cable to read files from computer, etc.

If this is a privacy or security issue, Apple stop being so protective.

Works well for photo - not for anything else

    • Written by Harvey A from Grantham

I bought this product so I could import all my photos onto my iPad, edit them, and put them back on the card. I also wanted to be able to use this for video, and this did not work. I also wanted to use this for documentation transfers, as I thought the SD card would show up in "files", but it doesn't

    So disappointed

    • Written by Amaya H from Laurel

So I bought this as because I am a traveler and I like to vlog. I take pictures and videos of the many places I go and this worked for the first few times I used it. All of the sudden it would load an image all the way until I saw a green check them say "This accessory is not supported by this iPhone/iPad". How so apple? I am using an apple product to an apple device. this is very upsetting.

    Very limited functionality

    • Written by Theodore J from Athens

I use it to transfer photos (JPGs) from a Nikon DSLR to an iPhone, and that's all it can do for me. I would like to pull in RAW (NEF) files for manipulating on the iPhone, but this reader will not allow me to see them. Oh, well - just one more way that Apple infantilizes us.

    Possible Work Around

    • Written by Joshua K from Ames

I have an iphone 5c running IOS 10.3.3. I had the same problems as a few other people. The first time I plugged in the card reader it worked correctly and every time after it tells me the device is not supported. BUT I found that if I follow these steps it works:

Make sure the card reader has been unplugged for at least 30 seconds

    1) Open the photo app (the one that comes preloaded on the iphone)
    2) Insert the SD card into the card reader
    3) Plug in the card reader with the SD card already inserted

When I do this the card reader seems to work correctly, I can upload photos and delete them from the card.
Hopefully at least a couple other people have the same luck as me.

Works fine on iOS 10 but stopped with iOS 11 beta2

    • Written by Carleo C from Cuyahoga Falls

The SD adapter isn’t working at all on my iPad Pro 10.5 running iOS 11 public beta 2. It works as advertised on iOS 10 on my iPad Air 2 and iPhone 7 Plus. I haven’t run into any issues thus far with SD card compatibility. I’ve tested Lexar and Sandisk.

Works great - in one direction only

    • Written by Seth S from Seattle

Have to be very clear on what this adapter is for, transferring files from your SD card to the iPhone or iPad, not the other way around. Lets say you want to transfer from your phone to the SD card, not going to happen on this adapter. Otherwise works as expected.

    Won't work with update 10.0.2

    • Written by Jessica S from Watertown

I've had this adapter for a few months now and I love it because I can import pictures and order them from walmart. I never like to do the updates because something always happens, and this time was no different. The pictures won't show up. I plug it in with my card from my camera and nothing comes up. I hope it's just a quick fix with another update soon, because this is the only way I can order pictures, as I don't have a laptop.

Dash Cam SD card files not seen

    • Written by Robert B from Edmonds

I'd hoped to import video files from my dash cam SD card. The files are within a folder within a second folder. Photos pops up but nothing shows up. I followed others advice and moved a test file to a DCIM folder I'd created. Photos still insists there is nothing to import. This seems very un-Apple like that it cannot find these files. What is so hard about recognizing files and importing them, even if they are not recognizable image or video files?
