Not designed well...at least for the 9.7 inch iPad Pro

As a keyboard, the iPad is too heavy and causes the the keypad to tilt up, which is horrible for typing. As a cover, it can be tough to hold because of the way the keypad sits on the iPad.

    Doesn't work

I was excited to use my new ipad, and after a couple of months, i noticed some freying around the keyboard. I have never dropped my ipad, and now the thing half the time says this accessory isn't supported, and sometimes it won't even pop up

    Exceeded my expectations.

I recently wanted to get an iPad Pro for school to replace my Air 2 and help with all the PowerPoint presentations I edit for my college classes. I originally just bought the Pro and Apple Pencil, thinking I could just use the Smart Cover for my Air 2 as a stand for the Pro and my Logitech Keys-to-Go keyboard like before. Thankfully, the old Smart Cover wasn't compatible with my new Pro so I got the Smart Keyboard instead. It took some getting used to the different ways you can fold it and the way the keyboard felt compared to others that I was used to, but once you do it adds such great utility and convenience to the Pro. The keys feel pretty nice and I love the sound they make when you type away on them. I like how you can easily switch from type mode to flat when you need to start writing/drawing with the Pencil. And it even has the 2 positions from the Smart Cover (The "Watch" position is much more vertical than the Smart Cover version; I'm guessing to differentiate itself from the "Type" position).

I didn't expect to like this product that much but it has been a pleasant surprise for me. Highly recommended.

    Terrible value. Poor design.

My rating: 1.5 out of 5

I only would recommend this keyboard if:
-you want to have an accessory that uses the Smart Connector,
-you just want to type in environments that have great lighting,
-are concerned with having only one side of the device protected,
-having only 3 viewing angles is acceptable, and
-are looking for a product that was made by Apple.

    Here's why:
Sure, it allows you to type. But it's not backlit. That's right. This expensive keyboard for a "pro" device was not designed to be used in all lighting conditions where you may need to see the keys (like dark classrooms, lecture halls or other places life has less than bright environments). Why would you pay over $100 for a keyboard that doesn't have backlighting?

It can only protect one side of the device. It's not designed to cover both sides. Even though Apple's website mentions it will fold into a cover, it's important to keep in mind that the other side will be exposed.

Typing on this Smart Keyboard was pleasant for me. But, others did not like the feel of the keys. I do like that this keyboard has a coating that makes it stain, water and crumb resistant.

I like to watch content on my iPad Pro and this folds into an angle for that. My experience with that angle was not good. The way it folded for watching the screen made it so that the device would topple forward if I swiped or tapped too hard.

It is also really important to keep in mind that it easily detaches from the iPad Pro. I wanted to love this accessory. But it just wasn't for me.

    Great Product I Use Daily

I bought the Smart Keyboard for my 9.7-inch iPad Pro almost a year ago after using the Keys-To-Go with my previous iPad. I LOVE this keyboard and the fact I don't have to charge anything makes my decision a better one. The keys feel natural right out of the box and feel even better now that I've been using them for almost a year. A concern for me was if I would lose typing speed, however that is not an issue at all. This is my go to device if I'm in a tight workspace or in a classroom setting where my MacBook Pro would be a bit too big. I'm at a loss at all the negative reviews of this keyboard; mine has not torn/ripped, there is no problem connecting to my iPad (since the magnets do all the work for you...in 3 seconds), and the keys haven't malfunctioned at all. I highly recommend this keyboard to anyone getting an iPad Pro!

    The 2nd replacement

I bought this product last August. I asked for the first replacement at October because of the ripped fabric. Now I'm gonna get the 2nd replacement since the keyboard didn't work. What a great product.

I cant believe I am saying this about an apple product, but this is rubbish.
    The keyboard doesn't lie flat
The keys make typing very difficult
The whole thing feels very unstable.
The Logitech Create is a far superior product - yes it might be heavier but it is well worth the extra few grams.
I probably wouldn't have even bothered leaving a negative review, but for the fact that Apple don't really want it back.
It was a gift - but apparently I have to get the person who purchased the gift to call them - have you ever heard of anything so stupid.
It is not even as though they will give anyone a refund - just vouchers!

Turned out to be a great purchase. Highly Recommend!

Before buying this product I read through the reviews to see what people had to say about this keyboard. Turns out many seem to have a problem where their keyboard is floating off the table. As I am loyal to Apple and wanted to get this keyboard for a while now, I proceeded with the purchase. When I first attached the keyboard, I too witnessed the "floating" of the keyboard. After a few minutes of use, it seems to have straighten out and now lies perfectly flat on whatever surface I use. I guess after a using it for a while its lossens up and lays flat on the table as it's supposed to.

Highly Recommend this product to anyone looking a quality keyboard. While the price can be a little steep, you pay for quality and Apple never fails in that respect.

    LOVE it

Since I lug around a heavy Windows laptop as provided by work, my iPad has become my primary consumption device while at home. But I found myself often going back to my laptop when I wanted to write an email, reducing some of the utility I wanted to get out of my tablet. That said, the price of the Smart Keyboard—and concern over whether I was going to defeat the purpose of the iPad form factor—kept me on the fence for a while.

It has far exceeded my expectations. Here are the pros:

    * I love the feel of the keys, and in an online typing test, my words per minute were only reduced from about 125 to 105, which is more than acceptable for the purposes I use my iPad for.

    * The case is lightweight for all you're getting and a great combination with the Smart Cover form factor I already loved.

    * The viewing angle is great, and I find that the 9.7-inch keyboard balances on my lap just fine. (For particularly long typing sessions, you'll want a flatter surface.)

    * The keyboard shortcuts are great.

    * And I couldn't imagine a keyboard that doesn't use something like the smart connector for all-in-one power.

Absolutely love it and recommend it if you're looking to increase your iPad's utility closer to the reading/writing you can do on a laptop.

    iPad Pro Keyboard case

This was worth saving up for. Exceeds my expectations, perfectly compact and light for a lady. Strong enough for a man. Give it 10 out of 10 as I have had other key board cases and they are heavy and clumsy. Never written any reviews for my apple trio, but this was a must.....you must have it with an iPad Pro. Fits all my needs.

    Keyboard does not sit flat

Not sure why I even bother posting here as no-one from apple ever comments. Anyway, keyboard floats above the table and flaps when typing. Really poor design. Would not have happened with Steve Jobs at the helm!

    Not worth the price

The main reason I purchased an Apple keyboard was hoping I can use all of the apple shortcuts as my keyboard for my iMac, that is not true there's only about 10 shortcuts that can be used.

The shortcut I use the most on my iMac is the double command key for dictation you cannot do this with this keyboard.

Also there is no backlight, and you have to purchase a separate case to protect the back of the iPad.

Therefore there is no advantage to purchasing this keyboard.

Very disappointed in this Apple product.

This keyboard works great, but only sometimes. Unfortunately I have been having the dreaded issue that others have been experiencing. The keyboard will every few days decide it no longer wants to work. The only way to fix it is to remove it and reboot the iPad. Sometimes you have to do this more than once. Being intermittent I haven't been able to demo the issue in the Apple Store and no one on the web has found a fix. I would avoid unti then.

    Piece of junk

The letters wear off and the keys turn white. This is the second one I have had. They replaced the first one for me and now It's doing the same thing again. I have 2 other old Apple keyboards and they don't do that. This was so expensive and nothing but a piece of flimsy garbage. I want my money back! I hate it!! I can't believe Apple made such cheap garbage.

    Yes and No...

Initially, I loved this keyboard, but not I'm not too sure. It's got plenty of positives, it's light, looks nice, and is pretty functional. My problem is with the magnetism. When I bought it, the magnets were super strong but they've seem to wear off. I've had this keyboard for only about 2 months. The part on the side where the connector is and holds the iPad to the keyboard no longer stays. When I flip it over if falls off. Also, when I try to pull off the keyboard to close it, my iPad often comes off without the keyboard. There's also no place to put the apple pencil.

    Good Keyboard

I bought the Apple Keyboard, as well as a Logitech CREATE keyboard when I got my iPad Pro. I've used both for it, though I admit that I prefer the CREATE keyboard overall. But the Apple Keyboard has a great connection, it's easy to type on, and it's not as ugly as some people are making it sound. It's not too much different from the smart case I had on my old iPad (I upgraded from an "iPad with Retina Display" -- that's how old my old iPad was). My biggest problem is that I keep swinging my iPad around too much and the keyboard comes off & hits the floor (again, I am still pretty used to the smart CASE, not COVER, that I had on my old iPad -- in other words the front cover didn't come off, so this is taking some getting used to). The Apple Keyboard is a good keyboard, and it's reliable and highly portable -- all of the things I've come to love about Apple products. I don't regret buying it, and I do use it -- just not as much as my CREATE keyboard. It's worth having it.

    Brilliantly designed

I read an earlier review from David F (April 2016) who did not like the 'hump' when the Smart Keyboard is folded up during non-use as a keyboard but is still used as a cover for the iPad. I have no problem with the hump. The profile of the folded-up Smart Keyboard plus iPad is still smaller than what you will get with other brands, such as Logitech. In fact, the design of the Smart Keyboard is brilliant. With the 3-section flats, it allows the user to fold the flaps into a triangle and prop up the iPad while using the Smart Keyboard. Well done Apple!

    So far so good.

After looking at many reviews online, I decided to go ahead and buy the new Apple Smart Keyboard. So far the pros are: the keyboard itself is smaller than the bluetooth keyboard I used to have on it but on the other hand it is a lot lighter. Although the space between the keys is pretty good, the size of the keyboard is kind of small and I think I will need some time to adjust to it. The sensitivity on the keys is pretty good, it gives you the feeling of a regular keyboard. The keys on the Smart Keyboard are pretty quiet compared to the ones in the bluetooth. This Smart Keyboard is water resistant. The best feature is that it does not need to be charged since it is powered from the iPad. I can type with the keyboard on my lap although sometimes I hit other keys when I want to make it more stable.

With the Smart Keyboard I can fold the keyboard all the way behind the iPad if I am not using it. With both of the bluetooth keyboards I bought I couldn't do that. One of them didn't fold at all, the other one was a pain to make it fold and keep the keyboard in its place.

The cons so far I can say is that it is a little smaller, but I think I can get used to it. I guess since space and weight are a constraint, the Smart Keyboard does not have the buttons at the top (like most of the bluetooth keyboards) to control the music.

Overall I think it is a good investment. I use my iPad normally to take notes at work, and to write on my blog. I read some bad reviews right after I bought the iPad and that's why I didn't bought it all together, but after buying two bluetooth keyboards and noticing how heavy they made the iPad inside my purse I decided to go ahead and buy the Smart Keyboard and I can say that I am pretty happy with it so far.
